MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively
Sometimes you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all those other shiny MMOs! Check out this roundup of the latest news from the wider MMO world.
| Rumor: Blizzard's next MMO to be an MMOFPS Yep, another MMO rumor for you guys about the Blizzard's next title. While Blizzard has been very adamant in saying that their next MMO would be very different from World of Warcraft, there might be more difference here than just the game's setting. |
|
| CES 2010: LEGO Universe unveils trailer full of zombie pirate awesome As if the idea behind the LEGO Universe MMO wasn't already pretty awesome in our books, this shiny new trailer straight from the CES floor has cranked up the previous levels of awesome to 11. In the new launch trailer we're treated to zombie pirates, ninjas, characters building race cars in bullet-time, rockets, and all manner of other cool-looking LEGO craziness. |
|
| Funcom threatening to delete noob Age of Conan characters When it comes to character deletions, just about every MMO out there has a clause in their Terms of Service that indicates they have the right to delete your characters at any time and for no reason whatsoever. With that said, there are very few companies that choose to exercise that right. |
| An interview with Allods Online: CBT4 and beyond Allods Online has certainly gained some interest in the last few months since their closed beta began. Even if you've never played the game, you can't help but drool over the screenshots and videos we've been posting. |
|
| A quick Star Trek Online PvP interview with Jack Emmert We recently had the opportunity to ask Cryptic's Jack Emmert a few questions regarding Star Trek Online and its PvP elements. With the looming open beta (tomorrow!) and similarly imminent February 2nd launch, we consider ourselves lucky to get some fairly definitive answers on topics like the game's Cryptic Store and the Klingon faction's future -- including if deeper customization is in the wings or not. |
|
| Would you buy a magazine dedicated to your MMO? Both EVE Online and World of Warcraft now offer a high quality official magazine to anyone interested. Is this going to become a trend? Sure, you could argue that World of Warcraft's immense subscriber base supports such a venture, but what about the considerably smaller (although no less dedicated) EVE Online base? That game has seemingly started this whole business of MMO magazines and EON is still around and kicking. |
|
| Socializing is dead. Isn't it? Well actually, that's a tough one. Certainly, the perception that socialization is becoming a lesser factor to more and more developers has become the norm among most people. That doesn't necessarily mean they're correct. So, let's examine the general landscape of yesteryear and beyond to see what's really going on when it comes to human interaction in our massively multiplayer online games. |
|
| Star Trek Online pre-orders topping Direct2Drive sales Some people may be apprehensive about the speed with which Cryptic is rolling out Star Trek Online, but that isn't slowing down the pre-orders at all. It seems that the majority of fans remain anxious to get their hands on the game. For the week of December 27th - January 2nd, pre-orders of the Star Trek Online Digital Deluxe edition took the number one spot for sales at Direct2Drive. Pre-orders of the regular edition of STO made a showing as well, coming in at number ten. |

So... many players abandoned their AoC accounts after initial 1 month expired, and Funcom threatens to delete their characters unless they pay?
Am I the only one who sees very big flaw in Funcom's logic?
ecwfrk Jan 12th 2010 12:21PM
Funcom never had any grasp of logic. Their inability to make sound decisions was blatantly apparent with all the horrendous mistakes they made with Anarchy Online.
Seems like little has changed.

To obtain the [Red 2x4] block, you must journey out into the sands of the Harrowed Desert. There you must pluck the mystical [Blue Flower] accessory and bring it to the Great Pyramid. As a sacrifice with this [Blue Flower] you must offer three [Shrunken Heads], five [Horse]s and the [Millennium Falcon Set].
Do this and you will obtain the [Red 2x4] block.

I lol'd

If that's what it takes, then by God i'll do it!
Seriously though, the trailer for the Lego Universe MMO looked really fun. Nostalgia came rolling in when I watched it. Ahh...Lego.

LOL @ Funcon "pruning" their databases of 1-20 characters on expires accounts. AoC was fun for the first 20 lvls or so, their end game severely sucks, so I guess I wont shed any tears losing the 2 toons I haven't played in a year.
* GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE*
Age of Conan will be way of the dodo bird by end of the year.

Parallel to launching an MMOFPS, Blizzard could make WoW into an mmoRPG, with branching quests letting players make moral decisions, with dialogue options when talking to NPCs, NPCs reacting differently to you depending on your previous actions, &c.
Wishful thinking...
Raze Jan 12th 2010 10:09AM
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
That is all.
Tridus Jan 12th 2010 9:45AM
You know, reading about AoC's suckitude and Failcom never gets old. I wonder where those "AoC will destroy WoW" people are now? Probably still hiding for fear of being laughed at.

despite how awesome a lego MMO would be, lego games tend to be far too kid oriented for my taste. i might give it a shot anyways

I was one of the many who wasted their money on Age of Conan when the game came out. I played it for maybe 8 levels, and got bored of it, and haven't touched it since.
Can't wait to pick up my beta code for Star Trek online today though *giggles like a Japanese school girl*

Why hasn't Wow.com jumped on that rumor about the next Blizzard MMO yet?

I'm confused by your comment.
a) WoW.com is about world of warcraft, their secret MMO isn't.
b) You have just replied to the article that has the exact same link you just gave.
Help us out here. What do you want them to do? They're forwarded the information from Massively, which contains what you claim needs to be here.
Robert Jan 12th 2010 4:25PM
World of Warcraft = Simpsons
Blizzard's next-gen, futuristic MMO = Futurama
Wonk Jan 12th 2010 2:23PM
I bought Age of Conan collectors edition, I put many hours in to this game... it was terrible.
They offered me all kinds of stuff to return, but no amount of bribery could get me back to the Age of Boredom and suffer through another level. Now they threaten to remove my toons to get me to return... of course it won't work, who Ever thought it would?!
Also, after reading though the comments on the story listed here I was kinda shocked at the screw you comments from current players, have they become such FunCom defenders that they miss the point... the game is failing, the games owners are trying to squeeze all they can from this dog before it dies. Run!
FunCom failed... they failed to provide a quality product upon release, failed to add the promised content until all who paid got angry and left.
I'm done with Fail.
Lars Petersson Jan 12th 2010 5:32PM
Well, at least now I won't even be remotely tempted to see how badly AoC sucks these days...
Clever move by Failcom...
