Man imprisoned on fraud and theft charges over account selling scam

While defrauding people and taking their money isn't anything new, getting busted over it while selling WoW accounts is. From what we understand, the arrest is not for the actual trading and selling of accounts, but for the fraud that went on in the process. The fraud in this case is a criminal matter with very real implications for Mr. Bouffard, whereas the buying and selling of WoW accounts is against the agreed upon Terms of Service, but not against any criminal code.
We've been hearing a lot about misbehaving WoWers lately, from the cougar who ran off with a fifteen year old boy, to Blizzard helping international authorities track fugitives online. This appears to be just the latest in a string of cases for Jack "Hang 'em High" McCoy to lay some law and order down on.

Errr.. privacy?

People who commit crimes, get convicted and are imprisoned don't generally have the right to keep it a secret. There are news stories about convicted criminals all the time.
Unclescar Jan 13th 2010 9:49AM
See now that he's been charged? They can post anything they like.
Until that point, they can't say squat.
Frizzle Jan 13th 2010 9:50AM
I didn't read anywhere he was found guilty though.

When you are officially charged with a criminal offense you no longer have a right to keep your identity private, unless a judge says otherwise.
Juneau Jan 13th 2010 10:17AM
Adam's right, identity is only usually protected when it comes to minors.
Barinthos Jan 13th 2010 10:25AM
Why the hell do people bitch about privacy all the time when a game is involved?? Get a clue people, criminal = no privacy.
Hooch Jan 13th 2010 10:26AM
Yeah frizzle, he's not been found guilty...oh wait, didn't the first header say "IMPRISONED"?
Rhino Jan 13th 2010 11:22AM
It never ceases to amaze me. Things that happen all the time in the real world bleed over into wow and there are clueless masses who get up in arms about "civil rights".
Frizzle, you say "privacy?" I say "Freedom of the press?". If you read the original article, it says the man is facing fraud charges. He is. It's fact. It's public record. Do you scream "privacy" when an alleged child molester's mugshot is put up on the 11 o'clock news?

Hooch, you do realise they hold people in jail pending trial, right?
Hampster Jan 13th 2010 2:41PM
Imagine in an alternate world this man is completely innocent and his identity, arrest, photos, name, all personal information, his existence is completely withheld from the public. It sounds like a police state to me.

He needs to group with a tank and healer or dps an elite the first day.
