Patch 3.3: Fall of the Lich King Trailer
Blizzard has finally released the official trailer for Patch 3.3: Fall of the Lich King. You can view it over on their site right now, or just enjoy it via the YouTube video embedded above. The Blizzard site is extremely slow right now, so we recommend just watching it here.
The trailer sends chills down your spine, especially if you've been paying attention to the lore of Warcraft since the RTS games back in the 90's and early 2000's. It shows a certain very important figure in Arthas' life, letting him know the Fall of the Lich King is bound to take place.
For additional information about the lore in this patch, check out our article on the Lore of Patch 3.3. To see more of the dungeons and have a bit more of the story explained to you, check out vodka's trailer.
We understand that the YouTube trailer might be taking some time to load. There's a lot of people trying to access everything at once, and most internet services are getting bogged down. WoW.com is on AOL webservers, so we should be fine, but other sites, include Blizzard's sites, are not able to handle the load as well.

This game has been ridden hard and put up wet. She either needs a major graphics upgrade and trimming of all the fat/gristle or she needs to be put down... out of her misery.

Yeah, I don't know. I was kind of impressed by the look of the video but bored by the direction the story is taking. They're basically insinuating that Arthas is up against the wall and is going to be defeated. Well, maybe not insinuating. It seems more like with a title "Fall of the Lich King" they're outright proclaiming that Arthas will lose. Where's the uncertainty in that?
I suppose it's fine that they're portraying Arthas as a tragic hero but it still fails to deliver any sense of impending danger or sense of failure to the player character. Arguably, this whole expansion has just felt like one big effort of pushing Arthas against into a corner, complete with us feeling so secure that we set up a tournament on his front lawn. Where's the sense of dread, the feeling of despair, and the feeling of being up against impossible odds that made fighting Arthas such a compelling villain in Warcraft III?
I'd much rather see something go down like in the final segments of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, or heck, even Harry Potter. In the final chapters of those series, all hope seemed lost and it was truly the protagonists' darkest hour. It made the action more intense, the trials more meaningful, and the stakes higher. This just feels like the final act of Macbeth. Sure our tragic king is experiencing some emotional depth within those walls, but the rest of us, in our massive and successful army right outside the front gates, just want to kill the mad man already.

"Let them come - Frostmourne Hungers!"
Nice to see a Warcraft 3 quote there, this also makes it seem like he is still somehow attached to the blade like he was when he was still Arthas the Death Knight.
Awesome video Blizz. WTB MORE!

@snow
Because 90% of stories out there have a climax like that?
God forbid Blizzard decides to do something a little different than every other epic story ever published!

Get it before the server crashes :P

"Also the logo looks like FAIL of the lich king."
I was thinking the same thing when I saw the title. Right now it's more like Fail of the Lich King patch as half the realms are down again. :(
Xino Dec 8th 2009 6:02PM
They really chose a bad font for that.
McRaider Dec 8th 2009 6:14PM
When hasn't the realms been dead for the first days after a major patch? It's part of the patching process!
