First impressions: Icecrown Citadel raid and 5-mans
Patch 3.3 has been out for two days now, and we're starting to see lots of reactions to the various new encounters pour in. Drawing from bloggers' posts, forum threads, and the reactions of a random sampling of players I've pugged with (the new LFG system is great), this is a short gloss on what I'm seeing so far:
- Forge of Souls is the easiest of the new 5-mans. The most common gripe is that group members don't pay attention to their raid warnings and move in as necessary for Bronjahm, or stop DPS on Devourer of Souls if they get Mirrored Soul.
- Pit of Saron is pretty cool, though quite sad at the end (at least if you're Horde). The trash pulls full of casters are on the tough side if people aren't good about interrupting or moving out of Hellfire on heroic. Also, don't bank on getting Don't Look Up in a pug.
- Halls of Reflection is widely cited for the intense difficulty of the first two bosses (or, more accurately, the trash waves preceding them). The heroic version is not recommended for undergeared groups, and a successful run demands a decently high level of play from all members of the group. The end is really cool.
- Lord Marrowgar is considered a utility fight; it's a gear check for the tanks and a basic competence check for everyone else. This is possibly the result of its being one of the weekly raid quests. Alex Ziebart characterizes Marrowgar as "the first half of Black Temple in review."
- Lady Deathwhisper is the first real challenge for a competent raid and tests your ability to get Deathwhisper's shield to 0% while controlling adds and mind-controlled (on 25-man) players. The encounter punishes players swiftly for a lack of raid awareness, but it's not too steep a learning curve, and once you've gotten her to phase 2, you've pretty much won. Melee DPS are unhappy about yet another set of mobs in the game with nasty cleaves who have to be jockeyed into position.
- The Gunship battle: Very positive reactions in general. On a personal note, I think this is one of Blizzard's best, most unique, and most interesting fights since Sunwell. I want this fight to get married and have kids.
- Deathbringer Saurfang: Phase 4 Illidan meets the spawn of Saurfang. Players everywhere wonder: why can't Saurfang Jr. cleave?

Can't say much about your distaste for vent, but I guarantee you there is a guild on your server that is doing ICC, doesn't use DKP, and has open slots in their raids. There are just as many people like you out there that hate DKP and prefer easier loot systems.
Put up a post on the wow forums, check out worldofraids.com's guild recruitment tool, or just spam what you're looking for in dalaran's general chat. If you are geared enough to do the 10 man, I bet you will find people to do it with.

Raids these days are much more accessible than they used to be. No, you're probably not going to be able to PUG your way through it at first, but there's no reason not to run ICC if you actually want to. I've got a lovely group of 10 adults that runs through all the Northrend instances together, 6 hours total a week. We're in different guilds but met through a community for mature players on my server. Our loot system is need onspec, greed offspec. Yeah, we use Vent, but it's not obnoxious vent with idiots playing metal music or whatever the kids do these days. Those 6 hours a week have gotten us up to Algalon and Heroic Anub at this point, and we cleared ICC on normal with ease.
Another group of friends that is even more casual has finished everything on normal mode right on time to go into ICC with their 6 hours a week. And this is despite having started a new raid in Naxx about the time that Ulduar came out, thus being behind the instancing curve for a while. And not all of them use Vent... they work with it. All it takes really is a group of people with similar playstyles who decide to get together for a set x number of hours a week and learn the encounters.

I love the three 5 mans, they are amazing :) thought halls of reflection when you run out of Arthas is a CHALLENGE for good DPS... :)
The 10 ICC, Lord Marrowgar.. is a pain.. got some Sweet wipes this past week but learned a lot about him.. is a fun fight in my opinion though

Got Don't Look Up the first time I did Pit of Saron. That corridor fight is probably my favorite encounter of the new 5-mans. I can see it being a pain in the ass for a tank, healer, or ranged dps, but a mobile fight is really fun as melee dps.
Also, Falric has the creepiest boss voiceover I've ever heard.
Fear....so exhilirating.

Yeah he does. It's dripping with all sorts of creepy.
"So delicious..."

As a Disc Priest I can tell you the tunnel fight is my favorite encounter in the new 5-mans too. And that's as a healer! Never had that much fun running, dodging and healing on the fly.
Also, the last fight, where you have to run from Arthas, is just awesome. I know some people who think that encounter is weak, but that entire fight I kept looking back at the tank - and over his shoulder at Arthas walking methodically closer - and thinking to myself: "OMFG it's the Lich King, we're all going to die!"
Good times

I've done the instances twice now and we took our first attempts into the 10-man version of the raid last night.
The first two 5-mans are fun and not terribly difficult. We couldn't complete the third with our DK tank, but we didn't have much trouble with a pally tank as long as I (the healer) watched my aggro on the waves.
We wiped like three times on Lord Marrowgar last night; he wasn't too hard either, just need a lot of environment awareness. We kind of face rolled Lady Deathwhisper though. We one shot her, and I expected her to give us a lot of difficulty.
All in all, I like it =D

Really? HoR is "cited for the intense difficulty of the first two bosses (or, more accurately, the trash waves preceding them)"? The escape from Arthas was more difficult for the PuG I was in the first time. The second PuG, we did the escape the first try.
This instance is quite fun, but really does need people to actually pay attention, and, IMO, is how an instance SHOULD be.

Gahhhhh! I had to cancel my account so I could concentrate a teensy bit more on finals... yet here I am trolling Wow.com. I can't wait to get in to icecrown and start gearing up my toons.
Good Luck to everyone who gets to run these, may the god of random pugness bless you =D

I feel your pain, fellow WoWer! May your withdrawal be brief.

I haven't done the raid, but I've done all three new 5-mans on heroic. Loved every single one of them. Great design, bosses and lore. Also, as healer they're much more engaging than any other 5-man in the game. H HoR really keeps me on my toes.
P.S.
What is up with the music in the Bronjahm encounter?
Jeff Dec 11th 2009 1:20PM
Bronjahm
James Brown, Godfather of Soul.
N-train Dec 11th 2009 1:36PM
Yeah its a little play on James Brown, as his nickname was the "Godfather of Soul". You'll notice Bronjahm's agro emote talks about a captive audience, and when hit he likes to make a bunch of grunts and things as James Brown did. Also, one of James Brown's hit songs was called "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", hence the bag the boss drops, as well as the throwing knife. Come to think of it, most of his loot has some reference.

You forgot the ICC Trash Boss. Pulling Trash Mobs hearkens back to the BT days of fighting your way to the next boss, but not so much of the time wasting as BT. A badly executed Trash pull could mean a wipe. You get one of the bone giants from the wall during a large 9-pull, you may as well just DI someone.
:)

We finished up DBS last night in our 10man after a great deal of strife with server crashes. I'm the main tank for the group.
Marrowgar was probably the least enjoyable. It carries a significant chance of tank death at the moment due to the mob movement bug and just dumb luck. Overall, once you get into a rhythm it becomes significantly easier.
We three shot Deathwhisper. The adds are easy enough to deal with once you get familiar. What we learned on the first two wipes is that instead of keeping some dps on the shield constantly, it's much more effective to burn adds, then have everyone dps the shield until the next set spawns.
Gunship was a lot of fun and a really epic encounter. It was not challenging at all once we got the transition down. I was the defending tank all I really had to be sure of is that the Sergeant didn't gib a healer when it spawned. Unfortunately the ship bugged and we had to soft reset after the kill. :(
Saurfang took some more adjustments from our original strategies. Two tanks on 10man is imperative. The faster that taunt transition the better. We used a hunter to kite one beast while we kept the other rooted. Took a little practice and it's definitely the hardest encounter available atm. I like the blood power mechanic since the raids skill determines how easy the fight is.
Overall, I'm thrilled with the new raid's difficulty and mechanics. The music and everything is amazingly epic.

My #1 favorite thing is that I'm upgrading my Naxx25/Uld25 gear with Epics from the Heroic IC 5-mans!
I never bothered with ToC raiding - so getting instant upgrades in the Heroic IC 5-mans is pretty sweet!
(Not to mention the badge gear I'll be buying soon)
;)

I healed 25-man ICC on Tuesday with a mild migraine (mild as in I could still sort of see and the pain was merely horrible as opposed to incapacitating) and still did fine, so I guess that must mean it's not that hard. It is all very dark colored, except for that crap on the ground from Marrowgar, so the natural instinct to get away from bright light served me well. All in all, if you're going to raid with a migraine, ICC is the place to go.
On a more serious note, the only boss that presented a real challenge was Sourfang. It's one of those delightful "personal responsibility" bosses. If your raiders can't be bothered to run away from blood beasts, Sourfang will put out too many marks and you will wipe. I like this mechanic.
The gunship battle makes me think that perhaps I should re-spec and become a bear. Rocket-butt-bear!!!

i got don't look up on my first group. it was a pug. needless to say, we were quite happy about it.

Running from the Lich King in HoR got my heart pounding...that's how I know it's good/fun.
Flame Dec 11th 2009 1:49PM
I know what you mean. Doing it the second time (first time we bugged it and got on the other side of the wall >.
