The Queue: Why are warriors so awesome?

Today has to have some special significance. If you take the month and the year and add them together and subtract 2000 you get the day. The day. It's like, the world is going to end or something, and it isn't even 2012!
Oh well, here are the last questions I'll ever answer in The Queue, because it's the end of the world as we know it (which happens to be today's reading music).
Rhornez asked...
"Why are warriors so awesome?"
Okay, obviously this is a troll comment or otherwise just a question to get people mad about their classes, but I do want to take a minute to address why I feel there are some classes which fit more into the natural archetypes of RPGs than others; and this isn't to say that a less natural class (such as a death knight) is any more or less useful than a more natural class (such as a mage).
The way I see it there are three primary roles which are mainly filled by three primary classes. In the healer role, we have the priest -- the benevolent cleric who casts their holy spells on allies, healing them back to full strength. In the tank / physical DPS role we have the stoic warrior -- standing toe-to-toe against the evils of the world. And finally in the caster / magic user role we have the mage -- holding back in the group slinging arcane mysticism at enemies.
These archetypes are present in every game, from early D&D up through the latest RPG. There are now, obviously, many iterations and permutations of these classes, but the basic facts of each of them are little different than they were in the original D&D. In WoW, paladins are a cross between priests and warriors, shamans are a cross between all three, and rogues are... well, they're just like warriors without the tanking abilities. (And don't argue about rogues tanking stuff, it's not an intended part of their kit.)
I think this discussion is interesting and helps people overall understand the game and associated game mechanics better (which is why I'm including it in The Queue). If you know what identifies a generally warrior-based class or mob, you can quickly come up with instant strategies to deal with them. This becomes particularly relevant during leveling in a new expansion where snap decisions and analysis on mob strategy can be the different between success and death. Understanding the overall archetypes, and how they can counter each other, will only help improve your game.
Healem asked...
"What happened to the 'report lag' feature that was supposed to be coming?"
If you click on the red question mark in your action bars, you'll see a button to report lag. It's in the same area you go to get in touch with a GM.
Velzak asked...
"Any word on if Patches of Yesteryear is coming back ever?"
A draft is written, I'm fact checking it, and we'll post it later this week.

rac? Is that the Recruit-a-Compadre program?
Kurash Jan 11th 2010 3:14PM
"Do you think blizzard will buff rac before cataclysm for people to be able level new Alta to level 70 very quickly in preparation for cataclysm?"
Maybe it stands for Recruit a Comrade. It's communist, oh noes! ;)

Yes, those who achieve the Gladiator title are recruited to teach "Advanced Pillar-Humping" to the resurrected KGB.

What gear are the Argent Tourney champions wearing? Specifically what is that sweet ass bow the Troll is holding? As a troll hunter I'm absolutely in love with it, please tell me it's an actual obtainable gear model.

As a troll hunter, you should totally run ZA a bunch just to get the sick gear for RP purposes.

Not sure if this has been asked yet but when the new WoW:CAT hits what will end up happening to the ILVL score of items? Will it just carry forward (not sure what ilvl we are at yet what 271 or 279?) and the next set of gear starts at 280 or + or does all of our gear revert down to 187 and lower epics?
James Jan 11th 2010 2:29PM
Probably the same thing as tbc and wrath. If you were decked out in best epics you didn't upgrade for a while in the new content.
Darthregis Jan 11th 2010 2:43PM
I'll probably keep going. Just like the tiers. I'm pretty excited for my T13 gloves.
Niallus Jan 11th 2010 10:24PM
I originally thought it would be the same as BC and Wrath as well, BUT with patch 3.3, the ease of gaining t9, i honestly think the "cataclysm greens" will be on par (or as close as possible with the new stats system) to T9-9.5 level items.
What with it being the new standard, as it were. First few places will be of t9/slightly lower level, then we'll be seeing upgrades from level 81 onwards.
tatsumasa Jan 11th 2010 5:52PM
"does all of our gear revert down to 187 and lower epics?" what in the hell could possibly make you think that would happen? has anything even remotely close to that ever happened in the history of wow?

Can you bring back to "Write a Caption for this Photo" contest that you used to run every week? I miss reading other people's submissions, and I even won a shirt out of it!

A few noob questions that have been bothering me for the best part of three years:
1) in PvP what are the honor kill ranks that appear above your head when you make a kill? Are higher ranks worth more honor? How do I know what rank an enemy sees when they kill me (I play a lock... this happens a lot(!))?
2) Putting money in the bank. Any point other than to resist the temptation to spend it? I assume you don't accrue interest or anything...
3) Ditto for the Auction House. There seems to be an option to add money to it... what's the point in this? I'm saving up for a Mechano-hog and don't want to risk my hard earned coppers on experimentation...
Thanks!
James Jan 11th 2010 2:35PM
As to your first question it has to do with the old pvp ranks. You used to have to grind week after week for pvp rank. You could not use the specific pvp gear without having attained the pvp rank. they removed ranks at some point but people still kept their ranks. Think of it as a denotor for older accounts if it is anything other than private.
Eddy Jan 11th 2010 4:29PM
You can't put money in the bank. The only bank you can put money into is the guild bank, and that is only for the purpose of sharing the money between the guild (for repairs, for example, or to save up as a group to get more tabs.)
Vladeon Jan 12th 2010 2:03AM
you can't add money to the auction house... not sure what you're seeing. Also, there's no interest accrued through putting money in the guild bank, though that's an interesting idea and I'd be all for it.

What's the purpose of even having Battlegroups anymore? If all players were in one big pool, rather than separated into their battlegroups, wouldn't it be easier to find players using the random dungeon feature, and wouldn't battlegrounds start much faster?
slartibart Jan 11th 2010 2:35PM
battlegroups are "server clusters" and for several supposed networking reasons...
(mostly a guess as much of Blizz's net info is trade secret)
The realms in a battleground are generally in an identical physical location.
Drakkenfyre Jan 11th 2010 4:13PM
Considering some of the Battlegroups are thousands of miles apart, that wouldn't work very well.
There are 4 datacenters in the US.

Kinda funny. I just starting playing my warrior again. He was my first toon ever, my first 60, and my first 70. Sadly, he was not my first 80. Nor second, third, fourth, etc. Looks to be my ninth. Sad, on many levels. Honestly, I just really got sick of stance dancing. Now that I've starting playing him again, I'm leveling at prot, and with Warbringer, seems like you rarely, if ever need to switch out of Defensive stance, so I'm really liking it again. So I'm going to answer the original question, and say its Warbringer that makes the Warrior awesome. Too bad its going to get nerfed in PvP.

Why do people justify a ninja when the item is worth tons of gold, but then get all bent out of shape when they're the victim of that ninja?
