It also doesn't work well with people who have special character letters in their names. Blizzard should disallow those and force them to use another letter instead.

as a player who has two characters with ascii characters in their names, i can tell you it most certainly does work. it used to not be allowed, but since those 'special character letters' are actually letters blizzard has changed their policy to allow them. i don't know why they would go back on that now. it's not blizzards fault you think the world revolves around the american keyboard. but trying to ignore my dk 'táveren' by typing '/ignore taveren' won't work because that's NOT her name. if you hate my tanking so much that you never want to run with me again though, feel free to ask me for the ascii code, ask me to say something so you can right-click ignore, or go look it up yourself.

What's the code so we can do it now? Don't know anything about your tanking, but your attitude is piss-poor.

You could remember their *guild* name, look that up on WoW Armory, then copypasta their name from there. One issue on that, though, might be that a lot of people who are jerks might not have guilds, or switch guilds so often you look them up and the roster hasn't been updated

How delightfully english-centric of you. There are 5 official translations in Europe alone, four of which frequently use "non-standard" letters as a normal, natural part of the language. Banning those would be plain dumb. Also, portrait-clicking doesn't always work. Far as I can tell, works on your realm, not others. For other realms, the always working method is to right-click on their name in the chat window and pick Ignore from there.

On that note, I HATE when people use random non-standard letters in their names. It's like they do it specifically so you can't type their name in the chatbox to whisper them. I wish Blizzard would just block the use of those non-standard letters(at least on American servers, I know Germans love the umlaut in their names). It's a big annoyance.

"táveren"I'm almost willing to forgive you for naming your toon that. almost.
12-23-2009 @ 5:14PM
We've strayed from the topic - Tatsu, what are the specific codes for your name so we can all be sure to avoid at least one douche?
12-23-2009 @ 5:17PM
I'm perfectly ok with correct usages of special characters, but it get's tiring seeing people use 10 different special characters just to recreate a name that was already taken by someone else.Renée? Alright. TéЯmïñätöЯ? Hell no.
12-23-2009 @ 5:32PM
cutaia, i agree with you. unfortunately you can't fix stupid. by allowing Renée, you're allowing TéЯmïñätöЯ too. maybe some day people will learn that naming like that isn't cool, it's stupid. i'm not counting on it happening any time soon though. fizzle, i didn't have an attitude when i wrote that. if you read it with one that's on you. blizz won't be banning the use of ascii characters simply cuz you don't like them.

Why all the hate on my name?
12-23-2009 @ 8:54PM
For the US servers, the special characters are against TOS (or is it EULA?). My Pally, Colerejuste, used to have an accented e in there somewhere, much to the delight of a few French speakers. Then one day, I raised a ticket to report some arrakoa who had trouble keeping their hats on their heads, and the GM made me change my name to remove the accented e.Poor Colerejuste. He's just a angry spacegoat with a righteous name that doesn't look right in any language.

Just so ya know, the funny à in his name is Hold ALT, then press 133 on your number pad. =D

Tat:A: táveren is a ripoff name from a mediocre series of books, (at least past book 7... "rolling ring of earth and fire" was cool, but everything else? meh at best) and has nothing to do with "american keyboards". You're not using the accent for another language (no, the Old Tongue doesn't count).B: Since you decided to throw your name out there, technically, isn't "táveren" against the ToS? I mean, it's a reference to/name from another series of books and another company's intellectual property... and since all WoW characters are the property of Blizz, that just sets them up for some liability issues, hence the rules. Just sayin' Like damned near everything out there, there will be people who use it legitimately and those who exploit it. And I already checked, yer not on my battle group so that's one extra /ignore spot left available.
