Breakfast Topic: Is it time to update WoW character models yet?

Of course, other MMOs are usually the purvey of our sister blog, Massively, but in this case, something caught our eye in a recent report on the making of Lego Universe by the Denver Westword News: The article claims that the number of 3-dimensional surfaces on a single 16-stud Lego Universe brick is twice as many as found on your average World of Warcraft character.
At first glimpse, that number seems a bit confusing. How could a simple Lego brick be that complicated? Of course, it gets a bit easier to understand when you consider a few issues: First, we have to admit that a Lego brick is a lot more complicated than it first appears. Not only do you have each individual stud, but there's the tubes on the undercarriage that allow it to snap onto other bricks. That's a good amount of surfaces.
Of course, the other issue is that World of Warcraft's graphics are 5 years old, and weren't top end even then. Now, I don't want to outright say they're sub-par or primitive. In fact, just today as I was fooling around on my long neglected level 70 hunter, I was marveling once again at the incredible scenery and architecture in Howling Fjord and the amazing Vykrul models. That said, the graphics are showing their age, and this nowhere more apparent than the character models. Only yesterday was I treating my guild to another rant on how Human Males who are not Arthas or Kalecgos (in his half-elf form, which looks mostly human) look like shaved gorillas. And certainly, I'm not the only member of the WoW.com team who'd like a few face lifts.
Of course, the somewhat low-tech look of the PC models has its advantages too. If nothing else, WoW's not-exactly-Crysis level graphics give it a wider audience. Even if you're the type of person who doesn't upgrade their computer more than once every 5-10 years (and there's more of them out there than some of you might think), you can still play WoW. Still, I can't help but think when I look at my poor snub nosed Human death knight that he really deserves to look every bit as pretty as Kalec.
So the question remains: Should Blizzard keep the low level old PC graphics so they can focus on new art and keep system requirements low for their customers? Or is the fact that they're being beat out by a bunch of a bricks a good benchmark for a graphics upgrade? Then again, perhaps they should split the difference and just license some Warcraft Legos, which could then inevitably show up in Lego Universe.

Velina, commas would be great but can you imagine all the people named '''''''''' or q'q'q'q etc.

I would like to see an upgrade in the poly count of vanilla models to at least TBC quality while retaining the same artistic style as currently employed. My dwarf male can still look fundamentally the same while having a cleaner graphic display. Some people mention some of the heroes that got updated and perhaps are not to some peoples tastes. That is all due to the artists vision and the approval from whoever gives it.
Some people have mentioned things like more facial options and various body styles. I am no expert in how the engine is laid out but more textures and various per race scaling options per worn item seem to be aspects that would involve an exceptional amount of time to produce as oppose to just fixing faces, hands and feet.
No one mentioned player options of coloring armor at all in the post so far. This of all the things to do with changing the graphics would be the relatively the easiest artistically to do most likely. It is perhaps just a matter of using the default armor template with various color options when creating the art files associated with said armor. This of all things would go a long way in appeasing players need for customization without the need of adding to the graphical overhead associated with other systems. It would provide an across the board anti-Bozo the Clown armor solution. Take for example the T10 armor which comes in 3 flavors but could in essence have been done in any number of color combos. The item ID for each color is most like linked to the given art files. This system could be implemented via a dropped/purchasable dye system that just swaps the color of the specific armor to the requested one. Someone start working on that one or hire some just out of school grad for peanuts to do it with the added benefit of padding the old resume.
The thing that gets me is that Blizzard goes for what are usually some of the most demanding graphical upgrades. Take for example dynamic shadows ( http://www.wow.com/2008/07/21/my-shadow-is-following-me ) which is one of the most demanding processes for the end user. Due to how the overall engine works, even top of the line users must use lower shadow settings for normal play to be tolerable. Water will see an upgrade in Cataclysm and advances for that in mmorpgs have been done since going back to Dark Age of Camelot. Even after this fact, it is just another selling point that perhaps falls short of its given intention for the masses.
I hope Blizzard proves me wrong with water. Even on a core i7 system, shadows are the first thing I turned all the way down because of the graphic engine as a whole. These methods go with their stance of moving forward without looking back. On the other hand it goes against the stance of doing things for the masses. This could be due to the fact that perhaps they just refuse to do anything with the old code. Maybe it is possibly sloppy and/or badly optimized which I can't blame them since the number of lines of code is just a nightmare to work with depending on how well they implemented it in the first place. If the code works, within whatever is accepted tolerance, at the end of the day they might just choose to not bother with it.
I could go on about a bunch of other things but I will leave it at that.

what?

Was thinking that new combat and activity animations might help keep the game fresh too. Our toons have been making the same attack moves and spell casts since level 1.

It would be very bad business for Blizzard to willfully eliminate some of their customer base by pumping up the graphics.
That having been said, yes: Character models do need some work. Some need a little smoothing and polish (Human females, male Trolls) others need to be torn down to the wireframe (Human males, Orc females. Ugh.)
But I don't think it's worth a massive change in system requirements. And mind you, I'm on a pretty fast machine, so it wouldn't affect me either way.

Dalaran runs like crap enough as it is.

Agreed.
I was in the HoR a few days ago, crammed into the corner trying to avoid being incinerated during the magical barrage, and got a framerate of about 1 per second. I kid you not. And yet my framerate is amazingly smooth in every other instance.

I didn't read where anyone mentioned that you can already update your character model to Wrath polygon count in the graphics settings. It's a box you can check.
transparent Jan 19th 2010 6:45PM
Because it doesn't, that merely allows for a higher poly count on armor and the like, not the character model themselves.
SamLowry Jan 20th 2010 6:53AM
Remember in the early days of Wrath when each new piece of gear looked amazingly great, but every other piece of BC gear you were still wearing looked fuzzy and rather awful...well, more awful than usual?
So there was some sort of upgrade but it wasn't retroactive, and it definitely showed.
Brent Jan 20th 2010 10:28AM
What about the slider where you can up the polycount on your character? It seemed like my character took on a pretty sharp look when I adjusted this to high, but maybe it's just because I got a new computer?
I am having a hard time being gung ho about the conversation, I think the graphics look pretty great! Like being in a giant cookoo clock.

I'd love to see a model update /but/ I'd like warning of a good six months of what kind of comp I'll need to handle it and frankly I'd rather have that warning come with some kind of tester thing that I could run and see how well each of my comp's would do with it... my notebooks prolly 2 years old and desktop 3 years old currently. Neither were top of the line when I got them by any means. Though I wouldn't mind updating one as needed I'd only want to if I truly had to and I'd like to see properly ahead of time if I really need to.
As it is I know it's been said they'll be using something new to do the water and I'm hoping that has no effect on my notebooks performance (that's what runs wow better for me not the desktop as it is).
rkaliski Jan 20th 2010 1:35AM
Frankly, I hardly look at my toon. Unless you are a screenshot junkie I bet most of us do not. Yes you look at the toons runing around but you don't look in detail. Its like you don't notice blurred things in a motion picture until you freeze a frame and oh boy is the pic crappy.
Let's work on server reliability, lessen lag and get make sure there are no more "door bosses"
Half your raid shouldn't disconnect when killing whelps in Ony's room.

If the new tesselation features in DX11 would allow Blizzard to not have to actually re-do any art, but have it all automatically scaled up, I would consider buying a new vcard. The character models need updated badly and it needs to default to whatever your system can handle. Then you can choose old or new in the menu.
Vanya Jan 20th 2010 2:31AM
I really think that blizz has the money to make it, well they HAVE the money to make it, I just dont know why they dont.
So im going to think that they are updating the models for the expansion.. its like a blind faith thing, they are going to do it, I just know... papa can you hear me?
BlackTiger™ Jan 20th 2010 4:03AM
All I have to say - do not change models is wrong (asian) way.
Examples of bad models are - AoC, LOTRO, AION, PW, LA etc.
Bodies in that games are incredibly vertically stretched, disproportional, too skinny, doing movements wrongly. "Customizable" you say? Wrong. Even after hours of customizations you will never receive proportional body. Their biggest mistake is to make everything very "humanish" in combination with cheap (like everything asian) "body modelling engine".

A lot of you seem to not understand that the style of the graphics are based on the Sons of the Storm's art work.
I think they should update the vanilla models to match the quality you see in the Burning Crusade and Wrath models, but some of you asking for photo real and mass effect quality models are missing the theme here.
Wow has a great design sense and very specific style, it's themed around simple bold iconic shapes and silhouettes, a sort of visual haiku.
It's going to look more and more like you're in a mixture of the Ice Age cgi cartoon style meets Don Bluth animation, and I can't wait to see things updated in that sense.
ScorchHellfire Jan 20th 2010 2:21PM
It should not only be the character models from vanilla but all the environmental stuff and the mobs as well... they are all blocky and bad looking now... the square candles and pentagon trees and hexagon pies and octogon wagon wheels were horrible when they first came out and now they are even more so... I hope that if they don't do a major graphics overhaul with cataclysm that it comes in the next one... i'd take another 5 level expansion if they would just do that...
BoomingEchoes Jan 20th 2010 3:19PM
I'd like for every thing to at least catch up to where its at in Lich King.. and I mean every thing.. If they're going to do it they should do it right and not really rebuild Outland but at least reskin it..I mean I'm already imagining there will be a patch eventually that will make Outland friendlier to the cataclysim flow as well as leading into northrend better, so its a given that this would join it.. There's just no sense in leveling a new toon through the old world (When its made new again) to have to go through Outland and deal with "less then elsewhere" graphics then go to Northrend and be back at the crisp visuals you started with.
That said though I'd like to stress, again, that I would like to see it come out to the same way Lich King looks.. Wrath rose the bar for the games graphics and how the were dealt with but didn't break the bank so far as making a lot of people run out and need new computers.. maybe a new graphics card, or lowering some graphics settings, but not a completely new system.. I think its important for WoW's longevity that they don't mess with how the visuals are handled to much..
