I love my characters. I have played them for 5 years now, so I have grown enormously attached to them. Even their animation is part of their "personality". So this is a touchy subject.
My hope is that they never totally replace them, like we saw to druid forms. The druid forms could have been upgraded (more poly counts), and then given the new ones as more options instead of totally wiping the old ones.
If they do anything, then add more options and maybe update polygons on current, but I hope they never change characters so much that I suddenly feel that I don't know my own characters. That's probably one of very few things that could make me leave the game.
I am quoting someone here from a post at European forums:
" the model quality is not really an issue for Blizzard. On the WoW Vanilla Collectors Edition DVD they explained that models are all generated in a higher quality than the game handles, and then scaled down for what the engine currently can handle. "
If this is true, then they can just scale current up a bit.
Wow graphics should not change too much. Its cartoony, colorful visuals makes the game really charming and while more realistic games gets old fast and don't look good after a few years. Cartoony graphics last forever.

Totally agreed.
Being an illustrator myself, this is what drew me to WoW years ago, at the same time took some getting used to, which obviously i now love. There are ways enhance the models without making them look like Sailor Moon / Gears of War characters in the face.

Because the human males DON'T look like Gears of War characters with their ridiculous build already?

If you made the option of choosing between new, updated models and the original ones, my guess is 99% of the player community would choose the new ones. You think there are any druids out there, beyond the vocal minority, who still wish for the old models at this point?
I'd think Blizzard wouldn't go through the trouble of making both options available since most people who'd call for it would probably just choose the new ones after a few days anyway.

And that is why the new Star Wars MMO(The Old Republic) is going with a stylized cartoony style for its character models. Cartoony ages well. Plus if you look at the TOR character models, they're just as cartoony as WoW's(maybe slightly more stylized), but they still aren't using that heavy a polygon count or texture detail. If you look close, you can still see the jagged lines. I'd put TOR's graphics at about the level of LK's high-quality "hero" models(Arthas, Lich King, Alextrasza, etc.), maybe at the level of Cataclysm(or the expansion after Cat, if you're really picky). Cartoony can be done in high quality and still look good.
