With the demise of my most recent guild, my friends and I are trying to find a new spot. We're in a bit of a conundrum, since there's a guild that seems like it would be a good match, but while they have an opening for a DPS Warrior, they don't need another tank. However, their tanks are chosen by ability, not by seniority, and I'm sure with my combination of skill, gear, and experience, I could easily outperform at least one of their current tanks. However, I then run into the issue of, Do I really want to kick somebody out of a position they love that they aren't doing a BAD job at, just because I would be better at it?

Now I'm not a progression minded kinda guy. I want to get to see all the content eventually, but getting there at a slower pace w/my friends is better for me. So you have to look at things and ask yourself if being in the same guild as your friend is more important than whatever level of progression this potential guild is. If my guild exploded today and I could hop into a guild doing higher end content, sure I might do it, but I'll make that decision if needed.
