Totem Talk: Elemental 101, Part 3

9. Your basic Elemental rotation
Elemental, as mentioned several times above, has a very simple rotation.
- Cast Flame Shock to apply the Flame Shock DoT.
- Cast Lava Burst, which is a guaranteed crit on a target afflicted by Flame Shock.
- Cast Lightning Bolt until Lava Burst's cooldown is up.
- Cast Lava Burst again.
- Cast Lightning Bolt until the Flame Shock DoT expires.
- Go to 1.

As you acquire more haste, you'll be able to squeeze in more Lightning Bolts in between Lava Bursts. There's little variation in this rotation until you acquire certain set bonuses which affect the way that Flame Shock and Lava Burst work.
Chain Lightning technically does more damage than Lightning Bolt, but has a considerably higher mana cost. If you can get to the point where you can Chain Lightning regularly without offsetting the mana cost with Thunderstorms, you can replace Lightning Bolt with it, but for most beginners, you'll have a long way to go before that's possible.
For AoE: you'll be switching to Chain Lightning over the stock version and aiming for whatever has the most health. Drop your Magma totem in a convenient location and hit Fire Nova on every cooldown for maximum AoE damage. Unfortunately, shaman AoE is still clunky, and we're essentially the only ranged class that's required to get into the thick of it to maximize our AoE damage.
10. Gems
Basic Elemental gemming follows some pretty simple rules.
- Gem only for SP and haste. Reckless Ametrines and their blue-quality brethren are a fine choice for any slot, but you can choose to stack either one or the other if you're trying to hit a certain landmark (enough haste for another Bolt between Bursts, for example).
- Never gem for crit. We'll go into this at more detail at a later date, but the general idea is that you tend to have enough crit on your gear and with your talents that it's less effective to gem it than SP or haste.
- Never gem for int, spirit or mp5. Int and mp5 are for Resto, not you, and spirit is objectively awful.
- Use the Chaotic Skyflare Diamond as your meta and Glowing Dreadstones to meet the two blue sockets you'll inevitably find in your tier gear to get your meta bonus.
- For jewelcrafters: Use Runed Dragon's Eyes in three available red sockets in place of whatever you'd normally use.
- Don't worry too much about matching sockets unless the bonus is particularly good (read: it'll offset the loss of stats from the gem you would normally use in that slot) or it's to get a meta bonus.
There are a number of major Elemental glyphs, though some edge others out slightly in the late game. For now we'll talk about the top four.
- Glyph of Lightning Bolt: A static 4% increase to your most-used spell. Should be on everyone's glyph page.
- Glyph of Flame Shock: Remember, you should have close to 100% Flame Shock uptime, so this glyph adds a good chunk of DPS (usually around 4%).
- Glyph of Totem of Wrath: Whenever you put Totem of Wrath down, you get an extra 30% (84) of its spell power for five minutes. Just you, though.
- Glyph of Lava: This glyph is outclassed by the one above until very late in the Wrath game. You'll need above 3900 active spell power for this one to be better.
12. Enchants for the endgame
- Mace/Dagger: Mighty Spellpower
- Staff: Greater Spellpower
- Shield: Greater Intellect
- Helm: Arcanum of Burning Mysteries
- Cloak: Greater Speed (or Lightweave Embroidery for tailors)
- Shoulders: Greater Inscription of the Storm (or Master's Inscription of the Storm for scribes)
- Chest: Powerful Stats
- Bracers: Superior Spellpower (or Fur Lining - Spell Power for leatherworkers)
- Gloves: Exceptional Spellpower (or Precision if under hit cap, or Hyperspeed Accelerators for engineers)
- Belt: Eternal Belt Buckle (of course)
- Pants: Sapphire Spellthread
- Boots: Icewalker if not hit-capped, otherwise use Tuskarr's Vitality (or Nitro Boosters for engineers)
- Rings: Greater Spellpower for enchanters

A nice succinct, clear guide to get the pew pew shaman going. Good job!

Definitely looks like this guy knows what he's talking about. It's a breath of fresh air.

Great hire wow.com!! Now if I could just get one of these "cheat sheets" for the two Shaman specs I play...

Does Chain Lightning have a better DPS than Lightning bolt for a single target?
Michael Sacco Jan 19th 2010 4:08PM
It has a higher base damage, along with a longer cooldown and higher mana cost.
Noah Jan 19th 2010 4:09PM
Technically, yes, but it is known to have a much worse scaling with spellpower (so eventually less damage) and costs much more mana.
Michael Sacco Jan 19th 2010 4:12PM
That's correct. Their two spellpower coefficients are:
Lightning Bolt .794
Chain Lightning .641
CiM Jan 19th 2010 5:58PM
...what? No they're not. The spellpower coefficient of CL is 2/3.5 = .5714 and of LB is 2.5/3.5 = .7143. Shamanism is an additive 15% bonus to both for a final coefficient figure of 72.14% of your spellpower added to Chain Lightning and 86.43% of it added to Lightning Bolt.
I suppose some other comments now that I'm writing anyway:
I agree with other commentators that Eye of the Storm is nearly a mandatory PvE talent. In the raid game (and even in heroics) there are plenty of effects which cause pushback and would dramatically reduce elemental DPS were it not for that talent. But I agree with you about Tuskarr's > Icewalker, though mostly from an endgame raid perspective. If the player needs hit it *is* a decent place to pick it up.
Haste does in fact affect all our actions/spells, just not in the same way. Black Magic is nonetheless inferior to Mighty Spellpower in almost all situations (check out the analysis here: http://wowhats.wordpress.com/2009/12/21/black-magic-stay-away-from-da-voodoo/ ). But I can't possibly recommend anyone gems for haste. The ONLY stat worth gemming for is spellpower, no exceptions - EXCEPT to get a spellpower yellow socket bonus, in which case Reckless gems are worth using. While some may choose to gem for haste in a particular circumstance, that requires a very advanced knowledge of the mechanics involved and your own specific situation, and is not really appropriate for a 101 introduction.
(Also, I really enjoyed levelling as elemental, and that was before the many improvements added since patch 2.4.)
CiM Jan 19th 2010 5:58PM
Eh, though having criticised like that, it is actually a pretty good introduction to elemental and even manages to touch on some of the big problems of the class-spec at the same time - and it's a heck of a lot better than any other posts on elemental I've seen on WoW.com in a very long time :) Good job Sacco!

There's honestly not too much difference between using or not using Chain Lightning on a single target. Chain Lightning does have a marginally higher damage per cast time than Lightning Bolt, but that comes with a much higher mana and a lower chance of proccing Lightning Overload (Chain Lightning has its 33% proc chance split between its three hits, so on a single target you only have an 11% chance to proc it).
Mr42 Jan 19th 2010 8:24PM
as enhancement shaman, i know it is always better to use lightning bolt on single target
however, in attempt to prove it, i've made a simple spreadsheet (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AqW5BIt4CR0JdGlnVjdqVkNleHF3Q3NyYUw3cjRZVGc&hl=en) and it appears that due to Shamanism, Chain Lightning becomes much better (15% flat (additive) spellpower bonus is way bigger improvement for cl than for lb)
now i do not play elemental, nor ever did, so there may be mistakes, but with LB scoring bigger hits at 3800+ spellpower (at longer cast time), i can see single target CL as a dps improvement for beginning elemental shaman who can afford it mana-wise
i will not agree on Eye of the Storm, however. That one IS a must have.
Qot Jan 19th 2010 11:37PM
Just to pile on the CL/LB debate, there is one time when using chain lightning will always be beneficial: when your Lava Burst cooldown is less than the cast time of your chain lightning. Rather than spending the extra time charging up a larger lightning bolt (or twiddling your thumbs), you can get in a CL then throw out a Lava Burst right as it is coming off cooldown.
To expand upon the above flowchart:
If Flame shock is not up, Flame Shock. If Lava Burst is up, Lava Burst. If Lava Burst CD is greater than the (haste adjusted) cast time of Chain Lightning, Lightning Bolt. Otherwise, Chain Lightning.
Shiabre Jan 19th 2010 3:20PM
Strongly disagree on the idea that Eye of the Storm is not useful, and should be replaced with Elemental Warding. Elementals towards the end game already suffer enough from having no viable instants for movement fights, so opening yourself up to full pushback effects when you finally can stand still is a bad idea.
The only time I've seen any Elemental put points into Warding is for a PvP focused build.

This is such a nice guide. now, if only you guys wrote one up detailing Unholy DPS... I would love to see something a little bit more clear on what to do with my DK.
Squeek Jan 19th 2010 3:25PM
Definitely a great introductory guide to the class, though if we're going to mention shortcomings, there's one more. We're the only caster class that has to run into melee range to do our AOE DPS.
It's an archaic mechanic that has needed to be fixed forever, but we doubt it ever will be.
As for page 2. You mention we shouldn't get Eye of the Storm. I couldn't disagree more, especially since there's nothing else worth getting. There are numerous boss fights where you will suffer pushback from uninterruptable AOEs. Off the top of my head, in just the first wing of ICC alone, Marrowgar, Deathwhisper, Gunship, and some of the trash all have abilities that affect your cast times. Bone Storm hits will add to your timer, Frost Bolt Volley will add to your timer, random arrows from hunters on the enemy ship will add to your timer, etc.
You also don't really talk about the tiny variance in specs between shaman who get Convection and shaman who spec into Warding. Both skills have pros and cons, but the "cookie-cutter" build has 5/5 Convection.
Nobody will have mana problems in Elemental, but that doesn't mean we should remove EVERY mana-saving talent from our tree. Even with all of the mana regen talents, I notice my mana dropping in heroics that don't have a Replenishment user, solely because of all the chain lightning use. That -10% really does help, and it's not like we'll get a DPS gain from speccing anywhere else.
And page 3, one minor thing. The boot enchant most people will have is Icewalker for 12 hit and 12 crit. Even if you're hit-capped, 12 crit is a DPS gain, whereas Tuskarr's is not.
Michael Sacco Jan 19th 2010 3:41PM
Re: Icewalker, the consensus on most theorycrafting sites tends to be that the movement speed increase on Tuskarr's Vitality = more DPS time in the vast number of movement-heavy fights we see in the late game, as compared to the small (but not insignificant) crit boost that Icewalker gives us.
The Convection/Unrelenting Storm/every-other-mana-talent issue is also sort of contentious because your mileage may vary heavily depending on your gear, raid makeup, etc., but I'll append a note to it.
Zayd Jan 19th 2010 3:24PM
You make it sound rather boring playing one though...
supracom Jan 19th 2010 3:36PM
Leveling as Elemental isn't boring at all. Your screen is guaranteed to explode with crits, lightning overload, and clearcasting procs. And once you have lava burst, pvp becomes very gratifying. Those silly plate classes have no protection against your fire and nature damage.
Michael Sacco Jan 19th 2010 3:55PM
That's just the thing, though -- you get Lava Burst at 75, a full 74 levels into the game. You go through nearly the entire game casting nothing but Lightning Bolt.
I compare it to leveling as a ret paladin pre-Crusader Strike -- for the entire game. And while Clearcasting is certainly nice, it's no Art of War!
