Breakfast Topic: Caught between a rock

Yes, the rocks.
You see, I am part of a small, but growing number of WoW players who collect rocks. For those of you who overlook this highly sophisticated hobby, I encourage you to give it some research. Blizzard has gone through great efforts to supply an expansive assortment of wonderful, prized rocks over the years and expansions. These items are really what separate World of Warcraft from other MMOs, by adding another dimension of enjoyment to the game.
| a. Rock | b. Pet Rock | c. A Very Pretty Rock | d. Shiny Polished Stone |
| e. Lucky Rock | f. Happy Fun Rock | g. A Pretty Rock | h. Rock Chip |
Above you can see my treasured collection. Admittedly, not all of my rocks are 100% pure, but I am quite the sucker for derivative pieces. You'll see exhibit d is actually a stone, but it holds a great deal of sentimental value to me.
For those of you unfamiliar with rock collecting, I'd like to point out exhibits a and c. These are Blizzard's latest geologic additions to the game, added during The Wrath of the Lich King expansion. I feel they have both had a huge impact on rock collecting and Blizzard's philosophy on it. You see, exhibit a, Rock, is the first of its kind in that it is extremely common. It's so common that many elite rock collectors scoff at it, saying it is unremarkable. The same has been said about A Very Pretty Rock, which was criticized as "treading old ground."
I personally disagree with these assessments, though. Previously, very few players were exposed to rocks as it was regarded as a pastime of the elite. Now though, because of these new WotLK rocks, many new players are being introduced to rock collecting for the first time and their influence on Blizzard is making many great changes and development to rock collecting. I think the brash comments from veteran rock collectors are just the result of feeling overwhelmed by the surge of new faces in the community. By the time Cataclysm comes out, I think we'll all find that the increased interest in rock collecting will really help to innovate it to new heights. Archaeology, anyone?
That doesn't mean we can't revisit some more old favorites, though! Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'm really excited for rumors about an Orphan Pet Rock that "looks sad." If Blizzard is listening, I'm very interested in finding a companion to my prized Lucky Rock. Perhaps a Luckier Rock?
Whatever the future may hold, I am on the edge of my seat.
So, to all the pack rats out there: Blizzard has stated they plan to improve upon the backpack next expansion. What do you intend to fill it with? If you're not a pack rat, are there any quirks or fun pastimes you've assigned to yourself in the game?

So do I. I don't have every helm I ever wore, but I do have most of the quirkiest ones. I'm still kicking myself for selling, in a fit of cleaning, the beer hat from the zeppelin quest in Hellfire. I have been known to run Wrath 25 mans in the wrong hat because I was showing one to someone and forgot to take it off.
And quirky named things. I got the "Beetle Stabber" from Pit of Saron as no one wanted it. I have the "Pitchfork of Madness" and a scepter off the boss in BRD.
And my T2 gear, and the staff that calls Archmage Vargoth, and stuff from the Zandalar tribe, and a couple of journals, and...roots around...Old Ironjaw, and this pinwheel axe I got somewhere and my level 70 and 80 Horseman's Blades and...all my pilgrim costumes and my lovely blue and black dresses and a green dress...
A wardrobe please. Oh yes, or 100 slot bags.

Most epic win blue item in the game, 30 levels later and I still can't bring myself to delete it. Same with my epic lvl 60 pvp gear, and t1, and t2

I collect all the items that are movie references. Doesn't matter if it is a purple or a gray. Although, the Captured Firefly has eluded me (and I don't have the gold to pay for one on the AH... I have 3 raiding toons to support :D)

I collect insults. Patch 3.3 has been my Best Patch Ever, as the LFG tool means that more insults are flying around the system than ever before. My hard drive is groaning under the weight of them all, and I may soon have to change from tank/healer dual spec to DPS so that I can gather them at a slower pace.

Holiday clothes, items from particularly epic or otherwise memorable quests, and every epic staff I've ever owned for my druid (starting with the one from heroic Botanica). I also still have a ton of stuff (including 250 necrotic runes) from the Scourge Invasion event.

One of the interesting things about WoW is how many little side things there are to do. However, I am not sure that the article is being completely literal. Replace Rock with Raid and re-read it. Perhaps this is intentional?
Dawn Moore Jan 20th 2010 10:28AM
Yes, it is definitely intentional. However, that intention was a side effect of writing a very unusual article late at night - er I mean, aren't I a literary genius?! Just kidding.
Anyway, the article didn't start out as a convoluted analogy (as I really do have an in-game rock collection that started in vanilla WoW) but as I wrote the connections started to stick out. A Pretty Rock originates from vanilla and A Very Pretty Rock is its Wrath counterpart. Rock is an item easily found fishing in Wintergrasp, where as most rocks before that came from pickpocketing - Rock really went mainstream. So, once the coincidence jumped out at me, I went with it.
That all said, the article is somewhat literal and somewhat allegorical. =) I don't think there is actually a community of rock collectors. Maybe there will be after this post?
Adeany Jan 20th 2010 10:39AM
How do you fish up a rock in WG? I've been here all morning trying to get one, and all I've gotten is 8 stacks of fish...
Priestess Jan 20th 2010 12:21PM
@Adeany
What you fish up is related to your fishing skill. It's possible that if you are maxed out and using any of the +skill fishing poles, you will be completely unable to catch anything BUT fish there or anywhere. Try using a different character perhaps.

Lol. Awesome topic.
Personally I just collect junk. Bits and pieces of everything. My inventory and banks are always a mess.

Back in the 60's i started collecting the grey "Moldy Leather" set...my bf's characters name is Moldy, and i thought it was funny walking around in the complete Moldy outfit :P
Unfortunately i deleted them...i might have to revisit the old 60's dungeons to get them back..

Lifeless stone.
odd that you're missing it.
loop_not_defined Jan 20th 2010 10:53AM
Oh wow, good catch...
Missing "Lifeless Stone" is almost too much. I don't think Dawn should continue to represent rock collecting on Wow.com. Could we please get a columnist that isn't a complete noob?
:P

I myself am a bag collector. I've made it a bit of my life's work to collect all sorts of unusual bags. My first "unique" bag was the Deviate Hide Pack (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=918), and I've only continued from there. I've got the original Onyxia Hide Backpack (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=17966) which is no longer available, the Halaani bag, the new Enlarged Onyxia Hide Backpack, the Dragon Hide Bag (from Sartharion), several of the various Hallow's End bags, etc.
Eventually, given enough time (and money (and bank space)) I hope to have one of every single bag in the game.
(cutaia) Jan 20th 2010 10:56AM
Oh, the irony!
Putting bags in bags? That's like taking a picture of a camera you crazy person!
staffan.johansson Jan 20th 2010 11:31AM
Sup dawg, I heard you like bags.
Jollies Jan 20th 2010 10:45AM
I think its safe to say that Dawn got his/her 'rocks' off in this post?
snarkygoldfish Jan 20th 2010 10:56AM
Books! My main has a dedicated spot in her bank for the various books she's picked up along the way, from the romance novels, to the ones she's collected from quests (I can't bring myself to turn in my copy of 'Frost Shock and you')
It started as a minor joke when I decided that i was going to go back to school for my LIS master's.
http://www.wowwiki.com/Category:World_of_Warcraft_book_items -- unfortunately, as you can see, it's going to take some determined narrowing of focus/analysis and a lot more bank space if I want to approach as complete a collection as is possible!
