What we know about the Warcraft movie

Last week, we reported that the Warcraft movie may be on its way. Previously there had been speculation that the film's development would be pushed back, since director Sam Raimi was tied up by problems with Spider-Man 4. Raimi then unexpectedly walked away from Spider-Man 4, citing creative reasons, and it suddenly looked hopeful that he might soon be turning his attention to the Warcraft film.
So now, in preparation for more news on the film, we will be bringing you up to date on what we currently know about the Warcraft movie.
Who
- Legendary Pictures will be producing the film. The company purchased the rights to the film from Blizzard in May 2006. Legendary Pictures' impressive resume includes Batman Begins, 300, Watchmen, and The Hangover.
- Sam Raimi, director of The Evil Dead series and, of course, the Spider-Man franchise, was announced as director for the Warcraft film in July 2009.
- Robert Rodat will be writing the script, according to an October 2009 interview with Raimi. Rodat is the screenwriter for Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot.
- There is currently no confirmation that the lead character will be an existing character in Warcraft lore. Raimi said in his October interview that he wanted to make a film about the game itself, meaning a film that features the land and lore of Azeroth.
- Chris Metzen said at Blizzcon 2007, that the Warcraft movie will definitely be a war movie, not a quest movie like The Lord of the Rings. Given Rodat was picked for the script, this fits the bill.
- Metzen also said Thrall will be in the movie during that same panel. This may be subject to change now that Raimi and Rodat are on the film, but Horde fans can hope!
Where
There is no confirmation on a shooting location yet, but rumors at Ain't It Cool News mention Raimi is in communication with "a certain legendary locale." This may mean that we will soon be seeing more of New Zealand. This would be appropriate given the director's experience there. Raimi was the producer for the television series Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, both of which were filmed in New Zealand. If Blizzard and Legendary Pictures had New Zealand in mind from the start, it may be one of the reasons Raimi was selected for the film.
When
This is the big question, and unfortunately there is no answer to it yet. When we know, you will.

Damn, at first glance I thaught that was a giant sheep but in the distance, stepping on mountains and crushing tree's. I was kinda scared tbh :S
AngelicSlayer23 Jan 20th 2010 10:42AM
Do we have to wait ten or fifteen years for this movie to come out?
fernando Jan 20th 2010 10:40AM
i am interested in the sheep thing... i hope they take the humor side of the game, if the movie takes wow seriously then is going to be a joke

while the Spider-Man movies were fun, i didn't care for them. the Spider-Man i knew had a comment for everything. aside from Deadpool, he is the most mouthiest super hero/super villian in Marvel. yet, Spidey was silent. i always felt robbed and short changed. there was no one liners or anything. how you can have Spider-Man and him not have a mouth, i honestly don't know. no matter how many times they redo him in movies, if his mouth isn't running, you won't have my money at the theatre, and i may or may not rent it.
that aside back to the topic....
i am curious about a warcraft movie. how it fits in with all the games and comics, i haven't heard yet. i have read some of the books, but not all. it does make me nervous, as of today, there hasn't been a movie based on a game that has done well. maybe the new Prince of Persia changes that, but it has yet to be seen. i just hope if it flops, WoW doesn't follow suit as the Mortal Combat games fell apart after the movies tanked.

Thank you!
I thought I was the only person that found Raimi's wall-crawler nothing at all like the Spidey I know and love.

i vote mr T in the role of THRALL! and brad pitt like arthas or some kind of paladin!
deathpool1984 Jan 20th 2010 12:56PM
I hear Arthas drops a legendary pair of 3D Glasses and a "vendor trash" grey Movie Ticket with a little quip, "Legendary Pictures makes Legendary Picture!"

does anyone know if the movie will be animated or will there be actual ppl dressed up like orcs, and taurens...etc.
I was about to mention if people will dress like humans lol.
Charlie Jan 20th 2010 4:21PM
Yeah it's going to be live-action.
Think Avatar, but wow.
SoundScape Jan 20th 2010 7:52PM
@Charlie
Are you suggesting Avatar was live-action?
leitniear14 Feb 7th 2010 10:18AM
@soundscape
i think there were enough people to justify live action with animated elements, not an animated movie with live action elements

Legendary Pictures- No big problem with this, only that you guys listed Zach Snyder movies.
Sam Ramni- I'm very interested to see how he'll progress through the movie. I think he's a good director and has the power to make the movie work.
Robert Rodat- Ya, they're war films, but can he really embrace the fantasy and make something quickly paced? Don't know. Not 100% enthusiastic, but as long as he has help among the developement team every step along the way.
New Zealand? You mean this'll be live action (At least with humans)?
Well, we'll see how it goes. I just pray it's better than Evil Dead or any Uwe Bole movies.

I’m to lazy to look up the blizzard references, but we also know
- No Gnomes
- New heroes
- Not set in today’s Warcraft world, its set a few years back, I forget which war its based around
- Alliance biased
edzralenn Jan 20th 2010 8:58PM
lady sylvannas must be in it !
whoever is casting, pelase don't mess this up !
Ourprisonplanet Jan 22nd 2010 6:47PM
Is it just me... Or would it not be awesome to see the warlock pets in live-action???
Lathania Jan 28th 2010 11:11AM
@yoshimitsu
I heard from multiple sources that it was both going to be Thrall based and therefore Horde based. Therefore it has to be concluded that all of these things are merely speculation atm.
And yes, most probably no gnomes ;) Except in my salad.

Guess they're still queuing for the Battlegrounds.

Frøstshock Jan 28th 2010 5:02PM
Lame.. I was hoping the whole thing would be done like the Cinematics were. They looked awesome :D
agannaio1 Jan 28th 2010 6:21PM
People have got to remember though, this is not a WoW movie. It's *Warcraft*. No "World of". So don't expect to see anything recent in WoW history.
