Breakfast Topic: Is it time to update WoW character models yet?

Of course, other MMOs are usually the purvey of our sister blog, Massively, but in this case, something caught our eye in a recent report on the making of Lego Universe by the Denver Westword News: The article claims that the number of 3-dimensional surfaces on a single 16-stud Lego Universe brick is twice as many as found on your average World of Warcraft character.
At first glimpse, that number seems a bit confusing. How could a simple Lego brick be that complicated? Of course, it gets a bit easier to understand when you consider a few issues: First, we have to admit that a Lego brick is a lot more complicated than it first appears. Not only do you have each individual stud, but there's the tubes on the undercarriage that allow it to snap onto other bricks. That's a good amount of surfaces.
Of course, the other issue is that World of Warcraft's graphics are 5 years old, and weren't top end even then. Now, I don't want to outright say they're sub-par or primitive. In fact, just today as I was fooling around on my long neglected level 70 hunter, I was marveling once again at the incredible scenery and architecture in Howling Fjord and the amazing Vykrul models. That said, the graphics are showing their age, and this nowhere more apparent than the character models. Only yesterday was I treating my guild to another rant on how Human Males who are not Arthas or Kalecgos (in his half-elf form, which looks mostly human) look like shaved gorillas. And certainly, I'm not the only member of the WoW.com team who'd like a few face lifts.
Of course, the somewhat low-tech look of the PC models has its advantages too. If nothing else, WoW's not-exactly-Crysis level graphics give it a wider audience. Even if you're the type of person who doesn't upgrade their computer more than once every 5-10 years (and there's more of them out there than some of you might think), you can still play WoW. Still, I can't help but think when I look at my poor snub nosed Human death knight that he really deserves to look every bit as pretty as Kalec.
So the question remains: Should Blizzard keep the low level old PC graphics so they can focus on new art and keep system requirements low for their customers? Or is the fact that they're being beat out by a bunch of a bricks a good benchmark for a graphics upgrade? Then again, perhaps they should split the difference and just license some Warcraft Legos, which could then inevitably show up in Lego Universe.

Wrong.
The limit is on the data swaps from and to the local video cards in MMO's.
These channels are way too small to handle the data needed from and to the CPU and graphic cards. The hard disk drive speeds that hardly changed over 10 years....
Ask yourself why those extremely long waiting times appear in all those console (and even PC) games "loading graphics screens".
In FACT: WOW is one of the BEST background loading graphics screen games on the market.
You can fly ALL over Northrend and Outland without EVER seeing a graphics loading screen.
So shut up with that nonsense. Blizzard added a fantastic background loading graphics screen to its MMO and could perfectly tune the graphics to the exact medium they want it to be.
The limit is in the design of an open ended MMORPG with no loading screens with present day hardware.
Period. LEARN before posting rubbish.
Are there higher pixeled MMO's ? Yes ... and then watch their OFF line loading graphics screens first and their unresponsive STIFF animations with a stick in the avatar's asses (like Aoc, Lotro, GW, War, you name it).

Interesting...
The only post in the thread giving actual information and not only personal opinions that actually nobody cares about has been modded down, while the first post of the thread (a "Yes.") has been modded up.
Sure, I really need "Yes" to be well visible and not be able instead to read the advantages that low res models give to the gameplay.

@sephirah
Bossy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. Hard disk drives have been improving in both speed and technology, then there's the advances being made in solid-state drives.
Also, who cares about loading screens? People care more about frame rates, and that has more to do with your video card's memory, which has been improving as well.
The lack of loading screens between zones is also not new, nor was it when WoW was released - the original Asheron's Call was seamless! I remember playing that game in High School, and I graduated in 2000.

yes, yes, yes, yes, did I mention, yes?

The graphics aren't really the issue with the game.
Quite frankly, even if the graphics are dated, they're still better than 90% of the MMORPG market, and function very well.
Quite frankly I'm a lot more concerned about what the community management and GM staff has been up to lately.

IMHO, graphics are ok, its just the playable characters that need new finer models, with new skins, aka taunka tauren, forstborn dwarf, felblood orc, more troll tribes, and mechagnomes (I'd FINALLY find a reason to play a gnome if that model existed).
Henchwench Jan 19th 2010 8:50AM
I'd just like it if my female orc's tabard wasn't permanently embedded in her thighs.
Possum Jan 19th 2010 3:21PM
Also, if you could stop my orcs braid clipping through her shield that would be great too..
varulv Jan 19th 2010 8:50AM
They *really* need to update the old races models, if they don't(by cata or at least the first major patch) i'm simply done with WoW.. and yes.. good looking/updated models is a very major thing for some people.
Bossy Jan 19th 2010 9:02AM
Tell that to the 200 million people buying cartridges of Pokemon.
NEVER were pixels and vectors important to the quality of a video game.
WOW's video art is believable to play and live in a 3D world as it is.
Neither have the Flintstones or The Simpsons or Tintin a problem.
Unexpected EOF Jan 19th 2010 9:04AM
Neither the Flintstones nor Tintin's hips imploded when they swung a 2H axe.

@Bossy
Because Pokemon hasn't updated its sprites and graphics over the last ten years the series has existed. Yeah.
Google image Heart Gold/Soul Silver. Clearly graphics were taken into consideration what with all the shiny new 3-D vistas and buildings and higher resolution, animated sprites, especially vs the original Red and Blue versions old, hardly detailed black and white visuals.
Hoggersbud Jan 19th 2010 9:53AM
In fact, I confirm that not only has Pokemon updated the graphics found in the series over the years, they've updated the graphics of the original games to catch up. I haven't exactly played on a DS, but I do know that you can get newer versions of Pokemon Red and Green that have the same story, but much better graphics.
selly Jan 19th 2010 8:50AM
Well, Jaina got a facelift so why can't we?
Irem Jan 19th 2010 8:53AM
My biggest wish is for them to fix some of the animations. I play a troll female main and I would kill for a graceful run that matches the tone of her other animations. They don't look like they could be stealthy under any circumstances, and I've only met one other troll female player that liked it (and that was for comedy value--the "lol she looks like she crapped her pants" type of comedy value).
The animations of a lot of the other races are weird too. Human males running, human females swinging a two-hander...and can we do away with the breast flopping even while in full plate on female dwarves and undead? There's really just a lot of stuff that looks awkward or downright offputting that has nothing to do with the faces on the models, but would go a long way toward making characters look better.
Moorit Jan 19th 2010 9:23AM
Yes, I totally agree about the animations. The female troll looks so graceful on the loading screen and I was really in love with them until I rolled one. I couldn't get through a full level watching that running animation.
The gnome models/animations could use a lot of help too. The lack of polygons is really obvious there. I'm not sure about the males but my female gnome has two sets of knees, one where her mid-thigh should be and another at mid-shin. When she jumps it looks like her legs pick up and move forward relative to her body, like they aren't actually connected under that robe. o_O

Hey, this is a bit unrelated I'm sure, since I haven't read the post yet, but I thought I'd let you guys know more of those spam e-mails are going out...got one this morning. The link was to "wor1d" of warcraft, with another typo in the URL, although the actual text said worldofwarcraft.com.
Twilit Soul Jan 19th 2010 8:57AM
x.x I just now saw "Please keep your comments relevant to this blog entry." I apologize. Yes! I think the models should be changed =D AND they should put themselves into the lego universe. Leech away at their lego-ey profits.
Muse Jan 19th 2010 8:55AM
Update, but do it as it has been being done: One thing at the time rolled out alongside greater patches. Time to both get it right and to let player computers mature and renew naturally.
Russ_E Jan 19th 2010 8:57AM
It wouldnt surprise me if they updated the models for high end PCs, while retaining the low detail ones for those of us still running on a 386...
