Rumor: Sam Raimi's next project is the Warcraft movie

If AICN's sources are correct and Raimi is going to be working on the Warcraft movie next, this is great news for the movie. While it is probably still a few years away from release, the fact that he's focusing on it now is a good indication the project is moving forward in the right direction.
AICN points out that with the success of Avatar the time is ripe for creating immersive virtual worlds, and you'd be hard pressed to find a more immersive world than Warcraft. Although lets all hope that the Warcraft movie doesn't become a cheap rip off of Avatar -- but with Raimi at the helm it's likely in safe hands.

"The Spider-Man movie series is going to undergo a reboot (yes, already) with entirely new cast and crew"
Best part of the article!

I'm hijacking the front page.
I found this on http://www.comingsoon.net
"Last July, Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures announced that Sam Raimi had signed on to direct a movie based on the award-winning Warcraft universe.
"At its core, 'Warcraft' is a fantastic, action-packed story. I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen," Raimi said then.
In October, Raimi also revealed that Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot screenwriter Robert Rodat was writing the script for Warcraft.
Raimi was expected to develop the game adaptation while he was shooting Spider-Man 4. Of course, last Monday Sony made the big announcement that the "Spider-Man" franchise was going to be rebooted in 2012, leaving fans wondering if he would turn his attention fully to the Warcraft movie instead.
iF Magazine got a chance to talk to Warcraft producer and Raimi's partner, Robert Tapert, who said the helmer hasn't made a decision yet.
"It's in development," Tapert said. "We're in the outline/story/script phase."
"I don't want to speak on Sam's behalf, because the 'Spider-Man' thing happened so recently," added Tapert. "I think he's getting his feet under him and trying to decide. He might want to do a teeny, tiny small film, but I don't know what he wants to do. I know he had a great time doing 'Drag Me to Hell.'""

@pretentiouslatinname: I was about to write the same thing. He has nice movies on his resumee, but he also has awful ones. It's a 50-50 chance that he make a good warcraft movie or screw it up completely.
Btw, he already appears as the Producer of Warcraft in IMDB http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000600/

I'm still unclear as to whether this will be live action, cgi, mocap or (my guess) a mix of all. Anyone have any insight on this?

They are going to make it into a musical with The Muppets.

Think Avatar.
c_tedeschi Jan 12th 2010 1:25PM
I think Avatar thought Warcraft...it sure felt like that in many spots. I heard JC was a fan anyway, so I wouldn't be surprised...
Aldarion Jan 12th 2010 1:59PM
Nay, Avatar was - at least story-wise - a rip-off off Pocahontas (just think about it, you'll see). But yeah, those blue boys and girls sure have a touch of Draenei in them... Sans cranial plates or whatever.

nah, not spacegoat.
Imo the aliens in Avatar were much closer to Night Elves, thats not just looks thats also philosophy, outlook, and the scene where the heroine was riding that tiger-lizard thing.

I can see it already. A young misbegotten squire is magically transformed into a wild and feral orc to learn their ways and make way for the conquering human nations. But this transformed human/orc falls under the sway of the noble yet savage orcs and through perseverance and courage makes a name for himself as Dances with Worgs. Dances with Worgs heroism wins the heart of the fierce and wild princess Fiona and together they rally the orcs to fight off the humans and preserve their lands and sacred shamanistic ways.

"together they rally the orcs to fight off the humans and preserve their lands and sacred shamanistic ways"
THEIR lands?? The orcs aren't even from this planet! This land belongs to any other member of the horde over orcs, c'mon.
I don't HATE the Horde, but I favor the Alliance, so whether it's alliance-centered or both is fine. If it does indeed become Horde-centered, I would be a bit more pessimistic towards it.

a few blizzcons ago, they announced it would be a live-action film and that it would not be an epic tale like LoTR, but that they are aiming for it to be borderline rated R and a war movie

Not to fuel speculation, etc., but does anyone find it coincidental that Elisha Dushku suddenly plays WoW? My prediction: She will play the Undead queen.
snowleopard233 Jan 12th 2010 12:11PM
She’s actually auditioning for the role of questgiver #5. Industrial Light and Magic are working round the clock to create a truly stunning and realistic question mark to go over her head. The exclamation mark will be played by Bruce Campbell in a yellow suit.
Alan Falcon Jan 12th 2010 12:28PM
I think Ms. Dushku no longer has a job after Dollhouse was canceled, and Felicia Day got to her on that last day of filming with her Blizzard Brown Nose(tm).
