This. I admit I don't always remember- I have the same problem on my mage. But if I'm in WG or a BG or occasional places like the ones mentioned above, i will put my pet on aggressive just for the extra-quick attacking (that I don't have to make them do). Just.. gotta remember to toggle it back to defensive or passive (your preference in heroics honestly) before I get going.
