I knew before I read this that the list would include Death Grip.
I apologize on behalf of the DK community for the large chunk of idiots that don't understand how to properly use this ability.
I will almost never use DG in an instance, unless I'm the tank, or the tank specifically asks me to DG something.
A big reason to not use Death Grip, is that we have another useful tool at our disposal that works even better: Strangulate. That caster that won't mosey over? Strangulate. It's silenced, and will likely run through the tank's AoE to get to whoever it has aggro on. Plus, it does no damage, so it causes little threat. Death Grip includes the "forces the target to attack you for 3 seconds." 1 minute CD sucks, but it's quite useful.

Yeah, personally I'm glad that I'm part of that 1% (i think at least). Got told something similar a night or two ago, guy thanked me for not DGing everything nearby just cause its cool looking.
Boss is patrolling closer and closer, tank pulled but there's a couple of casters standing back? Strangled one and DGed the other while I was right next to the tank for him to pick up.
Mob running after healer or just running away towards his friends? DG.
other times, nope, don't use it.
The issue in general with DK is the look of their attacks. Nothing screams badass like summoning a whole "army" to destroy whatever is in front of you. Nothing beats awesome like force-choking some poor sap right over to you. They have too many uniquely styled abilities, plain and simple =P

Strangulate is my first, "Please come back to the tank" ability for casters. But I will still DG a mob back to the tank if it's a) being stubborn or b) running off to thwack on the clothies.
I know I am not in a 5man as a tank. I also know that I am well enough geared that I can take a few more hits than a clothie while the tank picks the mob up. The trick is that as soon as I DG a mob, I switch off of it so I am not continuing to build threat and competing with the tank.

Oh, there's no doubt that there's valid times for a dps to use DG.
I simply don't use it much because even when I use it in perfectly valid situations (i.e. saving a healer's ass) I get yelled at by noob tanks.
Yeah, they exist, and are out in force. I see so freaking many posts on the forums from tanks lamenting stupid and bad dps. Well, here's some news for you: it comes from both sides. I've had several bad tanks in my heroic runs. Not as many as I've had bad dps, but the ratio is 1:3 so there should be more bad dps.
But it always seems like tanks think they can do no wrong and all dps just sucks and is facerollingly stupid.

I quickly learned how unwise it is to have frost nova used in a dungeon. I even thought of taking out the talent for shattered barrier. Then I found out that some tanks actually liked Shattered Barrier. If a frost nova hit, they knew I was in trouble. I was always undetermined on that ability.
However, I do remember a death knight using Death Grip just to pull a caster over next to me. Then he continues to pound on the guy. Then he dies. Then he starts swearing up and down and blames me for not taunting the caster off him.
Excuse me Mr. Death Knight. I did taunt the guy 3 seconds before you used Death Grip and then I had to taunt the other caster off of the healer. Oh and if I did taunt after that, you probably built enough aggro to get the guy pounding right back onto you again. I TOTALLY forgot about Strangulate. I guess he did too. We never did finish that dungeon.

I DPS with my DK, and I've actually gotten comments about my use of Death Grip. Specifically, "Wow . . . a DK who uses it intelligently? Good show." I only use it if there's an add sitting outside the range and the tank can't get him over. Sometimes strangulate won't cut it, since the silence is so short.
My only problem using Death Grip is the premise of the article: Tanks are control freaks. I can't disagree, my main is a tankadin. Sometimes I'll try to pull that stray mob over to the group so the tank can get him, only to do it simultaneously with the tank dragging the mob over to where the stray used to be. It's a toss-up.

Talented and skilled DK's are ....like gold plated rocking horse shit on my server.
DK's who know when to use strangulate/DG when not tanking are as rare as finding a snowball, in a larva stream.
You, sir, knowing how to use a DK i would welcome into my group. Normally i groan and (if tank) /w to him, Do NOT use army ok?

"1 minute CD sucks, but it's quite useful."
It's 2 minutes. Which is why I DG casters to the tank while Strangulate is on CD, given a tank I can trust to pick up the add.
If I'm worried about my health, I'll DG the caster to the tank, then instantly stun (via ghoul). By the time the stun wears off, tank will have threat and all is good with the world. If my health is high enough I'll just DG and let the caster hit me for 3 seconds, it's no big deal.

What I think people don't understand about DG is that it's not a taunt. It's a range mocking blow (with a "grip" of course). Which means you pull the guy over and you don't attack him and guess what, he resets his aggro to what it was before the Death Grip.
This means that as long as you stop attacking it and don't pull something that hits really hard, there shouldn't be a problem for the DK (though it might still annoy the tank).
