Around Azeroth: Totemic explosion
How many old-school Horde players used to use the "forest of totems" strategy on the trash packs in Blackwing Lair? Draenei shaman Vhaelor of <Deux Ex Machina> on Destromath missed out on this experience, being Alliance and all, so he decided to recreate it in the Stormwind castle. Unfortunately, Vhaelor himself couldn't see his mighty forest, so it was up to his friends to inform him of this bug. His pal Whitepaws snapped this photo and sent it in to us. Thanks, guys!
Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, Val'kyr on mounts, or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran. Older screenshots can be found here.

Mind equal blown and not just by the sheer number of totems.

I guess they program the articles to come out at a certain time of the day, people usually gets to see Around Azeroth early because it's shown on the right side of page before it is scheduled to appear.

I'm a Child of BC, so I'd like to know what this "forest of totems" strat is.
Also, awesome Screenshot.

Trash packs between the drakes in Blackwing Lair involved goblin technicians that throw bombs at the raid. Given the low health we had back then - concentrated bombing by the goblins can instant-gib none tanks.
The horde-only strat was to drop a forest of totems (BWL is usually ran with 4-6 shamans) at a designated location (usually around a corner).
hunter pulls the pack. then warriors would split the large drakonoids to be handled - while the goblins would be busy initially bombing the totems instead of players. (also helps keep the goblins in a tight area for Mage aoe.

Wow 34 shamans. Thats more then ive seen in game.

Sadly true. Easiest way to make a dead class is to make sure every damned role that class performs can be done equally or better by another class.

Can someone fill me in on the "forest of totems" strategy?
As an Alliance raider I never witnessed this at the time.
Jimson Jan 2nd 2010 12:30PM
He calls out certain classes (i.e. locks, pallies, warriors, etc.), and they do something to benefit him. Locks summon infernals that attack the raid, pallies BoP Nef, and so on. Shamans put down a bunch of "corrupted" totems, which buff Nef and hurt the raid. When you have alot of shamans around and he does a shaman call, totems are all over the place.

Nefarion does not equal trash.
Mechanic does not equal strategy.
GG.
Would also (still) like to know what this is. ;D

forest of totems involves the goblin technicians's bombs between drakes. (see my earlier comment)

Is this a variation of the BC 'de-synch' bug?
Back when pets had to be summoned from an item in your bags (ie. They weren't 'learned' or counted as character-tied spells), you could pull off an effect much like that totem forest. It required overstressing your connection to the server by making it send you a lot of data (eg. Flying into Shattrath) without actually disconnecting you. If done correctly, then the only NPCs and objects spawned would be where you just came from, leaving empty environments to walk around in for as many as 3 minutes. You could still cast all your spells as normal, but anything with a 'reverse' spell (eg. Dismissing a pet via their bag item) would not work as intended, meaning you could spam a pet item's cast, and instead of dismissing the pet your character would summon another one.
You'd see the pet-release animation, but the pet models wouldn't appear on your screen until you were synchronised to the server again. Anybody around you would see the growing army of non-combat pets. It was easy to perform and worth a day's ban if clearly abused (say, having 20 White Kittens constantly following you).
Shadowwind Jan 3rd 2010 11:13AM
Hmm, you wouldn't happen to have any screenshots of such a kitten army, would you?
Shindeiru Jan 4th 2010 1:17AM
I used to do something like this in shatt with eyes of the beast. you could take your pet far enough from you that when the spell released you would be de-synced. I would summon an army of non combat pets and have them following me around. Still have a few pics of it saved. if you want to see them let me know how i can get them to you.

Do you know where I can find a white kitten besides the auction hall?
Mainman Mar 14th 2010 11:38AM
It's quite rare, the White Kitten; it's sold exclusively by Lil' Timmy, a Stormwind NPC, and he has a stock of one for every time he's spawned. Horde characters can't buy it directly.
