But what if its the unspoken rule on your server that if you can use, then need it? Got a crafting profession? Take the orb. JC's, LW's, and Tailors are especially the one that need them.
Every one and his mom wants a new spell thread/armor patch hot off of the AH, and doesnt want to have to wait around to run a 5 man or cash in some badges. Thats why that tailor/LW is going to need on every single orb: you see 5-15g, he sees a spell thread/patch that will get him a hell of a lot more.
JC's are similar: we make icy prisms every day (or should!) b.c they can get us dragon-eyes and epic gems. Once again, you see just a frozen orb that wont get squat on the AH, that JC sees a potential icy prism.
Someone on my realms forums said it 100% perfectly: All can use? Good all can need.

Um, yeah, I found that bit a bit confusing. Why would a tailor NOT roll need on a Frozen Orb? Seems kinda idiotic to complain about people rolling need and winning when they can actually use the thing in question. Why even have a "need before greed" loot system if you're going to whine when people use it properly?

I'll say it again: I don't have to give you my stuff just because you would like it for your profession.
Needing something everyone can use when you know that the convention is to greed is just being a ninja. This is not a difficult concept, is it?

But thats the thing: the convention is not to greed something you can use, and will use right away. The idea of this loot system is to NEED if you NEED it, and I NEED the frozen orb to make something.
If you feel that you need it, then FFS, NEED ON IT! Its not being greedy unless you have 50 of them lying around.
As for the price of the orbs, from what I hear, they are more of a hassle to put them on the AH. I know that on BWL they go for 5-15g, and I personally dont feel like spending ANY gold on something I can earn in a 5man, especially when I run several per day. I'm bound to get at least one, if not more than that.

Need, on my server, doesn't get used on those items that are not BOP. If it's sellable .. then it's greed. See? Money? Greed. BOE blues? Same thing. Greed. Or, at the very least, ASK if you can need. Same with needing stuff for offspec. Ask.
