Breakfast Topic: Is it time to update WoW character models yet?

Of course, other MMOs are usually the purvey of our sister blog, Massively, but in this case, something caught our eye in a recent report on the making of Lego Universe by the Denver Westword News: The article claims that the number of 3-dimensional surfaces on a single 16-stud Lego Universe brick is twice as many as found on your average World of Warcraft character.
At first glimpse, that number seems a bit confusing. How could a simple Lego brick be that complicated? Of course, it gets a bit easier to understand when you consider a few issues: First, we have to admit that a Lego brick is a lot more complicated than it first appears. Not only do you have each individual stud, but there's the tubes on the undercarriage that allow it to snap onto other bricks. That's a good amount of surfaces.
Of course, the other issue is that World of Warcraft's graphics are 5 years old, and weren't top end even then. Now, I don't want to outright say they're sub-par or primitive. In fact, just today as I was fooling around on my long neglected level 70 hunter, I was marveling once again at the incredible scenery and architecture in Howling Fjord and the amazing Vykrul models. That said, the graphics are showing their age, and this nowhere more apparent than the character models. Only yesterday was I treating my guild to another rant on how Human Males who are not Arthas or Kalecgos (in his half-elf form, which looks mostly human) look like shaved gorillas. And certainly, I'm not the only member of the WoW.com team who'd like a few face lifts.
Of course, the somewhat low-tech look of the PC models has its advantages too. If nothing else, WoW's not-exactly-Crysis level graphics give it a wider audience. Even if you're the type of person who doesn't upgrade their computer more than once every 5-10 years (and there's more of them out there than some of you might think), you can still play WoW. Still, I can't help but think when I look at my poor snub nosed Human death knight that he really deserves to look every bit as pretty as Kalec.
So the question remains: Should Blizzard keep the low level old PC graphics so they can focus on new art and keep system requirements low for their customers? Or is the fact that they're being beat out by a bunch of a bricks a good benchmark for a graphics upgrade? Then again, perhaps they should split the difference and just license some Warcraft Legos, which could then inevitably show up in Lego Universe.

I want character model upgrades so bad. My poor nelf druid boy looks like a long haired monkey. And human males... ugh. Don't even get me started. If the Goblins and Worgen get to look shiny and awesome and new, everyone else should too!
Oneiroi Jan 19th 2010 10:42AM
Speaking of which, I want dwarves to actually have faces. Right now it just looks like a mess of crammed in features.
Moonkinmaniac Jan 19th 2010 11:19AM
Yeah and people may not like blood elfs as much as I do, but there's a reason there's so many of them too. The models are just better. I hope they fix this, its just sad at this point even free to play games run circles around WoW's graphics.

I imagine they'll do the same thing Everquest did eventually. Create better character models and then make them optional. Satisfying both the high end tech crowd and the low budget computer crowd at the same time. But you don't update character models in your spare time. Takes time, money and resources. I don't honestly expect to see this happen until after the next expansion. Perhaps not even until the one after next.
The updating of Druid forms and Shaman totems dose show promise though. I guess we wait and see.

"But you don't update character models in your spare time. Takes time, money and resources."
And making $100 million a month isn't enough to get these? Honestly, I feel like Blizzard is being a bit lazy with WoW lately. From ridiculously long GM wait times (days, honestly?) to recycling capes, armor, and everything else constantly, I feel like they are milking this cash cow as much as possible. I love the game, but the models are just one facet of a long list of things Blizzard easily has the money to update or fix, that they decide not to. They just throw out some great new content every year or two, and ignore almost everything else.
SunGod228 Jan 19th 2010 8:54AM
I'm glad I'm not the only one that has noticed the gm wait time go way way up
sephirah Jan 19th 2010 9:15AM
Hey, don't complain about how does it take for a GM to anwer you... they probably have lag too!
Zilch Jan 19th 2010 10:29AM
@ Kyle
Yeah, they're making over $100m per month. But they are also working on developing 3 expansions out for WoW. And not all the profits from WoW go to develop WoW, I can guarantee that some goes to back other games Blizzard is working on.
Kyle Jan 19th 2010 10:38AM
So it's okay to neglect WoW because they're working on other IP? I took every fact like this into consideration before I said what I said, and I stick by it. This is Blizzard, not a small company. The $100 million isn't their only source of income, and it isn't all they have to spend. I love WoW, but that doesn't mean I can't be critical where criticism is due. The wait times for GMs alone is ridiculous. Not to mention some of the other lazy routes Blizzard has taken. Just because I fault the game in certain areas does NOT mean I fault the game overall.

Blizz has taken the same stance that a lot of companies have, do only enough to keep the customer coming back, and no more. Largely, I blame the influences of Robert Kotick, who is possibly this policies biggest proponent. The low ratio of GMs to Players, the lack of new art, the utter lack of customer service, and other complaints that we the player base have filed over the years, is proof of all that. I imagine that a lot of the Blizz employees that were around before the merger are chafing under Kotick's rule. This is a man who sees us all as walking cash machines for him to take from.
I'm not saying that all the problems are because of Kotick and Activision, in fact I don't know if they are because I didn't play the game pre-merger, but what I do know is that WoW demonstrates the business model that Kotick and Activision are known for.

for reference:
""Kotick is a controversial figure in the press and gaming community. This is in part due to advocating a business strategy focused on developing intellectual property which can be exploited over a long period, occasionally to the exclusion of creating new, risky or niche titles.""

"Yeah, they're making over $100m per month. But they are also working on developing 3 expansions out for WoW."
Thats no excuse. Most HUGE games are done by with over 5 million dollars.
For example Uncharted: Drake's Fortune cost $20 million to make and that game has freaking HUGE production value and advertisement values and it took years to make. Also it was done to new console so that made it also very costy to make.
So the money blizzard gets in month could be used on making over 5-7 huge production valued games in couple years span (If you could use all the money without any loss). Theres no way even Diablo 3 could cost 100 millions to make, its just not even possible unless they have PCs out of gold.
And theres no graphical updates on the most basic things like models? Please..
It would be fair if they didnt have enough people to stretch time for 3D modelling.
But then again.. Activision is the biggest gaming company on market. Im sure theres couple guys spare from making those Guitar hero 1035's.
Mopo Jan 19th 2010 3:14PM
@Zilch
Did you forget that Blizzard/Activision is going to charge full boat for those expansions? WotLK still retails for $40 and it is on back order from gamestop. I am sure if Blizzard really wanted to invest or put resources toward revamping character images they could in a heart beat, but until the data shows that people are leaving wow in droves, it will not happen any time soon.
As a customer I would really like better models and more options for customizing my character, but if you think about it, how often do you run around without your armor?
GoodAndy Jan 19th 2010 8:14AM
I can see where this would take a huge impact on frame rates. Forget going into Dalaran without a beefed up computer. But honestly, I really think they need to have the option to bump it up a notch. And they can always have a LOD setting for player models. The farther you are, the less detail is loaded. Another thing that baffles me sometimes is the character profiles in party or whatever don't load until you are close enough. I'm surprised it doesn't load it instantly. Not really important though.

Listen to this guy.

I believe the graphics need to stay the same, it's one of the good selling points of WoW is just because flat out anybody can run it on their PC, compared to other new MMOs that want to go "all out" on graphics (cough AoC) and there's only a small amount of people that can touch it.
What I do think they can do is add more customization your character. Such as faces, hair, scars, etc. Now, I don't mean like scaling and such like ME or DAO, just more choices.
So...My opinion it's yes, I think there are some things that really need to be updated, and this game has been out for quiet awhile, just so long as the graphics upgrade change isn't as bad as Star Wars Galaxies, because that was absolutely terrible.
BlackTiger™ Jan 19th 2010 8:17AM
DON'T TOUCH MODELS!
Especially not in stupid chineese/korean "pseudo-photo-realistic" way, with makes me sick because if it's plastic artificiality and lack of any "realism".

LOOK AT OUR FEET AND SAY THAT AGAIN

*Upgraded model. Same art style, higher detail level.
*Improved character animation. I'm tired of having a buddy reset my shoulder socket every time I cast while fishing.
*IMPROVED TEXTURES. I have some kind of reject flat toe on the bottom of my feet. Character texture above 256x256 please.
Gnosh Jan 19th 2010 8:57AM
Oh, and I don't even mean 'different' animation. I mean the ones that are there now, cleaned up. The rigging is... not so good atm.
Maybe some more attack animations.
bob Jan 19th 2010 9:05AM
New models, same artistic style. Simple. More polygons doesn't mean WoW will look like Aion, it would just look like a better WoW.
