Thanks Perderedeus for the tip. I am using a ATI 4870x2, I play all games in non window mode and they run at the same resolution as my desktop of 1920x1200. I quickly searched for how to adjust the gamma on my card but didn't find anything. I know in game I can adjust gamma but it looks fine in the game, its only when I screenshot and look at the results in windows explorer it looks poor.

it may actually be windows and not your screenshots. Try viewing the screenshot in a viewing program like photoshop, painshop pro or picassa (free).Your desktop settings may actually be darker than your in game settings also.
