WoW Rookie: Leveling a paladin tank

Want to level your paladin as a tank? You got it! Before the Dungeon Finder tool was launched in December, finding level-appropriate instance groups was well nigh impossible. Occasional knots of newborn death knights might putter about in a favorite Burning Crusade instance to scoop up some gear. The rest of the pre-Northrend instances remained ghost towns, populated only by speed-running level 80s who were farming or running low-level buddies through some quick levels. But the Dungeon Finder has re-invigorated the instances of Azeroth, Outland and beyond. What does that mean for leveling players? If you love to play in groups and instances or if you're looking ahead to raiding and want to lay down your skill base now, you can.
If you plan to spend most of your time running quests solo or with only a few other players, a Retribution (DPS) spec still makes more sense. "How many times do you really have to kill 20 mobs?" rhetorically asks Adam Holisky in a recent The Queue. "In the old world, sure, it happens enough -- but you can't really get into the meaty prot paladin points at that point, anyway. Most newer quests these days require you to kill one or two mobs in close proximity to each other and then go over and find another few mobs to kill. You rarely can pull entire areas and be effective with your AoE to the point of having an advantage over being retribution."
But if it's tanking you want -- and instances you want it in -- you're in luck. Protection is the spec you want, and our special series from Gregg Reece's The Light and How to Swing It shows you how.

Nice.
Now if we could get one for DKs and warriors too we'd be all set.
Nick Jan 14th 2010 11:50AM
This implies there is one for Druids. I'm gonna try finding it, I could sure use some help.
I just finished Deadmines as a bear and had to put up with a ninja looting, mob pulling mage (he got kicked) a brand new player in the guise of a ret paladin, wearing a sheild, using Righteous Fury and a hunter (replaced the mage) who's pet was growling and he'd pull packs too. They had to put up with a tank that didn't know the instance at all. Only the Priest DPS (/wave to Silico if she reads this) and the Druid healer (/wave to, crap forgot your name) were what i'd call "good" players.
I like to think I have an acceptable knowledge of tanking, my main is a paladin tank, but I was struggling to keep agro with such a mix of issues in the group.
I'd like to point out that the paladin did take things on board he removed RF and told us he'd look to get a 2 hander for dpsing in the future. I wish all new players were as willing to learn as he was!

Get glyph of maul as quick as you can and use maul every time you can. Between that and swipe when you get it and you'll have no problems. If you are having issues with single target threat i would say use FF feral every time you can, once you get mangle flop between FFF and mangle while always using maul whenever you can....it is a threat gen machine. Don't forget that a tank's job is to lessen the amount of dmg they take so use barkskin whenever you can to ease up the amount of beatings you take, and keep demo roar up if you can.

Ugh... yes please... low level warrior tanks make me shudder... and DK's... how about just a straight stat introduction for them??
Nick Jan 14th 2010 1:04PM
Thanks for those tips, i got the glyph before going it certainly helps, and when levelling with my friend I can generally hold mobs on me so it's maybe just the fact they are elite mobs, or trying to keep 3 dps on the same mob. Barkskin and FF will help me, I should get them soon enough I'd imagine.

To the bear tank above. While I know that Rage is still slightly hard to come by, this macro will change your life.
#showtooltip
/cast Swipe (bear)(Rank *)
/cast !Maul
* = your current Swipe Rank.
This macro will constantly queue Maul for you as you swipe, which is honestly a godsend. I would have quit tanking a loooong time ago if I hadn't found this macro.
Clydtsdk-Rivendare Jan 14th 2010 3:47PM
You don't need to add a rank to the macro...

Mal,
The DK guide has already been written here: http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f14/59900-comprehensive-guide-death-knight-tanking.html
I'm level 66 and have been querying this as a bible of sorts :D Daniel recently did a great tanking article for DK's here: http://www.wow.com/2010/01/12/lichborne-a-death-knight-primer-for-tanking-5-man-dungeons/
Ramco Jan 14th 2010 11:05AM
Very nice to see that you listen to the comments which said those guides were more for WoW Rookie.
And they're helpful, too! (not that I plan on leveling a paladin tank anytime soon, warrior ftw :))

I've been leveling a Disc Priest for the past few weeks and I noticed that the majority of tanks I end up healing are Paladins. I find it quite odd, but considering I've been leveling a Prot Pally since before 3.2, I can see why. And with the Dungeon Finder, it's mighty awesome to level as a tank/healer...almost instant dungeons at times.
Unfortunately, the last two tanks I've had were less-than-great...taking a rez sickness...a REZ SICKNESS...oy.
nekorion Jan 14th 2010 12:40PM
Well in general I've found that tanks like to not lose aggro. Thunderclap, Swipe and Death and Decay aren't quite the threat sticky paper consecration tends to be.
WoWie Zowie Jan 14th 2010 11:34AM
still waiting for the how to guide on mage tanking, or "manking" if you will
Samuel Reese Jan 14th 2010 12:07PM
Now I've got a new way to describe Warlock Tanking! :D
butterbear Jan 14th 2010 1:19PM
I LOL'd.
wrendil Jan 14th 2010 11:42AM
I didn't read all the guides, but if it doesn't say something about Seal of Command its wrong. With the new seal of command, you can basically pick up a nice hghend DPS weapon and cleave your way to 80. We SoComm tank trash all the time in heroics and raids, it is simply faster than waiting on 5 stacks of vengance, and you don't get that at low levels.
So for a low pally, get SoComm asap! And then get down that prot tree!
PeeWee Jan 14th 2010 12:00PM
Picking up SoComm also means you'll get Holy Shield, Avenger's Shield, Reckoning and all other important tank talents 11 levels later.
Not worth it.
wrendil Jan 14th 2010 12:10PM
I think the speed increase from PoJ is well worth it to go for first. Movement speed increased adds up over 80 levels. So for me its 13 points, but I'd still take it. If your looking for speed in leveling that is.
Tolkfan Jan 14th 2010 12:30PM
I'm going to be subtle here...
------------------------------------------
RETRIBUTION IS BETTER FOR LOW LEVEL TANKING!
------------------------------------------
(note: you still tank with a shield and 1hander, don't be that guy who thinks he can tank SM Cathedral with an heirloom arcanite reaper)
Protection becomes viable only when you get Spiritual Attunement (healing->mana), BoS and Holy Shield. And that happens somewhere around level 45. Before that, protection will go oom every other pull. I'm leveling two alts through 20-60 instances right now and I see it all the time: pull -> pull -> MB, repeat.
Retribution on the other hand has (at a very low level):
- Seal of Command, which is a free, 3 target cleave that deals holy damage (threat!).
- Glyph of Seal of Command gives you 8% total mana (base and total mana are the same for Ret, don't gear for int) at every Judgement
- Improved Judgements - more judgements = more mana (see above)
- Benediction reduces mana cost for almost every tanking ability you'll be using by 10%
- upgraded Retribution Aura damage - YES! YOU SHOULD BE USING RET AURA WHILE TANKING! Free, reflective holy damage that generates threat? Yes please, MOAR! Even level 80 tanks don't understand this and insist on using Devotion Aura all the time, even on trash
- Best of all... you can switch back to your trusted 2H weapon while not tanking and do some questing, without being gimped by your tanking spec
Vaeku Jan 14th 2010 3:07PM
The thing with tanks using Devotion Aura, is that since it's in the Protection tree, they think they should use it. And it makes sense. Why would you use a retribution talent when you're tanking, not DPSing? But at lower levels, when you don't have all your skills yet, I'm sure Ret Aura is good. But at higher levels, I would think Devotion Aura would be better.
But I don't have a pally (yet) so I wouldn't know.
wrendil Jan 14th 2010 4:01PM
Well it is OK to actually change your aura based on what you are doing. Boss fights with no adds Devo is prolly better than ret, even improved. Armor isn't that great against magic, we all know that, so if its loads of frost, or fire damage...then switch it!
But yeah, Tolkfan basically said what I was trying to say. Prot talents are fun, but you need lots of points to make them work. And just because you have all your points in ret, don't be afraid to get behind a shield.
