Time Is Money: Putting your emblems to work

If you're like me, you have a lot of excess emblems sitting around. Maybe you never got around to spending them before the next tier came out, or maybe the badge gear just never quite compared to your raid drops. Whatever the case, there is no sense letting them go to waste when you could put them to work and earn some gold!
First, here is a quick breakdown of the current badge system, from most recent and difficult to acquire on down:
- Emblem of Frost: These can be acquired primarily by raiding Icecrown, completing the Raid Boss Per Week "weekly," or by completing one WotLK heroic dungeon per day using the Random tool.
- Emblem of Triumph: Most raids now drop these badges, as well as heroics. You will also be awarded these for doing any number of WotLK heroic dungeons past your first one per day using the Random tool. You will also get some by completing your first normal WotLK dungeon per day using the Random tool, as well as completing the Raid Boss Per Week "weekly." Also of note: If you get Heroic Oculus using the random tool, don't drop group! Not only has it been nerfed like crazy, but when you defeat the end boss, every player will receive a loot bag that will contain these badges and more, plus a chance at getting the super rare Reigns of the Blue Drake, which used to be available only by killing Malygos, who now drops his 25-man version (Azure) in both 10 and 25-man.
- Emblem of Conquest: Originally, these were acquired by running 10-man Coliseum, or 25-man Ulduar.
- Emblem of Valor: Originally these dropped from Ulduar 10-man and Naxxramas 25-man.
- Emblem of Heroism: These were among the first WotLK badges, and dropped from Naxxramas 10-man and heroic dungeons.
You can downgrade your emblems on a 1:1 ratio. So, if you had one Frost, you could downgrade it to a Triumph. If you chose, you could then downgrade that to Conquest, and so on. This is handy if you happen to get a couple of emblems from a higher tier, and you know that because you don't normally get the chance to acquire them, it would take you too long to save up enough to buy anything. Unfortunately, you can't upgrade your emblems.
Tip: Check out our guide to making gold with the new Random Dungeon Tool, since you should be using it to collect emblems!
Now that you've had a quick crash-course in emblems, let's look at some ways that you can use them to make some gold.
Primordial Saronite: 23 Frost Emblems
If you do not currently raid Icecrown, you will have enough emblems to purchase 1 Primordial Saronite in 12 days of doing only one heroic dungeon per day using the Random tool. Wowhead estimates that each one is typically bought out on the Auction House at 2600g; that's not bad for 12 days worth of work! Considering many heroics can be done in under 30 minutes, even someone who can't devote a lot of time to playing can manage this, especially if you queue as a tank or healer.
If you do raid Icecrown, you will have access to Primordial Saronite much more quickly, although you may need to devote some of those emblems to gearing up instead.
As a point of comparison, these tend to sell on my server from 2200 to about 2500g each.
Crusader Orb: 15 Emblems of Triumph
Wowhead estimates that these are bought out on the Auction House for about 125g each. Considering how easy it is to farm these now, you should have easy access to an abundant and renewable supply of Triumph Emblems.
As a point of interest, on my server, Crusader Orbs currently sell for about 250g.
Runed Orb: 18 Emblems of Conquest
You may not want to downgrade your badges in order to pick this up. It will cost more badges than the Crusader Orb, and may be worth less on many servers. However, if you happen to have a stash, why not blow it on these? Wowhead estimates an Auction Buyout price of 150g each. On my server, as a comparison, they sell for about 175-195g each.
By looking only at the Wowhead estimates, one would conclude that Runed Orbs actually sell better, although it is worth noting that both essentially sell for 8g 33s 33c per emblem. It is also important to note that on my server, as an example, the Runed Orbs really do sell for significantly less - 50+ gold less! Do note that this will vary by server for many reasons, and if your Crusader Orb market is saturated, you might make more money selling these.
Epic Gems: 20 Emblems of Heroism for the primary colors, and 10 Emblems of Heroism for the secondary colors
Red, blue and yellow gems will give you pure stats, and so they tend to be worth more. In this case, they are worth twice as many badges as their mix-it-up counterparts!
Red gems (currently, Cardinal Ruby) tend to sell for the most. However, this is a well-known fact, which makes it vulnerable to market saturation. If too many people are trying to make coin with this color, your best bet may actually be to choose another.
In order to figure out the best deal, watch the prices of the epic gems and make a list of the prices each seem to sell for on your server. Then, divide by 20 for primary colors and 10 for secondary colors. The number you get will show you how much gold you are getting per emblem. This should help you decide what to buy!

hmmm, i thought that the 10-mans still dropped the current tier emblems. maybe except for Naxx-10...
dfgreat1 Jan 11th 2010 5:09PM
lol, that was kinda unclear of me. At the time of the release I think that the 10-mans dropped the current emblems. ( ToC-10 = Emblem of Triumph during 3.2)

In 3.0 and 3.1, 10 man raids were a tier behind in terms of badges, though a few specific cases dropped 25 man badges (which led to me wondering what I'd do with a single Emblem of Conquest after doing Flame Levi with one tower). Then, in 3.2 when they moved all the Heroics, Naxx, and Ulduar 10 up to Conquest badges, they made 10 man raids drop the same tier badge as 25.

Yeah. Coliseum 10 never dropped Conquest emblems - only Triumph. I read that and I was very, very confused. Regardless of what happened in 3.0 and 3.1, by the time 3.2 came around Triumph was dropping from Coliseum 10.

Nice guide but forgetting stone keeper shards!
If you don't pvp and have lots of stone keeper shards, visit WG when your faction owns it. Turn your stone keeper shard in for honor then visit the NPC in stormwind to exchange the honor for epic gems. The exchange rate isn't that generous but if you have no use for the shards...put them to better use!

Also, 20 shards = 1 Kharma's Grace epic Resilience gem which can be sold on the AH.

I agree with all the above. Honor farming; either through stone keeper shards or BGs/WG and buying gems in the PvP quarters in SW is much better than using Emblems for gems.
All the epic gems in SW sell for 10k honor.
Normally, I use my emblems to buy the secondary ones (for myself) and my honor to buy the primary colored gems (red usually sells for the most on my server).

"Emblem of Conquest: Originally, these were acquired by running 10-man Coliseum, or 25-man Ulduar."
Actually, they were never obtainable in 10-man ToC.
orlochavez Jan 11th 2010 7:36PM
Emblems of Conquest were obtainable from 25man Ulduar and from hard modes in 10man Ulduar (and Emalon in VoA).
Emblems of Triumph were obtainable in both 10man and 25man Trial of the Crusader (and Onyxia and Koralon in VoA).

First thing I noticed when skimming the article too, I see quite a few people caught that

As a rule of thumb, if you're looking for saving some "coin", buy secondary colored gems using emblems and primary colored gems using honor. (assuming you're not spending it on any pvp gear or what-not.)
10,000 honor (which is roughly a half of what you get doing the weeklies in WG) gets you a gem of any color, and as for emblems it's mentioned in the article.
Axolotl Jan 12th 2010 5:18AM
Actually you can get 3 epic gems with honor from wintergrasp alone each week.
Do all 5 quests on tuesday and do them again on saturday or sunday when they're available again.
At level 80 that's over 30K honor per week, do your daily battleground aswell and you may push it up for an extra epic gem.

One reason for Runed Orbs to be high-priced is crafted items with Ulduar recipes.
People (like me) might have guessed ICC items/recipes would be superior in all catergories than ToC and Ulduar gears. But in fact, there are a few Ulduar items, such as Belt of the Titans, are still BiS even in ICC days!
Slightly (well, may be slightly more than 'Slightly') regretting not having stacked up Runed Orbs when they were trashed...
Cephas Jan 11th 2010 6:41PM
How could you possibly think that a 226 belt would still be BiS? I don't think Blizzard could possibly be itemizing so poorly that an Ulduar belt was still BiS two tiers later. In fact, the Bloodbath Girdle/Belt (from Heroic Jaraxxus) outperforms the Belt of the Titans in literally every possible way. http://www.wowhead.com/?compare=45550;47429;47002

You forgot venture coins :P

Any money-making uses for the old stuff? Badges of Justice and whatnot?
Kuro Jan 11th 2010 6:44PM
Buy BC-era epic gems and vendor for 5g or cut them if JC and vend for 6g. Or try your luck at the AH.
Mshanehorn Jan 11th 2010 6:42PM
The bracers you buy with valor or conquest ( can not remember which) are also BoE, I do not know their relative AH value though.

Valor

I'd also add Stone Keeper's Shards to this overview. 150 shards > 10K honor > 1 raw epic gem, any color.
