Dungeon Finder tricks and tips

More tips and tricks for the new system after the break.
Other tips we've heard: finding an instance as tank or healer will go even faster than trying to get in one as DPS, so if you can specialize into a more useful role and just want to grind out instances fast, do that. Damage meters are supposedly broken -- they haven't figured out how to track ranged damage across realms quite yet. Which may be a good thing, as lots of players never liked following those meters anyway. The vote kicking system seems to be working well -- the number one reason we've heard that players are kicking each other is that they're going AFK without notice, so if you're in a random PuG queue, be sure to be ready when it pops up to do the instance ASAP. Oh, and let's just agree right here and now: Frozen Orbs are Need, unless you don't want them for some reason.
And maybe the most important tip we've heard: it's important to make sure that your gear matches the instance you're doing. The number one issue so far seems to be players who show up for a Heroic in greens, or people who queue up to tank without having any tanking gear or experience at all. Thanks to the new system, there's lots of groups to run, and everyone will get the gear they need to do what they want. So don't waste players' time now by trying to take on something you can't do and ending the group in wipes or making other players step up for you. Start out low and easy, running regular instances, and then when you think you're ready for something tougher, move on up the ladder to Heroics.

In that case it kind of makes sense, though I've been greeding always and haven't had it happen yet. IMO compared to a bronze drake this is different than a Bronze drake because you actually NEED it because it is something you don't have that is rare, so he was right in needing it. Greeding is correct on Orbs because they aren't THAT rare, and nobody ACTUALLY needs one, and you can buy em off the AH as opposed to not being able to buy a drake on the AH.
But more ninjas may mean needing is required. I'm gonna stick to greed until my hand is forced as it's the Holidays and I am trying to have more faith in humanity.

I guess I've just been lucky but I've hit Greed without looking every time and I'm developing a small hoard of orbs.
Barinthos Dec 12th 2009 5:29PM
Frozen Orbs are Need? Bad advice is bad.
If I see someone roll need on a frozen orb I follow suit and if I win, I immediately tell them all to roll on the orb again. No one NEEDS a frozen orb, it's just something that would be nice to get at the end of a run.
Elathil Dec 12th 2009 5:37PM
My entire realm always Needed Frozen Orbs (which lead to a few funny moments on the ptr) but since the patch, I've not seen one person Need an orb. Cross-realm it seems that Greed is the rule, if only because people are trying to be on the safe side.
Which is gonna be fun when I get my Priest up to 80 and I actually need those to make stand-in gear for her. ...Though I suppose I could try to and say I "need" a Frozen Orb to make Icy Prisms if I REALLY wanted to.

I really miss the advantage to defaulting to a greed roll for an item that noone is supposed to need. It just allows ninjas to use the need roll and take off with it. If everyone need rolls who wants a shot at it, there are no ninjas. If you are greed rolling out of principle, you just took yourself out of consideration should someone roll need. Personally, I don't use them so i just pass.

eventually things will stabilize... when they first appeared everyone had to ask... throughout my guild we had different opinions, and then that stabilized to need... when we started pugging more often we found that Ursin was more greed so i switched to that... soon it will all balance out in the battlegroups- some will need and some will greed.
Slaytanic Dec 12th 2009 6:34PM
Agrred. Frozen Orbs have been greed for as long there have been Frozen Orb. It's an unspoken rule.
Not that it matters, anyway. Their value with all the heroics being run has completely collapsed. They go in US-Uldaman AH for 10g each. Sad.
Cyanea Dec 12th 2009 6:38PM
I've run with full pugs of random people about fifty times by now and I have NEVER run across a group where someone Needs on the Frozen Orbs.
Kakistocracy Dec 12th 2009 6:43PM
People still use Frozen Orbs?
I haven't seen anyone need one yet.
Viper007Bond Dec 12th 2009 7:22PM
Frozen orbs go for like 10 gold on my server. Not even worth the trouble to stick it on the AH really.
qoa Dec 12th 2009 11:07PM
Frozen orbs have been instant Need for about a year on Nathrezin.
vazhkatsi Dec 13th 2009 2:43AM
orbs are worth 15g on my server. yeah its annoying to get ninjas, but i always have a few orbs on me cause i tank too many pugs(got the pet already) and frankly they're kinda useless
Gorgondor Dec 13th 2009 6:46PM
Jubei'Thos has always rolled Need for these, i think it starts out in the early expansion where people feel since just about everyone can make use of them, and no-one wants to have it ninja'd, everyone just rolls need so there is no way for 1 person to take the advantage.
Personally, i'd actually like to see blizzard perhaps add something special for items such as frozen orbs, where you don't actually even have to roll, or make them considered greed only items, disabling the need button like they have with gear that is not suitable for your class.
Sehvekah Dec 13th 2009 7:59PM
Orbs are greed for me because I just don't care. Nothing I can make with them is useful to me anymore(my gear's all 200+ items and I already made my engineering goggles), and with the AH prices on Muradin they're just a few gold off from vendor trash *if* they sell. Not worth getting all bent outta shape over 5-8g, so I Greed-and-forget.
Euphande Dec 14th 2009 2:47AM
I've had an equal proportion of people who seem to be ninjas (wait till everyone else rolls Greed, then Need) and people for whom it seems to be server custom (just go ahead and roll Need). My server custom is Greed, but if I'm in a completely random pug I tend to roll Need and then offer re-rolls if everyone doesn't follow suit. If I'm with guildies and 1-2 PUGs we wait to see what they roll and follow suit.
Price of Frozen orbs has been cut in half, I do have to say. Not that I need any.
Evelinda Dec 15th 2009 9:22AM
jubei'thos is a need server... but i'm rolling greed on orbs when i'm pugging. i've already got about 10 of the things sitting around doing nothing on various chars, and i dont really need any more
Puntable Dec 30th 2009 11:27AM
The rules for need and greed have been the same for 5 years, but it seems some people need to be constantly reminded. You roll NEED if you are going to immediately use and/or equip the item, otherwise, it is greed.
The argument that "everyone rolls need because everyone can sell it" is BOGUS. That would mean that every single BoE item is always need, thus denying it to a player that may actually need it as an upgrade.
For example the Battered Hilt. If you are going to do the quest and equip the weapon it is NEED. If you are going to sell it on the AH it is GREED.
Turtell Jan 5th 2010 7:38PM
Since Alexstrasza is such a high pop realm, frozen orbs had already undergone massive price decreases before the release of the dungeon finder. With 3.3, they tanked even more and are now selling on the AH for 6-8g. I greed them because nobody would EVER ninja something so worthless, and I mean come on, have a little faith in humanity. Do you seriously think you need to be that anal about protecting every little potential gold you could possibly get your hands on?
If you think you can't trust anybody to follow so small a courtesy as greeding on orbs and those worthless ilvl 200 BOEs, then there is something extremely wrong with you, you crazy person. You probably also don't trust the tank to tank or the healer to heal so you 71 point blood specced a DK and make every pull in the instance yourself.
Bobthebuilder Jan 16th 2010 8:04AM
If everyone NEEDs over greed then it eliminates Ninja rolls. common sence. you just have to tell everyone in the group in the begining what the rule is.
Bobthebuilder Jan 16th 2010 8:17AM
Blizz should just eliminate Ninja rolling on Orbs by making it ONE CHOICE. Greed thats it. ive never met anyone who passes on Orbs. we dont need a NEED GREED PASS System on stuff like that all that does is cause problems. cross server or on same servers.
Like in drakes. if you already have it theres a system to make you Auto Pass. why cant we have a system to just greed on orbs
