The Queue: The new standard

That's a picture of my hunter above. She can use some better gear, and hopefully this weekend it'll be her turn to get decked out in tier 9. It's just so easy and fun. Plus I really like the idea of all my 80's having their tier 9 shoulders to look at on the loading screen. That's not strange, is it?
Saberix asked...
"Is tier 9 gear the new standard in gear? Am I going to be teased if I don't have it?"
While I think the answer deserves at least an article or two written about it, I'd say yes, tier 9 has developed into the new standard of gear upon which everyone is judged off of. I know that from a mechanical perspective tier 9 is far from necessary to run everything but Icecrown Citadel, and is most certainly not necessary for heroics. Yet when I go into a heroic and see a tank with less than 40,000 HP, part of me sighs and wishes for a new one, even though a 30,000 HP tank is going to do just fine.
The standard is irrational, and doesn't really do WoW any good. But nonetheless, it's something people have to deal with. One way to deal with it is to get your tier 9 shoulders as quickly as possible, those 30 badges are pretty easy to obtain. Once you've gotten them people will just look at you briefly and say "oh, tier 9 shoulders, good to go." Of course if they're using something like gear score (which is equally ridiculous as any tier 9 standard), then they might see otherwise.
The other thing to remember is that when people complain, just ignore them. If you're doing 1500 DPS in a heroic, then you're ready for the heroic. If you're not, then take a look at your rotation and spend some time on the practice dummy. If you still can't hit 1500 DPS, take a look at your gear and see what's missing. I've been able to pull 1500 DPS using level 70 Black Temple / Sunwell / Archimonde gear, so it's not too hard to hit. If you do need some gear, check the AH for a couple BoE level 80 blues and epics, and don't forget to roll need on any blues from heroics that can help you. Then when people complain that you're not in tier 9, you can just say "Since when do heroics require more than 1500 DPS?"
People will usually stop complaining after that.
Finally, remember too that this won't be an issue in six months or so when Cataclysm is out.
Averrex asked...
"What's the defense cap?"
Defense has a soft cap of 540. It's "soft" because defense still is useful after 540, just not an absolute necessary. If you don't have 540 defense though, you'll get yourself crit by raid boss mobs, and that's no fun. It's pretty easy to get these days with tier 9 gear, so it shouldn't be as big of an issues as it once was. The defense soft cap really don't apply for druids either, since they're talented into being uncritable.
Logan asked...
"When is Cataclysm going to release? Do you have any leaks?"
We know that Cataclysm is going to release in 2010, but not any specific time-frame therein. In other words, we do not know an exact date. Sites like Amazon are not listing the correct date, the just list something so they can get you to pre-order the game. When the release date is finally leaked or announced, trust me, you'll hear it here right away.

The T9 2-piece bonuses are generally very good, and t9.32 might be preferable to level 245 non-set epics to get these bonuses. The whole point is kind of moot though, since ToC25 has been puggable for quite some time, making trophies to get tier 9.45 very accessible.
Hoggersbud Dec 30th 2009 4:05PM
Depends on the itemization of your tier versus the non-set items, and the set bonus. I wouldn't pass on the DPS 4pT9 for DK's for example, but for other classes there may be some appeal.
Besides, shoulders are more visible than gloves.
Magetank Dec 30th 2009 4:10PM
The 245 tier costs, in addition to emblems, a trophy that you get through raiding 25man ToC or Heroic version. Also, if you have 174 shoulders and 226 gloves, the best way to increase your dps would likely be to replace your shoulders.
jaybrous Dec 30th 2009 4:16PM
Also worth considering is how badly you want the 4 pc bonus, and whether the offset shoulders or offset helm will be a bigger upgrade for you.
Sokzernkal Dec 30th 2009 4:22PM
If your buy the 245 bonus only if your 4p is crap
otherwise Head/shoulders/hand/legs with a crafted chestpeice is USUALLY the way to go
It is for my Fury warrior 2 peice t9 (hands/legs) with 245 head and shoulders with a Titanium Razorplate
and that works just great because 5% extra crit on HS and slam? I've already got a 42% crit rate with rampage flowing anyway! screw you 4 peice!
Blondies Dec 30th 2009 6:26PM
This is especially true for tanks as the setbonueses are generally not as important as it is for dps classes.
Riley Dec 31st 2009 2:58AM
i thought i should point out, that for rogues, t8>t9, and by the time you can get 4 pieces of 9.245, you should be doing evis only, which makes the 2 piece useless, and the 4 isn't really good enough to go for on its own

2 questions
Lately there seems to be a large increase of Hackers in the past 3 weeks there has been 4 people at my workplace that has been hacked (Me included) and we don't even play together, is there any reason for this?
I always been curious on the direction i'm going in wow i have a few solid 80's ready for icecrown and been farming son of hodir rep but...should i be raiding i find raiding guilds sometimes drain the fun outta the game and to hide from them i roll another toon and level him i dunno why. My question is...
what is expected of the average player when they hit 80?
Darksky Dec 30th 2009 4:20PM
Just a quick clarifying question regarding the 540 Defense "cap" and it being about avoiding crits from bosses. Prefacing this with two caveats: I've never played a tank, and I have old film in my photographic memory, so... could be completely mis-remembering something here.
Anyway...
I remember reading in one of the loading screen "tips" something to the effect that "while players can make critical strikes, enemy mobs cannot." Again, over-exposed photographic memory film may be playing a huge part in my confusion, but... did I seriously misread it, or is the tip wrong? Maybe it only meant spell crits or special attack crits or something like that... don't know. Just hoping somebody else remembers that tip a bit more accurately and can de-confuse me.
Danke!
AutumnBringer Dec 30th 2009 4:22PM
That was spell crits specifically, I remember seeing that tip.
Mayhew Dec 30th 2009 4:23PM
As you suspected, that tip applied solely to spell crits.
Sokzernkal Dec 30th 2009 4:23PM
You've read the tip wrong
the Tip stated that Mobs cannot land a Critical hit with SPELLS
this meaning any caster mob cannot and willnot crit you....so could be tanked by a retadin with RF on basically
Hoggersbud Dec 30th 2009 4:25PM
You are mistaken, enemy mobs can and do crit, bosses at least.
I'd have to look through a list of those tips before I could even guess at what you did read.
Darksky Dec 30th 2009 4:31PM
Thanks, fellow Azerothians! I figured that was the case, just wanted to double-check. (Stupid being at work and not being able to log in & check...)

I run predominately heroics on my pally tank. I raid on occasion but not often, so my gear 75% i226-232, with a couple 219s and 200s (some of the i 200 are great for heroics). Buffed, I sit at 39-40k health. I have no issues with people in whatever gear they come in from ICC25/ToGC to sub i200. As long as there is a decent healer, I'll carry you through.
Lately I have been having a change of heart on that. After doing a dozen runs where I was the top of the DPS meters, I really hate it when people show up and can't even put out 1k dps. Even if recount is still acting up (not sure if it is or not) but you can tell right off the bat who's putting out damage and who's not.
I understand people need to gear up, but going into a FoS with i136-i186 gear then wondering why no one wants to do PoS with you has got to stop.
Please people, if you are going to do heroics, at least try like you want to it. This sub 1.5k dps stuff is getting old and has to stop. If you don't have the gear, at least learn to play your class that 90% of your dps.
Sorcefire Dec 30th 2009 7:06PM
Actually it's your gear that predominately impacts your overall dps. Newly-minted 80s have the same spells available to them as raid-geared 80s, which means seeing someone's DPS go from 1k to 4-6k is largely a matter of gear.
That means that over 90% of the DPS you do at level 80 is determined by your gear, not the rotation. The remaining 10% is the learning curve for perfecting rotations. I don't think the argument of skill vs. gear can be made here.
I DO think that what we are seeing is a combination of newly minted 80s with partially bad gear, lazy players who don't even try, and those oddball Ebay players who don't have a clue what to do with the character they just bought.
The whole system is great, but needs to be tweaked to better align people gear-wise. All this whoo-hah about carrying people and elitism would go away if people were grouped with other players with similar gear. It would make it harder and slower to do instances, but it would be a balm to the bruised egos and hurt feelings the system today is engendering.
Doxa Dec 30th 2009 4:38PM
Yeah, my Pally tank has a GS of about 5350 or so and has about 40.7K HP. 40k HP isn't too easy to hit and requires that you stack a lot of stamina.
Great gear has become a real crutch for a lot of players. I was booted from a H PoS last week cause I had "too little HP" at 27k unbuffed and the healer couldn't keep up.
A day later we were doing the weekly raid (Razorscale) and couldn't get a tank. After about 30 minutes of looking and waiting we got desperate and I was nominated to solo-tank it in 1/2 blue gear with 32k fully raid buffed HP.
We didn't finish but I tanked all the adds by myself and then tanked Razorscale down to 90k HP left before we wiped (all with a single shaman healer because our druid healer died in blue death-fire).
Gear is helpful but for those people that are hung up on it (such as kicking someone for a low GS) really just demonstrate that they probably rely on their gear to make up for their lack of skill.
JayAtWork Dec 30th 2009 5:14PM
I agree with almost all of these comments, but if you have a gear level of below 2-- you cannot get into FoS, PoS, HoR. The dungeon finder shows "You do not have the required gear for this instance" So if those kids are in there doing less than 1500 dps its lazy kids with good gear. I know cause I boot them like its my job.
Xenocidal16 Dec 30th 2009 5:28PM
@ bob
Resil no longer affects your crittability from mobs. only from players. so with 536 def and 15 resil you are still very much (though unlikely) crittable by a raid boss.
uncaringbear Dec 30th 2009 5:35PM
Is T10 going to be the final tier of armour before Cataclysm? If there will be no more tier gear, how likely is it that we'll see any new armour at ilevels higher than we can currently get in ICC?
