The Queue: Now or later
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.
It's been awhile since I've done listening music for The Queue. It's a lot of fun to do, but we do it so often here on WoW.com that it's starting to get a little stale. I've started to miss doing it though, so here you go. Today's listening music is some fantastic Rhett and Link, who you probably have never heard on the radio. Which is a shame.
YimmyZ asked...
"Is there any lore related to Emblems/badges? Something like the people need so many badges to draw magic from to imbue items or some such?"
There isn't really lore behind emblems at all, but if you needed to justify it, I'd use what Eddy suggested in yesterday's comments. Before the Kirin Tor (or the Ashen Verdict or whoever else) will give you your sweet epics, you need to prove that you've been contributing to the cause. Do your fair share of the work, they'll let you pick out something good.
Many asked...
"If Blizzard is considering mandatory authenticators, should I wait to buy mine in case they give them out for free?"
No, absolutely not. It's only something they're considering. It might happen tomorrow (probably not), but it may never happen. If you're trying to decide between now or later when it comes to an authenticator, go with now.
Buf asked...
"What's the purpose of even having battlegroups anymore? If all players were in one big pool, rather than separated into their battlegroups, wouldn't it be easier to find players using the random dungeon feature, and wouldn't battlegrounds start much faster?"
The battlegroups are largely identical to the physical server clusters, and thus it takes little to no time for those servers to communicate with each other. For example, I'm on the Whirlwind battlegroup. Whirlwind is located in Seattle. The only other battlegroup in Seattle is Emberstorm. They can communicate with each other almost instantly, but if you threw Stormstrike from Boston into the mix, game performance would suffer.
The reason these clusters are split up in the first place is to allow players to pick servers closer to their physical location. Someone living in New York City would benefit greatly from picking a server in Boston rather than a server in Seattle. Being in the Midwest, I probably would be better off playing on a server in the Dallas datacenter(s), but we picked a west coast cluster for some reason. Probably because we didn't actually understand the difference at the time.
If all of the servers were in one location, they could much more easily give us one big pool of players to pull from, but that would cause performance to suffer in other areas.
Lorendi asked...
"Are the Cataclysm zones going to be designed so that a newly formed level 80 can hop right into the new areas and start leveling to 85? because I'm debating weather to use this time to level another character to 80 (and try to be done before cataclysm comes out) or max out my current characters and do end game content."
As far as we know, yes. That's how previous expansions have been done, and we have no reason to believe Cataclysm will be any different. In fact, it's very likely that the Cataclysm starting zones will be doable as early as level 78 or 79.
calaf asked...
"Why are there are no good tanking heirlooms? Seems like that would improve the number of tanks in the game."
You know, I wish I knew the answer to this question. I suppose it's assumed that nobody is really going to tank their way to level 80, but with the addition of the dungeon finder, I would really appreciate it. I feel bad tanking in heirloom Valor on my warrior when, in theory, I could be wearing tank pieces instead. I would pick up tanking heirlooms in an instant.

I think the whole emblem thing started with the argent dawn, because in apparent lore the undead carried scourgestones to communicate/show rank and you would give these in to prove that you've been killing them. It just evolved into the BC and WotLK emblems from there somehow i think.

I tanked my way to 80...
...it was awesome.

I know the feeling.

I have a Pally I am leveling by tank: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Aman'Thul&n=Starrlightt
And some PVP as well
But in the Random dungeons, it seems at this level no one even waits for the tank, they all just rush in and kill as much as they can before they die.
Over and over I see this.

i wish ther was a heirloom tanking shield, cause all the shield from 1- mid 40 look like crap
Ramco Jan 12th 2010 4:29PM
This, I wish I knew the pleasure of tanking on my warrior before 58.
But seriously, the shoulders and chest are fine, but what they should really add are weapons, shields, guns and trinkets. I mean, we've got two rogue swords, two dps ranged weapons, no shields and healer/dps trinkets. Why all the tank hate? (*coughQuel'Delar*cough*Kirin'Tor Ring*cough*)

Prot warrior from level 20, it was great fun. And with a Lock right there with me every level, things died...a lot.
Sleutel Jan 12th 2010 4:41PM
Same here. I even did it back when it was still a huge pain to level as Prot--nowadays, Prot specs are so strong for leveling, that there's no reason people wouldn't pick them as often as DPS specs.

The heirloom items give you lots of stam which is what you really need to tank those low level dungeons anymore.
That said, a tanking shield (and spell shield and offhand frill) would be a great addition.
pinkysan Jan 12th 2010 5:26PM
just use the PVP heirloom items for tanking which tends to have more stamina than the PVE heirlooms items. The only thing you would really care about tanking before max level is stamina and crit immunity. Resilience scales better for crit immunity anyways.
And my understanding is that you don't really need to be fully def cap and all that for leveling instances since they are tuned to let people with 1/2 tanking gear tank though it instead of proper tanks.

My lvl 66 alt is specced Protadin. I find it fun to grab a group of 5 or 6 mobs at a time and let them hack away while i pick them off one by one. :)

My wife levelled a prot warrior, with me levelling a holy pally. Everything took forever to kill, but we could take on 5 things at once, and do quests that were 5-man and several levels higher than us. It was nice to see the end of some of those ridiculous quest chains and actually be able to do them (like Azshara and Blasted Lands). Tons of fun.
vazhkatsi Jan 12th 2010 11:19PM
use pvp stuffheirlooms, the resilience will help make you crit immune and the extra stam is nice as well. of course i do know that it lacks tanking stats.

I'm currently healing my alt up. I started playing the char again when 3.3 came out, and I went from 59 to 68 without ever setting foot in outlands. I just hung out in the cities pretty much exclusivly and did random dungeon after random dungeon.

I have tanked to 80 pally & dk; and warrior to 71 already.

What is a Pork Rind, why would someone cover it in chocolate and sell it on amazon and more importantly, why would you eat it?

Aside from that, I have no idea. Maybe you have a crush on that one doctor at the cardiac catheterization clinc?

Only ONE? Why stop at one? Why not the whole institute?
