What we know about the Warcraft movie

Last week, we reported that the Warcraft movie may be on its way. Previously there had been speculation that the film's development would be pushed back, since director Sam Raimi was tied up by problems with Spider-Man 4. Raimi then unexpectedly walked away from Spider-Man 4, citing creative reasons, and it suddenly looked hopeful that he might soon be turning his attention to the Warcraft film.
So now, in preparation for more news on the film, we will be bringing you up to date on what we currently know about the Warcraft movie.
Who
- Legendary Pictures will be producing the film. The company purchased the rights to the film from Blizzard in May 2006. Legendary Pictures' impressive resume includes Batman Begins, 300, Watchmen, and The Hangover.
- Sam Raimi, director of The Evil Dead series and, of course, the Spider-Man franchise, was announced as director for the Warcraft film in July 2009.
- Robert Rodat will be writing the script, according to an October 2009 interview with Raimi. Rodat is the screenwriter for Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot.
- There is currently no confirmation that the lead character will be an existing character in Warcraft lore. Raimi said in his October interview that he wanted to make a film about the game itself, meaning a film that features the land and lore of Azeroth.
- Chris Metzen said at Blizzcon 2007, that the Warcraft movie will definitely be a war movie, not a quest movie like The Lord of the Rings. Given Rodat was picked for the script, this fits the bill.
- Metzen also said Thrall will be in the movie during that same panel. This may be subject to change now that Raimi and Rodat are on the film, but Horde fans can hope!
Where
There is no confirmation on a shooting location yet, but rumors at Ain't It Cool News mention Raimi is in communication with "a certain legendary locale." This may mean that we will soon be seeing more of New Zealand. This would be appropriate given the director's experience there. Raimi was the producer for the television series Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, both of which were filmed in New Zealand. If Blizzard and Legendary Pictures had New Zealand in mind from the start, it may be one of the reasons Raimi was selected for the film.
When
This is the big question, and unfortunately there is no answer to it yet. When we know, you will.

Well, I think Snooki is at the casting call for the role of a Female Dwarf Hunter...

All I know is that we need the Forsaken somewhere in this movie. They just look too damn good in the game to be left out. Same goes for a majority for the rest of the races. (Yes, including humans in the above statement.)

now i want to know whether or not Metzen is reprising his role as the voice of Thrall or not, honestly if Thrall is CGI he has to be voiced by Metzen or he would not be the Thrall we know and
Musterion Jan 19th 2010 11:32PM
Robert Z'dar for Garrosh!
Ron Perlman for Thrall!
Richard O'Brien for any kind of blood elf!
jon Jan 20th 2010 8:56AM
And Bruce Campbell as the main character as a human hunter. that way he can have his shotgun.
Tyr Jan 19th 2010 10:12PM
Will all human males have hair lips/DBZ haircuts? Will all Night Elf females bounce unpredictably? Willl Draenei do the Tunak dance? Will The Lich King be played by Christian Bale? Will all warlocks be carrying staves patented by Kralnor industries? Will cat durid be 4 fite?
So many questions left unanswered!
nieboh Jan 19th 2010 10:34PM
If the Night Elf females don't bounce unpredictably or do little front flips when they jump, I'm walking out of the theater.
Moorit Jan 19th 2010 10:49PM
Don't you love the idea of a party of five adventurers running from one town to the next, and every few steps one of them jumps in the air for no good reason?
I mean heck, if it's supposed to be a movie about the game...
Darbaris Jan 20th 2010 12:31AM
Will party members randomly go "LOL" even when there's nothing amusing happening? Will the protagonist(s) die, only to get resurrected, thereby destroying any emotional agony in the meaning of death? Will gnomes randomly spout "My, you're a tall one!"?
I can't wait to find out!

Sssh, there's no room on this site for anything Oceanic related.
That's why we got this consolidation post, but nothing about the Oceanic guild being the first to down Lana'thel on 25-man.

I heard about that first kill, actually. =)

99.9% of the time I enjoy WoW.com posts, no offence guys, but this didn't really offer your readers anything new, nor did it add any commentary to supplement the old news...

Yeah, recapping is pointless. Sure, it helps n00bs who are just now getting into things, but do you really want to bring anyone who doesn't already know everything up to speed? Better to server a continually dwindling population of hardcore fans who know every last little detail and drop anyone in the dust who misses a bit of news and can't keep up. Readership numbers are lame, you need to serve the elite hard core and not try to be "inclusive". Sheesh, next think you know, you're have actual *casuals* reading your site, and that'll be the end of it all... :p

From darkhorizons.com:
...................................
Sam Raimi's producing partner Robert Tapert says that despite the rumors, the former "Spider-Man" film series director has yet to make a decision about his next project.
"I don't want to speak on Sam's behalf, because the 'Spider-Man' thing happened so recently. I think he's getting his feet under him and trying to decide. He might want to do a teeny, tiny small film, but I don't know what he wants to do. I know he had a great time doing 'Drag Me to Hell'" Tapert told iF Magazine.
What about the "Warcraft" movie he's linked to over at Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures? Tapert says "It's in development. We're in the outline/story/script phase". It was confirmed late last year that Robert Rodat ("Saving Private Ryan") is penning the screenplay.

Just like when they announced a transformers movie all I can picture is guys running around with huge cardboard costumes lol Well hopefully they will be better than the spiderman movies.

Kinda. But New Zealand is a fantasy movie-makers dream. It seems to have almost every major fantasy geographic staple there is. Just look at the Lord of the Rings trilogy. All of Middle Earth, which should at least be the size of a continent, is in New Zealand. Rohan, Fangorn Forest, the Orthanac, the Shire and the Old Forest, all were filmed in New Zealand, and I think that other major locales from the movie were also filmed there.
Sparcrypt Jan 19th 2010 10:53PM
You're a special kind of stupid aren't you?
We don't know anything... except whos writing/directing, the general feel of the movie, how the horde and alliance will be portrayed and some possible characters that will show up...
Yeah nothing whatsoever is known. It's a mystery.

...And now I'm apprehensive. I detest war movies. They're boring and depressing. :(

Well then you can go watch Legally Blond 4. Yea...that's the only alternative. Enjoy.
