Blizzard's comments on the in-game Cataclysm earthquakes

The comments are somewhat cryptic, but that is par for the course with Blizzard. They like to tease -- to hold the carrot in front of you and make you run for it. But the evidence we presented Monday was pretty solid, and it's gained even more traction in the community and around the net; so this is an interesting follow up to it all.
The comments thus far after the break.
Wryxian says in response to "Did Any of you saw that? There was a shake in Dalaran.... Is this the beginning of the Cata Pre event?...Or was it just me?":
It was just you. Seriously, earthquakes leading up to some kind of cataclysm? I lol'd.He goes on to say:
*the earth shakes a bit* o.O
You see how my temporary snowman avatar appears to bob from side to side? Well, the thing is, I'm standing perfectly still. The earth is moving, I tell you! *cough*In response to "Is it only me laughing on the Earthquake in a flying City?:P" Wryxian replies:
We try not to read into blue comments too much, since reading in-between the lines can be a crap shoot sometimes. But in this case we think it's notable enough, especially with the absence of Blizzard outright denying any linkage, that it's worth bringing to everyone's attention. Read into it what you will, but we think the meaning of Wryxian's comments are quite clear: there is some linkage between the earthquakes and "some kind of cataclysm."The Kirin Tor want to ensure that even though their city is no longer actually in the ground anymore, it still receives the same treatment as the rest of Azeroth... or something. ;-)
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Blizzard, News items, Rumors, Cataclysm

Bigfoot, UFO's, Nessie, the Bermuda Triangle...now earthquakes in Azeroth. Somebody call Leonard Nemoy. I think this is grounds for an "In Search Of" episode. Oh dear I believe I just dated myself.

The blues comment had multiple emoticons, not the least of all a Winky Smile.
;) Look at him, with his miserable pile of secrets. Sends chills down the spine. He -knows- about the Invisible Bunnies, but he isn't telling.
If a Winky Smile doesn't mean Completely Serious Business to you, then I am afraid I will have to call you a lost cause and move on. Godspeed.

"What is a winky smiley face? A miserable little pile of secrets!"
Also of note, the ever elusive and confusing winky frowney face. ;(
Angrycelt Dec 30th 2009 4:33PM
@Goolie - right there with ya, man.
Let's see, we already know where to find yeti, the original Naxx would qualify as a UFO back in the day, there's Nessie trapped in the "magical tram lake", and a giant vortex in the middle of the ocean. Yep. I think we just slapped an age on the devs too.

Something secret this way comes!
Conspiracies abound!
Stogey Dec 30th 2009 2:41PM
Just had an earthquake here near San Diego, I am pretty sure Blizzard was involved.

Why is everyone so worried about the next expansion? Dont get me wrong Cataclysm will be a exciting xpac, but the current expansion is not even close to being over. Arthas still lives. I think everyone needs to stop looking to what is coming and enjoy what we have now. Its articles and speculation such as this that take away from what blizzard just put out and not what they plan on releasing god knows when. And go ahead and down rank me. People only like to down rank when it doesnt agree with thier own views weather its fact or not.
Enjoy what time we have left in Northrend. Who cares about deathwing till he sunders azeroth apart.
Reuben Dec 30th 2009 2:41PM
I actually blame this on Blizzard. It's hard not to look toward the future considering the big announcement, and then all the information that we've been given. If everyone is a little overly-excited (and they are), it's Blizzard's fault.
Chris256 Dec 30th 2009 2:54PM
um... it kinda is close to being over. this is the last major patch and they can't stretch it out that long. If you ask me this thing can last until September and 1/4 of that will be cataclysm world events.
Shizukera Dec 30th 2009 3:33PM
I have to agree. The new expansion will undoubtedly be very cool, but people seem to be forgetting that there's still *this* story to complete. That's why I wish Blizzard had put more focus on Icecrown events in the Blizzcon announcements; Arthas going down should be huge, and instead it's been overshadowed by dragons and worgen and goblins and little tremors that don't have anything to do with what's going on now.
Grrrr. I'm buzzing about Arthas dying and who's going to die in the final battle and who'll be the next Lich King, but everyone around me is always on about what they're excited about in Cataclysm, no one seems to really care to speculate about what's going to happen in just a few weeks' time, and it's killing a lot of the joy of ending an expansion, at least for me.
*stops rambling, prepares for downranking* :P

Well, some of us were only mildly interested in WotLK. And some of us are ecstatic about Cataclysm.
As for me? I'll leave you to fight Darth Arthus. I'll read the highlights in the Gadgetzan Times. I'm ready to roll a worgen!
Vaulkner Dec 30th 2009 7:33PM
@Shizukera
I know for me, I'm more excited about cataclysm than the conclusion of the ICC story because I'm just plain sick of Arthas at this point.
I never found him an interesting character to begin with, and what's ironic is that the most interesting thing he's done around this xpac was technically back in bc with the scourge invasion event. Since then, he's just popped up occasionally to antagonize us and sometimes get beaten back while spouting "This...isn't...over..." in all his cartoonish villany. *Yawn*
Illidan hardly ever showed his face during bc, but he was still a far more interesting character - as were his lieutenants. I'm not expecting much from Deathwing in terms of personality, but atleast we can move on from Arthas' monopolization of the spotlight since warcraft 3. Fighting something that isn't undead will be a nice change of pace too (unless you're a worgen, but atleast the forsaken make you legitimately hate them enough to want to kick their bony butts).
pcj Dec 30th 2009 2:39PM
@ those missing out: if it's anything like the Wrath lead-up, there'll be more of them after awhile and you'll see them.
Hairfish Dec 30th 2009 2:41PM
As a Califronian, I can tell you for certain that just because you don't feel the quakes doesn't mean they aren't happening. ;)
I can also tell you that cataclysmic change *can* happen overnight, but seldom does. We've been waiting on ~ and prepareing for ~ The Big One for decades.
...what was THAT???? O.O
Hairfish Dec 30th 2009 2:43PM
"Califronian"
I fial. :P
Panserbjorn Dec 30th 2009 2:43PM
If you watch the Cataclysm trailer, the first line if not one of the first lines is "As the battle against the Lich King continues" (or something like that) so I don't think its odd if the first signs of the cataclysm are showing up already.
heath Dec 30th 2009 2:44PM
Depending on how Dalaran is suspended in the air, it makes perfect sense that it would feel an earthquake. If its somehow tied to the land, but suspended above it, the city would move when the land moves.
Whatever spell holds the city up has to have some type of reference point and, odds are, its the land under it (or maybe even the mountains kind of around it). So if the reference point(s) moves, the city moves.
...or some such...

Or, it could just be floating?
hjaycom Dec 30th 2009 2:47PM
Ever since the release of WoTLK Dal has always shaken and I beleive it is due to VH instance?
Moonkinmaniac Dec 30th 2009 2:51PM
I think its caused when people fly in on mounts. It shakes and says "you are about to be dismounted" or something.
