I think the nature of the symbols also goes a little bit toward explaining the different attitudes of the factions. The Horde symbol is abstract but in effect it represents all of them. The alliance symbol however if very much associated with the human kingdoms. Just reading that you can see how something is off. I have only played a limited amount on my horde characters, but I have played all the races, and looking at their quests I get more of the feeling that the Horde is an actual alliance of races than I do with The Alliance. Only very few times did I feel like the Alliance had to rally together to fend off something or achieve a goal in the leveling process. A few instances with Draenei are the things that pop up most in my mind and the Dwarves taking in the Gnomish refugees.
