WoW Rookie: Gearing up with the LFG feature

Plotting your path from zero to hero? "Last night, I got my alt mage to level 80 (woop) and thought I'd set about doing some heroics to get those 'phat loots' and a have a bit of fun," writes reader Hedwinkle of EU Daggerspine. "However, I was disappointed to see that I couldn't queue up for any heroics using the new tool, as my gear level wasn't high enough. I mean, it's all blue gear from the later instances, so I guess I have two questions ...
"1. What is the gear level required to allow me to queue up for random heroics using the new tool?
"2. What is the best way for me to go about getting my gear level higher? People on my server have very little interest now in finding a group the 'old-fashioned' way."
As it turns out, Hedwinkle's not the only one who's been puzzling over the details of how the new Looking for Group tool matches and places group members. Luckily, blue poster Zarhym had some answers that should reassure all of WoW Rookie's fresh level 80s.
First, let's look at how the dungeon finder works (with information straight from Blizzard):
All dungeons possess a minimum and maximum level range. These ranges are displayed within the Dungeon Finder window just to the right of each dungeon's name. If your level is too high or low for a specific dungeon, it will not populate as an option when you switch to the "Specific Dungeons" option from the drop-down menu.
Some dungeons also require attunement to enter, often in the form of a key or quest, and many of the more difficult dungeons (like Wrath of the Lich King Heroics) possess a minimum gear requirement. If you meet the level requirements of a particular dungeon, but not the additional requirements, a lock icon will replace the check box next to the dungeon's name. To see which additional requirements were not met, simply hover over the lock icon; a window noting that "You may not queue for this dungeon" will appear and any missing requirement(s) will be listed below.
This icon will also appear for group leaders if a group member does not meet all dungeon requirements (level, gear, and attunement), and the list of missing requirements will also specify to which group member they apply.

Now, on to your questions.
What is the gear level required to allow me to queue up for random heroics using the new tool?
The debate over exact numbers associated with the dungeon finder system is just beginning to heat up. A determined search on the internet may uncover some educated guesses, but it's still conjecture at this point. It's fairly certain that there are different gear average thresholds for specific instances and levels of content, but the numbers have been neither revealed nor discovered. Nor do we know if certain item slots (trinkets, rings, etc.) are excluded from the averaging.
What we do know is this:
- According to Zarhym, "There are circumstances however where, say, a player in dungeon or questing blues or greens will be unable to use the Dungeon Finder to queue for Heroic Trial of the Champion, Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron or Halls of Reflection."
- Blizzard considers the dungeon finder tool (and the associated gear thresholds) "fairly forgiving." It probably won't take you long at all -- a day or two of regular level 80 instances -- to bring your gear up to par to begin doing Heroics.
- Similar to the gear checks in Battlegrounds, the dungeon finder system will check all of the gear in your inventory.
Zarhym suggests that some of the tougher Heroic dungeons are best reserved for more "appropriately geared" players. If you're locked out of Heroics, that would indicate that gearing up in non-Heroics is in order. Zarhym recommends using the random instance option for the instances you can run or creating a pre-formed party on your realm without using the Dungeon Finder.
Unless you're playing at very odd hours, we think you should give the dungeon finder another shot. An informal survey of WoW.com friends on Twitter shows both EU and US players are having very good luck using the dungeon finder to get into regular, non-Heroic instances.
- @jameswallis I misclicked the new LFG options and did two non-heroics before I realised. No shortage of non-HC random PUGs in EU, it seems.
- @ryankinsler No the new LFG is helping me find non heroics. It totally changed the game for me. I enjoyed WOW before but now I LOVE it!
- @Dlangar My son has run well over 20 or 30 5-man normal's in the last 3 days, all pugs, all through the LFG tool, almost none heroic. FTW.
- @arras I've found a few regular runs on my recently 80 DK, maybe have to wait an extra minute or two

To say the gear check is forgiving is an understatement. I've been able to enter all the new icc 5mans with my tank alt ever since I reached enough gear to have about 27K hp. I've seen bear tanks with 50k hp get pretty low in Pit of Saron and Halls of Reflection at times, so I'm happy that they have never come up as the daily random hc for me. And yes, I know a lot of the damage can be avoided if everyone works together, but expecting that from a pug is a bit unrealistic.

I swear if ONE MORE LVL 80 TANK gets into a Nexus PuG, runs off ahead not giving anybody time to loot or mana up, and then DROPS PARTY because he got/didn't get his SANTA HAT...I am going...to scream.

Anyone know what those shoulders are that Tauren has? The ones that are about 12 feet wide...

When I hit 80, I too was blocked. My gear was a mix of item levels 132 and 178 or so. I went to the auction house and bought whatever I could so that in each slot I had a level 174 or 178 item (plus two 200s). After that, I could queue for heroics. That was all it took - 200 or 300 gold and a trip to the AH.

A tip for someone who might not want to spend the gold - I don't know if they lock them as well but queue for the new regular versions of the 5 mans, as well as TOC 5. You'll get far better gear from them then you would in something like H HoL.

"If you'd still like to enter one of the harder instances, however, it's certainly possible. Simply form your group on your own realm using the global Looking For Group channel."
Alas, LFG is *not* a global channel anymore.

If the DF tool looks at all the gear in your inventory, and you've recently been filling in Loremaster quests and have some ilvl 50 greens in there, things could get amusing.
I wonder whether this was a reason for some of the OP's issues?

This is off-topic, but does anyone know how to ask the columnists where they get their graphics? The people in this image of the looking for group are on my server and I was wondering if the author of the article is also on my server.

"However, I was disappointed to see that I couldn't queue up for any heroics using the new tool, as my gear level wasn't high enough. I mean, it's all blue gear from the later instances"
That's complete BS. I was allowed to queue for any heroics except ToC5 and ICC5 as soon as my DK dinged 80, and my gear was worse than that.
(Heroic ToC5/ICC5 opened up when the gearscore addon rated me at around 3500).
Anyway, the easiest and fastest way to gear up is to run normal ToC5/ICC5 for a day or two. It's ridiculously simple, so for god's sake stop moaning about gearing up, it's far easier now than it's ever been. Normal ICC5 drops Ulduar10 level gear ffs...

A feture i wold love to see added wold be a way for everyone to rate a player with the dungon finder tool . Like a ebay type rating (closest thing i could think of off the top of my head) i know i can ignore players after they have come to a dungon and been complet douches but a system that wold lock a player after sya a 100 ppl mark them as just plain bad is needed . say lock them from the tool for a week after the first time there rating reaches dumbass then reset it let them have a second chance then lock them for a month the next and permaban them the 3rd.
Related to that . the vote kick option needs to be fixed so it can be used more often then once per dungon . quite a few times now (mainly only while lvling lowbe alts) there will be 4 of us who say hello get to doing our jobs and end up having to kick the rogue or pally who runs in circles while we pull just leaching free xp . the replacment comes in this one thinks it's funny to run way ahead agro all the mobs and buble wipeing the group but we can't kick him becouse we got rid of the slacker who was atleast not killing us . our only option then is to all leave group saying goodbye to 3 other competent friendly players
I don't want to be one of the ppl QQing over the new tool . I think it is kick ass and love that blizz took the time to implement it. i just wold like to see some more control over it before it is ruined by the 2% of the population that piss the rest of us off .

I had this problem where I couldn't join a random heroic. I got three items, and the final one took me from an average ilvl of exactly 177 (counting each slot equally, including trinkets and staff) to 178.56 by replacing 162 green pants with 187 blues, and as soon as I had that last item the random heroic choice went from grey to white. I was left with one green item on, a trinket. All of my highest gear was the gear I had equipped (no better stuff in my bags).
I know this still leaves a lot unknown, but it's just another data point may help figure it out. Even if they, say, don't include trinkets, mine were both 174 so they would have had little impact on this average.
The gear requirement is probably higher than it really needs to be because once you meet it, you are eligible for all ilvl200-dropping heroics, up through the hardest ones like UP and HoL, rather than allowing you to run, say, UK and Nexus, which any fresh 80 in questing greens could do.
The best solution is probably to run regular random dailies after you hit 76 or 77. A friend who recently hit 80 did this and he didn't run into the heroic gear lock-out.
Oneiroi Dec 17th 2009 11:42AM
It's not complicated.
You get to level 80, you start running Trial of the Champion and the new 5 man's and you get purples 200 or higher.
After you've run those at least twice through, you'll be fine to run many of the heroics.
Video Games Blog Dec 17th 2009 1:08PM
The trash in the new IC 5 mans are as tough or tougher to take down than the "vanilla" WOTLK heroic bosses.
Bently Dec 18th 2009 7:20AM
You're forgetting some starter epics that can be obtained as well to boost your gear.
They include the Ebonweave set that a tailor can make, some boe bracers that you can either buy on the ah or buy from someone who has enough emblems to sell them, and the titansteel spellpower weapon, the offhand piece a scribe can make.
I'm sure thats not all but thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Do you have a guide on how to get started in Dungeons? I'm a level 80 Arms warrior that has never grouped in a dungeon. I have all epic PVP honor gear from Battlegrounds. Will that be good enough? Need/Greed, buffs, potions/elixirs/food, etc?
lisapoisso Dec 22nd 2009 1:22PM
Until recently, WoW Rookie has focused more on the lower levels of the game. Now that WoW's design slingshots new players so rapidly into endgame content, we'll be producing more and more articles designed for the fresh level 80 player. Until then, try the Grouping With Others section of our WoW Rookie guide at http://www.wow.com/rookie/#gwo. Good luck and have fun!

Add yet another thing I love about the LFG tool, it keeps people whould should NOT be in heroics, like the OP of this post, out of them. WOLK heroics may be faceroll except for the last four, but that doesn't mean @ 80 immediatly your G2G unless you spend a but-load on craftables. I ran into this problem last night-Tank was in Blues/Greens, etc. We got through H AN just fine, BUT that is because I was healing and ridiculously over gear the instance. Their is NOTHING wrong with doing reg dungeons for a week or 3 getting some EoT together and getting your 2 peice T9 to start. The reason this is such a huge issue for me is, your not impacting just yourself, your impacting four other people.
