Breakfast Topic: Missed Dungeon Opportunities

Reader Elstor, who sent us this question the other day, had some ideas himself, such as Oshu'Gun, the giant diamond mountain in the middle of Nagrand. It's honestly a good idea. Unfortunately, the Horde is the only faction who gets quests to head into the middle of the mountain and find out its true secret, as well as gain a valuable insight into the nature of the Naaru. Fleshing out Oshu'Gun as an instance would have provided some great lore insight into the Naaru (and maybe even the Horde) that the Alliance is sadly missing, and would even be an opportunity to further develop the split between the Kurenai and the Mag'har.
For my own part, I would still love to see a third Razorfen dungeon that would hint at all the possible connections and convolutions between the Grimtotem, the Quillboar, the Forsaken, and the Scourge as per this Thousand Needles quest. Alliance could even get in on it through, say, a letter dropped at a Grimtotem camp in Dustwallow. I was reminded the other day that Grimtotems do have that new skin, and I've always wanted them to take center stage more than they do. I continue to be convinced that Magatha is essentially the Horde's version of Lady Prestor. Plus, I'd love to see more background on the Quillboar and the desperation that drove them to ally with the Scourge as the Horde slaughtered them and took their land.
I'm sure there's tons of areas and quest lines that would feel a bit more epic with a nice 5-man instance attached to them. What are a few you might have wanted to see?

I feel winterspring is an area in need of a dungeon. It's so lonely there.
tyler.albl Jan 5th 2010 8:15AM
They sorta destroyed any real dungeon oppurtunity there by neutering the Blue Dragonflight...although I guess they could do like a Yeti Caverns or something....

There is a blocked off instance portal down in the southern part of Winterspring where the elite demons are located at. I have spent a bunch of time there lately gathering thorium and noticed it. Anyone know what that was originally intended for?

Mount Hyjal is south of Winterspring...
and really, if you're at appropriate level, the whole bottom part of Winterspring is virtually an outdoor group instance (kind of like the troll city in Arathi Highlands used to be)
Dharmabhum Jan 5th 2010 9:45AM
@Heath: I'm guessing you probably meant the Hinterlands rather than Arathi. Because Jintha'alor rocked my Vanilla days like no other part of the world.

If you notice, that instance portal is green. It's the entrance to Mount Hyjal.

As large as Stranglethorn Vale is, I always wondered why there wasn't a 5-man there. I understand the connection with Deadmines, but something level-specific there would have been nice.

I've always wanted a troll instance in STV to go with ZG
(Yes it is I who sent in the breakfast topic)

Grim Batol. That zone was always a mistery when I played for the Alliance back then four years ago. A lot of skull lvl mobs, the first dragonkin creatures you might find... But, they never implemented it, not even a quest that I'm aware of.
Another one could be in Stromgarde.
Gadai Jan 5th 2010 8:25AM
Given the lore in the Richard Karnakk books I wouldn't be particularly surprised to see a Grim Batol instance in Cataclysm.
Merus Jan 5th 2010 8:27AM
Grim Batol is confirmed as an instance in Cataclysm - in the lore, it's where the Black Dragonflight has been locked away.
I agree that Moonglade could use a 5-man, perhaps the prison Illidan escaped from in WC3. The Syndicate seem underdeveloped, and I'd love to see us storm their base at some point.
loop_not_defined Jan 5th 2010 8:35AM
Grim Batol will be implemented during Cataclysm. :)

Crap....should've refreshed before responding.

I thought they were gonna do another outdoor pvp area with grim batol. Or was that some other area? i'm not sure
Ruslan Jan 5th 2010 6:40PM
Actually, Grim Batol is where the Red Dragonflight is currently hiding, If I'm not terribly mistaken.
GrooveNeedle Jan 5th 2010 8:09PM
The outdoor PvP area for Cataclysm is an island called Tol Barad. It is part of the island nation of Kul Tiras and resides in the bay between Wetlands and Hillsbrad.

theres three places i knew of back in the lvl 60 days that had closed instance looks ....where the red elite dragonkin in the wetlands are there is a tower or castle maybe they had plans there also stormwind has one thats gated off havent looked lately to see if its still there and if i remeber correctly northern hintherlands where the elite dragons are there was another but may be that was just a world boss cant quite remeber since i havent been up there in awhile either but id like to see more low lvl content like duskwallow marsh getting something or even lakeshire or duskwood
Matt Jan 5th 2010 8:22AM
SOMETHING in Moonglade! That entire zone has a lot of promise and needs more content
spiderpk Jan 5th 2010 8:53AM
Wetlands elites = Grim Batol area
Hinterlands elites = World Boss (Dragons of Nightmare)
SW = who knows?
As far as possible dungeon opportunites, Azhshara always felt like it needed an instance. The first time I wandered there it felt so epic with the ruins and elites walking around - then I realized how barren the zone actually is. Reading about the background lore really makes me wish there was an instance and more quests there.
Also, flesh out Timbermaw Hold please - like the Greymane wall it was so epic walking up to the front gate...and then I realized it was just scenery.
I know they're redoing it in Cataclsym as a starting zone, but still...I'd rather have seen the existing zone get more fleshed out.
Drakkenfyre Jan 5th 2010 9:16AM
That gated area in SW?
