Ah,
Winter Veil -- the sights, the sounds, the jingling bells from the
reindeer mounts, the curses emanating from players trying to tag the
Abominable Greench mob, and the massively inflated prices for
Small Eggs on the auction house. While this may not rank on the level of Great Auntie Marge's annual fruitcake for the family party,
WoW has its own set of holiday traditions -- some more respected than others -- and all of them were out in full force over Winter Veil. Moreover, this is only the second year that the achievement system has been active for the holiday, and lots of people are still putting time in on
What A Long, Strange Trip It's Been for both mains and alts. This year,
a new achievement popped up to take advantage of the 2009 Winter Veil gift (a genuine Red Rider Air Rifle!), although players seemed unenthusiastic about the rifle's inaccuracy and cast time.
So how did the holiday go for you? Did you finish the
Merrymaker meta if you still needed it? Were you suicidally foolish enough to go for
BB King? Did you
shoot your eye out, kid?

It went well enough. I didn't get it on all my characters because of other interests, but I did get it on my main so that I've only got Love Fool and Elder to get my Violet Drake! :D

The only thing I did this year was open the presents, and I was very dissapointed that there was no feat of strength! Didn't need to do anything as I got my Violet Proto Drake at Brewfest, good times.

Yes, me too, disappointed. I anticipated we may not get a xmas feat since they decided not to give us the brewfest stein feat this year. I thought it was fun to look at my feats and remember the holidays by them. But I guess that's over. A simple pleasure taken away.

Aye, I wish we had a toy as cool as the Clockwork Rocket Bot (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34425), my favourite companion in the game unfortunately my character I have it on is no longer my main... :(
Good times.

I got the Merrymaker, only started playing back in August, and went all out soloing the BB King, and dying like 10 times at least haha!

I was having a hard time finding snowflakes, so I figured why bother with BB King til I get that one done. I finally scored a second stack of snow flakes and found the much ellusive Dwarf Hunter, picked up the Let it Snow achievement... AND Merrymaker?
Yeah, BB King wasn't a requirement for Merrymaker, so I checked the BB Gun and noticed it doesn't expire and the BB King achievement says nothing about having to do the achievement during Winterfest, so WHY BOTHER?
I'm glad this happened, I was so dreading doing the BB King achievement.

I was drinking my Ovaltine.
kurtsiscel Jan 3rd 2010 8:17AM
More Ovaltine please!
Itanius Jan 3rd 2010 9:02AM
Be ... sure ... to ... drink ... your ... Ovaltine
Ovaltine? A crummy commercial? Son of a bitch!

I couldn't face the thought of having to enter an quit all those battlegrounds for the pvp achievement, so that's gone out the window. I just did the quests and some cooking.
Who needs a pink protodrake anyway.
:sob:

u didnt have to do BG for that achievement, u just had to transform into the gnome, and minutes before WG was about to start get on your mount and fly above one of the pillars in WG fortress so when it starts just stay there and BOOM before WG is over ( win or lose ) you get it done
Adeany Jan 3rd 2010 8:43AM
50 honorable kills is like two battlegrounds, unless its AV, in which case you only need to do one.
Psiwave Jan 3rd 2010 9:21AM
@ zalvi
where were you last week. I needed your words of wisdom damn you!
@ adeany
I was under the impression that your gnomosity was lost upon death, in which case it'd take me approxamately 100 battlegrounds to achieve. And to be honest that's 106 more than I'd like.
Coren Jan 3rd 2010 9:47AM
Your math is awesome! :)
Jhestor Jan 3rd 2010 10:41AM
WG was the best bet, but Arathi Basin is also a good choice: Sitting at Blacksmith puts you in range of almost all HKs in the battleground, so assuming your faction controls it you can finish the achievement in 2-3 good ABs.
trefpoid Jan 3rd 2010 11:41AM
dude, it was incredible simple. I just went to isle of conquest, grabbed a cannon and after 4 minutes of very safe shooting, I had 90HK. Dropped BG after and repeated with 3 alts. I'm a druid, so fighting was completely out of the question, 'cause I would lose my disguise when shapeshifting. Cannons were the answer :D
Sehvekah Jan 3rd 2010 5:12PM
@Zalvi24, That's exactly what I did. Just waited on a pillar in stealth while the keep got roflstomped. Easiest HK's ever. Wish I'd used that strat for getting Hallowed, but at least the G.N.E.R.D. buff was easily replaced.
Got no clue what the frak I'm gonna do for Children's Week though... God that's gonna be a nightmare.

My character's in-game daughter died because she transferred off the server. That puts a damper on Winter Veil and all future Winter Veils. And it kinda borked my achievement hunt, too. Can you get the achievements at other times of year if I hang onto my air rifle, for example, or must it be during Winter Veil itself?
Zalvi24 Jan 3rd 2010 8:42AM
not for that one
paradoxfactor Jan 3rd 2010 3:28PM
I assume you could hold onto the rifle til next Winter Veil and do it then. Yes it's a year away, but if you wanted to do it there is that option.
