This is War is the first machinima effort by Rogue Frog Productions. You can see an amalgam of techniques in the video, which certainly shows that Rogue Frog is taking huge steps with his style. I hope he continues to grow as he explores machinima creation, since there's a lot of good hints toward viable talent in this video.
30 Seconds to Mars is a good band to sing about Northrend since their moody, somber feel highlights the questionable morality of everyone involved in the northern wars. The video seems to be very open to interpretation. It avoids giving a clear, inalienable message and instead sticks to presenting the audience with a series of genre flashes and montages throughout Northrend.
Medivh was an interesting choice to use as a singer for the song, but I actually think that it works out fairly well. He doesn't look quite like any other World of Warcraft character model, so stands a little apart from everyone. It's a good choice for a narrator, and I'd like to see Rogue Frog explore that in later videos.

They basically made their whole album frantically because they were (or did) get(ting) sued by their record company. 30STM had a 4 album contract and wasn't moving anywhere with their 3rd album. Apparently Jared Leto used some of the money for his film making too.
30STM had a 3 album contract. And they did not get sued because they came out with This Is War, supposed to be released by April 2009, but was never released until December of 2009.
I was confused by that as well, along with the description of "their moody, somber feel." I had to check the video to make sure they were talking about the same 30 Seconds to Mars I know. Unfortunately, it was.
If 30STM is somber, then I wonder what that would make Katatonia and Opeth. Wrist-slashingly depressing?
Somber and depressing are not synonymous. Somber implies a degree of weight and gravity that depressing does not, and while somber occasions are often sad occasions, anything that is approached without humor or excitement can be termed "somber."
I really loathe that kind of music simply because of the vocal style. It clashes with the rest of the music in this case, and therefore the overall feeling. I also have an arbitrary dislike of machinima that have in-game characters singing pre-made songs.
That said, this is quite good for what it is. Rogue Frog has a great eye for vistas and composition, and the image changes were smooth enough that I had no problem watching the entire video ... other than the vocals.
it was pretty good for a first attempt. Although, I'd like to see more time spent on your camera movements. Most of them where just so shaky it took away from the shot, for me. Also, when you combine your camera movement ingame with a quick zoom with whatever editing program you're using, it further disjoints it because the zoom is smooth but everything before it was jerky. Mind you, there's a difference between a shake that is reminiscent of a handheld camera and the movement your cameras exhibited.

This song was on a video for Dragon Age. Try watching that video instead. Much more powerful than this one.
Jared Leto for President!

Yep, I think they made the song for the game, too.
This video's not bad, though.

No thanks.

Now THAT is what we call 'Cheating The System'.

The song is in the game, too.

And then Radiohead would probably make me want to commit suicide if that song is depressing lol.

You can't use Medivh as a singer, that's made of fail...
Zanathos Jan 19th 2010 4:41PM
Medivh can do whatever he want, foo!

I approve the use of troll mage.
Characters singing songs like this isn't great though.
