We took notice of this in
an earlier edition of the Queue, but I thought this little bit of news merited its own article for the benefit of lore junkies, raid leaders, or anyone who just might have missed it. After being asked a question over where Angrathar was really located in the larger Icecrown raid complex, I flew out to no-man's-land of southern Icecrown/northwestern Dragonblight and tried to get a good handle on the architecture. While doing so, I noticed a new and extremely tall spire nestled in the mountain range past the Wrath Gate and flew over to investigate. At the top of a saronite spire is huge chunk of misty ice capped by a flat surface with a black design vaguely reminiscent of
the one on the Lordaeron throne room (although for all I know this is entirely unintended). From above, it bears
a startling resemblance to an image datamined by Boubouille some time ago that was guessed to be the location of the eventual fight with the Lich King -- and I think this exterior "set" could be quite useful for any raid attempting to work on positioning once details of the fight become known. Curiously enough, the Throne itself doesn't appear to be present in-game at the moment, but that might change soon.

I know this is off topic but I really need to find a good PST server to transfer to, can anyone suggest a good realm? If you can that would be awesome!!!

Aerie peak...alliance. And look for the guild Dual Core or Training Wheels.
Hëx Jan 14th 2010 8:22PM
Looks to me like it's definitely a non-instanced version of the outdoor location; much like several of the other outdoor boss encounters have empty versions you can visit without entering the instance. Can someone link to the original mmo-champion article where the data mined picture came from? I'd like to see any others in the series.

OK found it: http://www.mmo-champion.com/news-2/icecrown-citadel-the-lich-king/
Warning Major spoilers for the Lich King fight in the linked article.

Also off-topic (sorry!), but is anyone else who's accessing i.wow.com getting pushed to www.wow.com when you click on an article today? Makes it very difficult to read, sadly!

Yea it's doing that to me on my iPhone. It's pain but you can replace the http://www with an i
:-)

This sounds pretty cool, but I have no idea from your article how to go in-game and see what you're seeing. Is this something that we can do in game?
Viper007Bond Jan 14th 2010 8:41PM
Fly up.
Alexsha Jan 14th 2010 8:42PM
Just fly up to the top of the central tower.

Fly over the Wrath Gate from Dragonblight heading toward Icecrown. As you cross the mountains there, you'll see a giant spire. At that point, head for it then fly directly up. :)
Suzaku Jan 14th 2010 10:20PM
Or you can just fly up to the peak of Icecrown Citadel. It's at the top of the central tower, easily visible from the outside if you have your view distance high enough. Should be easy enough to find, what with the clouds parting around it and all.

Yeah, the directions are really, really confusing to the point of just being bad directions.
Go to the battering ram outside of the ICC raid entrance. Get on your flying mount, face the raid portal (do NOT go towards it), and just hold spacebar for two minutes. You'll see the huge block of ice at the top eventually.
It is the Frozen Throne; ICC was built around the Frozen Throne. Anyways, it wasn't there before 3.3, I've explored that area thoroughly trying to figure out why there wasn't the slightest indication that TFT was there, and trying to get a sense of how the future raid would play out. Another useless bit of trivia, they extended the top of ICC to go above the flight ceiling. You used to be able to park yourself at the top of the black spikes.
Now, what's really stupid... If you look around the outside of ICC in Northrend (Icecrown/Crystalsong/Wintergrasp/etc), you'll see Northrend. You can see this Northrend at the end of Halls of Reflection, and if your view distance is all the way up you can even see where this fake world ends and how there is no Dalaran even though it would be there. When you're inside ICC, though? None of Northrend (as we know it) is there. The staircase going down from the citadel into the Court of Bones? Not there, and that's what the loading screen artwork depicts! Apparently the ICC raid is a magical, non-existant land where the only thing in the world is a snow-covered mountainous bowl. Really breaks the immersion, I think.
i2hellfire Jan 15th 2010 9:20AM
yes, god forbid they neglect to include the entirety of ice crown in the instanced portion to appease dipshits like you who would complain about anything.
Kaz Jan 14th 2010 8:30PM
Yeah that large saronite spire is the casing for the Frozen Throne spire that Arthas walked up to merge with Ner'zhul. From what I understand ICC was redesigned to put more emphasis on the central spire, and to allow the Frozen Throne set to be placed. Now if they would actually put the unresonably cold chair iteslf there it would look right.
Ohhh Idea: What if they had an unkillable Lich King mob sitting on the throne and if some one agrroed he would put a 5min debuff on them that turned them into a ghoul? That would be awesome.
Ringo Flinthammer Jan 14th 2010 9:03PM
Anything that would encourage a non-stop flood of people to harass Arthas would be something Blizzard is definitely not inclined to do. If he deathtouched everyone who aggroed him, with automatic resurrection sickness, THAT is more in keeping with what an always-available Lich King would be like.
Suzaku Jan 14th 2010 10:20PM
They could have him sitting there on the throne with Remorseless Winter AoE up at all times (a small, localized blizzard swirling around him). That way you could look, but if you get too close you'll be killed.
They could maybe have Sindragosa patrolling the skies over the Citadel, too.
reswab Jan 14th 2010 10:25PM
or better yet, if the threw you off the tower so you plummeted to your death. Has anyone noticed how The citadel is now the tallest known building in WoW? It dwarfs the Storm peak's point. How about that for an E-peen competition??
Koskun Jan 14th 2010 8:37PM
If you are talking about the spire with the pictured area on it, that isn't a new spire, that is the top of Icecrown Citadel.
I really do not intend for this to come off as snobbish here, but it is rather difficult to tell what you are talking about through the bad sentence structure, bad punctuation, and run-on sentences.
Reinard Jan 14th 2010 8:59PM
On top of the fact that this has been old news for a looong time now.
gillster92 Jan 14th 2010 9:02PM
Ya this is old news, was posted on this website I think when 3.3 first came out.
