Breakfast Topic: Is it time to update WoW character models yet?

Of course, other MMOs are usually the purvey of our sister blog, Massively, but in this case, something caught our eye in a recent report on the making of Lego Universe by the Denver Westword News: The article claims that the number of 3-dimensional surfaces on a single 16-stud Lego Universe brick is twice as many as found on your average World of Warcraft character.
At first glimpse, that number seems a bit confusing. How could a simple Lego brick be that complicated? Of course, it gets a bit easier to understand when you consider a few issues: First, we have to admit that a Lego brick is a lot more complicated than it first appears. Not only do you have each individual stud, but there's the tubes on the undercarriage that allow it to snap onto other bricks. That's a good amount of surfaces.
Of course, the other issue is that World of Warcraft's graphics are 5 years old, and weren't top end even then. Now, I don't want to outright say they're sub-par or primitive. In fact, just today as I was fooling around on my long neglected level 70 hunter, I was marveling once again at the incredible scenery and architecture in Howling Fjord and the amazing Vykrul models. That said, the graphics are showing their age, and this nowhere more apparent than the character models. Only yesterday was I treating my guild to another rant on how Human Males who are not Arthas or Kalecgos (in his half-elf form, which looks mostly human) look like shaved gorillas. And certainly, I'm not the only member of the WoW.com team who'd like a few face lifts.
Of course, the somewhat low-tech look of the PC models has its advantages too. If nothing else, WoW's not-exactly-Crysis level graphics give it a wider audience. Even if you're the type of person who doesn't upgrade their computer more than once every 5-10 years (and there's more of them out there than some of you might think), you can still play WoW. Still, I can't help but think when I look at my poor snub nosed Human death knight that he really deserves to look every bit as pretty as Kalec.
So the question remains: Should Blizzard keep the low level old PC graphics so they can focus on new art and keep system requirements low for their customers? Or is the fact that they're being beat out by a bunch of a bricks a good benchmark for a graphics upgrade? Then again, perhaps they should split the difference and just license some Warcraft Legos, which could then inevitably show up in Lego Universe.

Please god yes I would even upgrade my shitty computer if they introduced new character models. I still remember back in Everquest days I quit for a few months then they added the choice of being able to choose whether you wanted the newer models or the older models. I came back instantly. Blizzard needs to take notice to this idea that was implemented and done 8yrs ago. They wouldn't have to worry about losing a huge portion of their subscribers since if they want to keep the current models rather than upgrade their computer they'd have the choice, but for those who wish for newer models and have new computers or upgrade/customize their computers will simply be able to check off which races/all races model upgrades in the interface option or visual. I really see no flaw in this method other than blizzard/activision having to spend some money to implement it. Plus what greather time to do this than the release of Cataclysm? The whole world is getting renewed and upgraded graphics wise, why not the characters?
I swear I'd do anything to change the trolls to make them look less than sticks omg armor models suck for trolls, been a raiding troll hunter since 1.10 and I cant stand it! lol.
RISE UP MY BROTHERS DEMAND IT!!!!!!!

YES
Graphics is one of the top few reasons why i can't get my FPS playing friends to give WoW a try. :(

Then you have some amazingly shallow friends. Yet we're better off without them--would you want to Pug with someone who's only there to see the pretty colors?

My bones are sticking through my armor, my jaw is missing, and my feet are...UGH! Please update them as soon as possible!
Markus Laumann Jan 19th 2010 8:31AM
Damn straight. And let us wear pants instead of that cut off jean-looking crap.
John Jan 19th 2010 11:59AM
And a cape that can cover my spine. What's up with that?
Makes sense that the lv 1 starter gear looks like that, but every pair of boots has to have the toes cut off?
Ted Jan 19th 2010 1:39PM
Look, Mr. Willis, this may come as a shock to you...but those aren't problems with your graphics. You...you're dead. Actually undead, but you get my drift.

And I can't stand to make a char that has long hair male or female due to the fact that all shields and some 2h swords stick through the hair and just makes it look so weird. update so hair is behind all other items shouldn't be hard
Artificial Jan 19th 2010 5:19PM
@Ted: Sylvanas is dead too, but she manages to keep all her bones covered up...
Ricohardt Jan 19th 2010 5:24PM
Agreed. All this gear looks brand new on everyone else, why is plate ripped?
Plus the undamaged models exist, the Chinese game doesn't allow exposed bone. Give us their undead models.

The problem with focusing on making the world look "fresh" and "new" is that it won't matter how good the scenery is if your character looks terrible. You have to even things out. I'm not going to go buy a car because it's my favorite color and the exact model I want but has been keyed from one bumper to the next.
As for PC requirements. I'm running WoW on a five year old computer and I only lag in Dalaran. Most people upgrade after a while and with us returning to our major cities the lag will be to a minimum if any compared to Dalaran.
The character models are an eye sore when put into the beautiful scenery in WoW.

Another counterpoint to the argument of PC requirements limiting the audience is the high level of customization available in the video settings; you can pick and choose whether spell detail or view distance is more important to you and set levels of rendering within the capabilities of your computer. Unless I'm missing something, I fail to see why the same system couldn't be applied to character models...
Then again, if it means that creating armor models is more difficult or time consuming and results in fewer variations than the already slim pickings, then I'll stick with what we've got. My shaman is sick of looking like a huntard just because I got a shoulder or helm drop that's better than my tier piece... :P

The thing is that you could always make the character model updates an optional graphical feature. Just like weather and spell effects, people could revert back to the old models if their computers couldn't handle the new ones.
Shinji Jan 19th 2010 8:07AM
Considering that you can see pixel tearing and such on the moonkin model, yes
Jabbaprime Jan 19th 2010 8:08AM
Please yes and give more character customization options
Realmreaver Jan 19th 2010 8:13AM
I think any race that does not use the same number of polygons as the newer races needs the upgrade period.
snowleopard233 Jan 19th 2010 9:31AM
At least bring them up to the TBC race’s standards. Whenever I switch from my Draenei to my Night Elf, it becomes glaringly apparent that one was designed with more primitive technology. Tauren are probably the most obvious in terms of resolution, given how covered in hair they are. Put a Tauren up to a Taunka sometime and you’ll see how far fur texturing has come in the last five years. I don’t need all these races to look they were created by Industrial Light and Magic, but our own characters, the lead players and protagonists of the story, should at least be visually on par with the most advanced graphics in the game.
Solanum Jan 19th 2010 12:07PM
I was going to say the same thing about Tauren. I was looking at my friend the other day like, "You're very...blurry."
