The Queue: Fantastic!

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky be your host today.
So this weekend I started watching Dr. Who, the 2000's version of the series, thanks to two years of hearing about it from our Editor-in-Chief Liz Harper. There are parts of it that are really corney, and parts that are just amazingly good -- but that's the nature of most SciFi shows these days, and I can't stop watching it.
Plus, I now get the reference to The Ultrasonic Screwdriver.
Let's start off the first of this week's Queue with some pondering over Cataclysm itemization.
Fantastic!
Evaline asked...
"With Cataclysm adding only five new levels, will the rating required for crit/haste/hit/etc reach epic proportions? As I understand it, the expansion should be a gear reset, and with gear so powerful right now as a result of an extra tier they didn't really plan for, they would have to really crank up the rating needed for 1% haste/crit/hit so that people don't still have 40% crit and 20% haste (or something silly) at 85 in their T10 gear."
We don't know. We know that some stats, such as defense, are going away. What will happen to the other stats as a result of that is unknown. Blizzard has said some stuff about Cataclysm itemization, but we don't know nearly enough to begin talking about it with any real knowledge, and we certainly don't have enough to begin critiquing it.
We do have an extra tier of gear now, more or less, because of stat inflation -- particularly when it comes to tanks. Tanks reached the "I'm invincible" level way too early in Wrath. In BC, it took a tank fully geared through Illidan to feel like there were times he was invincible, and then he really only felt like it when he cleared Sunwell (and very few tanks go to that point, especially with regards to not needing any gear from SWP). Nowadays, you can get a tank geared up and roll through nearly all content just through the five-mans and iLevel 232 gear. The 251/264/277 gear from Icecrown Citadel really is overpowered in terms of tanking stats, which is why Icecrown Radiance exists. And of course, as the tank's gear increases, so must the other player's gear. It's a vicious cycle, one that Blizzard has, in my opinion (and in some of Ghostcrawler's comments), failed at in Wrath.
But will they fail at it in Cataclysm? My money is solidly on no, they won't. They are very smart people and know their own mistakes better than we do. I'm sure they're very well aware of gear inflation and itemization concerns, and won't let the stats run wildly out of control as we're seeing now.
The other thing to remember is that "epic proportions" is a very psychological term, if you will. Wrath gear feels epicly disproportionate compared to Vanilla WoW gear, but that's because we're so far ahead in terms of content and item level. But if you compare Wrath gear to gear that you'd get out of Sunwell, it's not that far off. No where near as big of a difference as Kara gear was compared to Old Naxx 40 gear.
Blizzard folks did say at BlizzCon (I think it was Ghostcrawler or one of his team) that ICC gear will be good enough for the introductory raids in Cataclysm, which is how things worked in the BC to Wrath transition as well. Sunwell gear was good enough for Naxx 25; the only piece of SWP gear I replaced from heroics was a stamina trinket. To me, you can infer that the 40%+ crit you get from gear now will drop down to 25% or so at 85, which is a nice number for introductory raids. Also remember that Blizzard can (and has) change the formulas for rating->result, so where you might expect it to take 100 crit rating to get 1% crit at 85 in today's formulas, Blizzard could easily modify it and add more to the piecewise function and make it so you need 150 crit rating to get 1% at 85.
Finally, I need to stress again, that even though we can analyze to death what has happened in previous expansions, we can't really be critical of Blizzard or even talk more than speculatively about Cataclysm yet. Until we start seeing gear from the beta, we just don't know.
Erthsahde asked...
"What do you think the chances are of getting someone from your own guild through the LFG tool? The other night two of my guildmates and I were grouped for some randoms, queued as party, and the healer we picked up... was our guild's main resto druid."
It's a pretty low chance. I average five to seven random heroics a day, and I've only gotten someone I know in them once. I think it really depends on how active your battlegroup is with the random dungeon finder, and then how big of a tank or healer shortage you have. You are, I'd say, more likely to have a tank or healer you know (or from your guild) based on their relative scarcity.

How does Blizzard choose or compose the music for each content patch and expansion? Do they plan which music they want as they plan an expansion and then add it with the patch when the time comes? Do they have people compose the music when they start developing each new content patch?

Before WoW.com I was a manager at a Symphony Orchestra, working with operations and personnel. I would *love* to know more about how their music works, but so far there hasn't been any opportunity to interview anyone about it. However it is very high up on my list of things to ask about one day, and if I ever get the opportunity, I'll write about it here.

Lol, I thought Adams' reply was sarcastic at first. I too would like to know much more about the music of the game. I play with the music on whenever I can. I know many people turn it off by default and they're missing out on a great deal of atmosphere. That would be like turning off the score of a movie.
There is one exception, though. What the freak is up with the music in Forge of Souls? The first time I heard it I thought someone was shoving some bizarre sounds through vent.

Its funky music to match the first boss, James Brown! If you listen closely, there is some actual structure to the music in FoS. Its just...funk.

I'd imagine that they have ideas, storyline, and bosses for a patch ready way before they start testing, and go ahead and turn over copies of concept art and storyline for the patch way in advance to give them time to compose music (and arrange it, don't forget that the instrumentation and color are arguably the most important part of the composition).
As a person who's going into music, I really think that Blizz puts out some high quality stuff, and really wish they would use an orchestra on more than the title screen piece. Their samples they use are top notch, but you can't compare what a computer is putting out and a live symphony orchestra.

I cant remember wich BLizzacast it was (it was in start like 1-5) but in one of them they talked about this. I think it was around 3.0 and they talked how they were doing/planning 2.4 music at start of expansion (bc)

If you have access to the WotLK Collector's Edition DVD, there is a great segment on there about the music of WoW. Just like making movies, the game designers use storyboards and concept art to evoke moods of specific locales and scenes. The Blizzard music staff (Russell Brower, Derek Duke, Glenn Stafford, and others) uses these images as inspiration to compose the music. They spoke specifically about the music of Howling Fjord and how they used the solo Ulan pipes to musically represent the feeling of traveling through the Scottish lowlands. Also, there is a great segment on "Arthas, My Son" and the talented boy soprano that was hired at the 11th hour to sing for it.

I used to play with the in-game music on all the time. As a musician, it made me really "get into" whatever content I was playing. Somewhere along the way I had to turn it off though, because I just couldn't hear the important stuff going through vent. This last week I realised I hadn't heard any of the ICC stuff yet coz I had it turned off. All I can say is O.M.G. The ICC tracks are AMAZING! Fully orchestral and choral scores with wonderful melodic lines... I'm so sad that I'm going to have to turn it off again so that I can hear the vent talk again :(

All i know is that the music is either well composed, or very well chosen.
Most of the great video games and movies have their own composed music for it. I mean go down the list here and tell me you DON'T know their songs: Mass Effect, Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, The Harry Potter series, James Bond 007 intro, Halo.
Music in entertainment can be very stirring, and Blizzard has always taken note on this. As a sound technician and designer, it like many other visual elements, can carry scenes or add a much broader depth to them. I think the Lord of the Rings: Two Towers specifically had one of the greatest musical scores for a movie ever imo. The way it captures and extenuates the scenes, its moving. And the great thing about big budget movies like that is that they can have their own music composed which is almost always x10 better.

I thought the same thing the other night in FoS. I frequently surf the internet while I play so I thought I had gone to a site with sound. I kept alt tabbing looking for it but finally realized it was just the instance.

Tom Baker is a GOD!
That is all.

Doing the LFG thing so many times on so many characters, I've only grouped with someone from my guild that wasn't in my group one time. So as others have said, probably a really low chance seeing as there are 7 or so other servers in the battlegroup. (Depending on battlegroup of course).

This man speaks the truth. Scarf vs. Dalek = Scarf wins.
Artificial Jan 4th 2010 4:31PM
Tom Baker used to be my favorite doctor, but David Tennant won me over as even better IMHO. That said, I'm not disagreeing. Tom Baker is a god, this cannot be denied, even if other divinities also exist. :)
Kakistocracy Jan 4th 2010 4:32PM
The Scarf (in it's various forms) was one of the best characters. I was a little disappointed the robot dog had a cameo in the current series and the scarf hasn't. Maybe the eleventh Doctor will bring it back.
lemur Jan 4th 2010 4:36PM
I've always been tempted to knit The Scarf, but the EPIC amounts of yarn and time spent knitting would kill my hands

David Tennant is still my favorite Doctor, and I know the reasons for his pacifism, but after watching all the old Doctor Who episodes I can't help but think that Tom Baker wouldn't get his butt whooped by the master and let humanity get enslaved for a year or so...

On the topic of Doctors, I saw this Queue was titled "Fantastic!", and expected a pic of Christopher Eccleston's 9th Doctor, since it was his catchphrase. I was disappointed to not see the 9th Doctor's face. :(
Anaughtybear Jan 4th 2010 5:34PM
Baker was the best Doctor, but his finest role is narrating Little Britain. Tee hee.
