A lack of Alliance pride

Now, it could just be specific to this outlet -- perhaps Horde players spend more time online, or have more free time in general, and thus have the knowhow and chance to submit their pictures. But this issue has come up before (on our podcast as well): while many Horde players are ready to jump in and shout "For the Horde!" at a moment's notice, not so many Alliance players are as open about their allegiances. As Larisa asks: where's the faction pride?
I suppose I'm probably suspect number one: I've played my Horde characters for longer, so even though I've been playing Alliance toons for over a year now, I still consider myself a Hordie. And you could argue that being Alliance means you're more default and less aggressive by nature -- everyone knows Horde are the folks who pick a fight.
But certainly, even though Blizzard has done their best to engender some Alliance pride (and I'm sure they'll keep trying in the future), it just doesn't seem there. Why aren't we seeing more Alliance stepping up for their faction?

We don't need to go out there and shake our totems at people. We know we're the best.
snowleopard233 Dec 9th 2009 9:29AM
Yeah, we whooped their asses in Warcraft War I and Warcraft War II!
Alliance 2
Horde 0
Namus Dec 9th 2009 9:48AM
Actually the horde won the first war, but we won the second and the expansion! war3 was less ally vs horde and more AAAHH ZOMBIES CHEWING MY TOES!
so,
Allys 2
Hordie 1
And I agree with Nolen, we don't have a battlecry, since "for Lordaeron" is more a "For the ruins of capital city with zombies living on the basement", so I guess all we got is "For the Alliance"... *sigh.

for lordareon still works, its doing something for the kingdom that the humans once had its like saying for Jesus! technically he's dead or whatever but ya'know...eh im not a religious man...

The Horde symbol: Abstract and awesome.
The Alliance symbol: Cartoon lion.
My main is Alliance, as are many of my alts (though I do play both sides), but I don't own anything with the symbol on it, 'cause it's just... lacking in comparison to the Horde one.
Deadly. Off. Topic. Dec 9th 2009 9:28AM
Actually, yeah, I'd agree that the symbol is cartoonish especially when you compare it to the Horde. They have one that looks tribal and original (as well as creative) and we have the "mickey mouse" tattoo version of a lion. -_-
The Lordareon symbol is a hell of lot more inspiring than the Alliance cat one and I rather use that.
snowleopard233 Dec 9th 2009 9:31AM
I thought the Alliance was a lion and the Horde was an alien cyclops lion with mandibles!
Molly Dec 9th 2009 9:50AM
I've always wondered--why a lion? Do lions EXIST in Azeroth? Huh????
jrizutko Dec 9th 2009 9:56AM
^This.
Also, faction bias is trite and juvenile. Faction pride is fun an engaging. Mind the gap.
Katalliaan Dec 9th 2009 9:57AM
@ Molly - yes, go check the Barrens.

Go Voltron Force!

The Horde logo is better. It's cleaner and more distinctive. The Alliance logo has too much fine detail. I think the old Lordaeron L glyph (which of course is also used by the Scarlet Crusade) looks better than the lion's head.
The lion's head was the symbol of the human nation of Azeroth in WC2. It would probably make more sense for the Alliance logo to be something that isn't tied to one of the 5 races.

My toons are 60% Alliance but my playtime is currently 95% Alliance (my friends and family play Alliance mostly and my main is Alliance). I like both points of view, but I completely agree, the Horde symbol just rocks so much harder than the Alliance symbol. For me, the Horde symbol represents the game as a whole in a way that the too realistic/too detailed lion head never will.
If the Alliance just had a simple blue pennant with silver edges it would be far more powerful to me. A good battlefield symbol should be simplistic, evocative, not overly representative. Somehow a big "L" doesn't seem right either. Maybe a fist on a blue background representing the drawing together of the disparate elements of the Alliance like the finger of a hand to one powerful purpose.

A lion (often cartoonized) served as a symbol for England back in the 19th and early 20th century, when they were at the height of their power. The Alliance could certainly do worse.
MightyBurebista Dec 9th 2009 6:17PM
The Alliance symbol is a lion. Which appeals to me because my zodiac sign is Leo, it hearkens back to Richard the Lionheart, the lion from Narnia (which was a symbolism of Jesus by any other means), and is even the emblem of New Japan Pro Wrestling. Alliance = Strong Style! (for those who get the reference...)
The Horde symbol is...an...upside-down horseshoe. With a...thing in the middle. o_0

Besides being cartoonish, the Alliance symbol is just too damn complex - imagine it as a tatoo: all the small lines and wigglies and the colors ... It would simply never work. Alliance need to get a good graphic designer and get a new logo - something that would work fine in a small size and in a large size, in color and in monochrome, something with simple lines that anyone could replicate by hand and still very recognisable.
That is the main reason why most artists choose to use Horde logo - it is by far a better logo.
Lordaeron had a nice logo, but the logo of the Alliance is just crap.

I think the nature of the symbols also goes a little bit toward explaining the different attitudes of the factions. The Horde symbol is abstract but in effect it represents all of them. The alliance symbol however if very much associated with the human kingdoms. Just reading that you can see how something is off. I have only played a limited amount on my horde characters, but I have played all the races, and looking at their quests I get more of the feeling that the Horde is an actual alliance of races than I do with The Alliance. Only very few times did I feel like the Alliance had to rally together to fend off something or achieve a goal in the leveling process. A few instances with Draenei are the things that pop up most in my mind and the Dwarves taking in the Gnomish refugees.

You would need something to be proud of first
Destiny's hand Dec 9th 2009 9:13AM
or someone to be proud of. you'll see a rise in alliance pride come cataclysm, unless blizz says they're gonna hold off on releasing cata till this is done so it can be included in the art book for the collector's edition
DeathPaladin Dec 9th 2009 9:14AM
I'm proud that Garrosh Hellscream isn't in my faction.
Also Grand Apothecary Putress, though I don't fault the Horde too much for that since the Ebon Blade seems to be the only factions that understands the concept of operational security.
