Bobby Kotick didn't think Blizzard was worth $7 million in '96

The Escapist clued us in to this little story: back in 1995, Kotick was eating lunch with some folks from Davidson & Associates, and they told him that they had just bought up-and-coming software developer Blizzard Entertainment for the tidy sum of seven million dollars -- a number that a baffled Kotick believed to be ridiculous. At the time, Blizzard's claim to fame was Warcraft: Orcs vs. Humans, and ... that's pretty much it, save for a few one-off games like Blackthorne and The Lost Vikings. Kotick called them nothing more than a "contract developer" and remarked that they weren't worth seven million bucks.
Of course, later that year, Blizzard released Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, which catapulted them into gaming history forever. Thirteen years later, in 2008, Kotick (and Activision) paid seven billion dollars to acquire Blizzard. For those not into mathematics, that's one thousand times more than what Davidson & Associates paid.
Well, he was right about one thing. They definitely weren't worth seven million bucks. He just didn't know how right he was at the time.

Exactly - not sure where this article is coming from at all, as it's horribly inaccurate.

I must say even though I'm not commenting much on the article, I thought it was well written and interesting.

I can't wait for the new Blackthorne MMOFPS.
...Oh wait, too soon?

That's pretty much the definition of irony.

For all those not aware:
Bobbly Kotick took a failing Activision in 1993 and came from a 40 million dollar company to a whopping 4 billion dollar in 2009 too.
So actually in the stock market he is considered a genious whether gamers like it or not.
So indeed, Blizzard was not worth the 7 millions back then in 1995 and was worth every penny of the 7 billion in 2008.
Why? Blizzard makes with only one game a turnover of around 1.3 billion dollar each year. So at this rate Blizzard is fully paid for in 2013, without even the extra benifit of SC2, Diablo 3 and the new mmorpg which will be launched around that time.
A pure win- win for the 7 billion dollar buyer.
While in 1995, a game compnay with 1 modest hits and 2 duds certainly was NOT worth the 7 million.

Let's admit it, Bobby Kotick is a man we all love to hate. Yet, I look at Blizzard and all it's games coming out, and they still seem original.
Some will cry false about SC2 being broken up into 3 games and blaming Kotick (even I'll admit I was on the hate train there), but at the same time they have shown they are still committed to being the Blizzard we love, and Activision has really left them alone when it comes to it.
So, I beg you, as one man who loves WoW just like all of you....can we please leave Kotick alone....and go back to what really needs to be addressed?
And that is, why aren't we hating Garrosh or Fandrel this much!? SERIOUSLY!! This is just plain good trolling going to waste...I say we re-direct it to the official forums about our hatred for the above 2...and start a club
Yes....better than the I.H.A.T.E.W.A.R.L.O.C.K.S committee...It will be the Legion of Garrosh/Fandrel Haters Union! We'll meet this Sunday to discuss it, and their will be milk and cookies. And cake....lot's of cake

2 duds? I assume you were referring to one of them as The Lost Vikings. You do know that is one of the most popular puzzle games of all time, right? It was ported to almost every platform at the time, it has has a sequel. It's still being released today. You can even get it for the Game Boy Advanced. Clones of it exist everywhere.

I despise Kotick and Acitivision Blizzard's yearly release shedule of the same garbage but it's easy to mock him in hindsight.

It's the beady soulless eyes on that creature. I feel like his gaze is pulling apart my spirit as he prepares to pull out and devour my still beating heart. /shudders

I am reminded of the guy a Decca Records, who told The Beatles' manager that "Groups of guitars are on the way out. You should stick to selling records in Liverpool."

or, how bout this doozie:
"The girl had no potential to write, and i refuse to publish the worthless filth to my dying day." -Anonymous publisher who was quoted after turning down the publishing of a little book known as the diary of anne frank.

Shows how much Bobby Kotick knows.

"that's pretty much it, save for a few one-off games like Blackthorne and The Lost Vikings."
Um, can I be the first to point out that Lost Vikings wasn't a one off game, it had a sequel that was made by Blizzard.

If Activision would've acquired Blizzard in that time guess what would happen? Thats right. Just like any other "major company bought small one" at those dark times Blizzard would've been just merged with activision entirely and there would never probably be world of Warcraft or anything "innovative" like that...or even if it was it would prolly be done by some "guys who now make guitar hero 145 while doing "WoW" in meantime".

Figuring out the difference between 7 billion and 7 million is not math, it's calculus :P

The sheer number of future Warren Buffets browsing this site never ceases to amaze me.
Next you guys will be telling me how you all bought Baby B's at rock bottom prices.
Don't know what Baby B's are?

Anyone can make the mistake this guy did.

Enjoy.
I hear that article goes good with a side order of Lil' K.T. and some race changes.
Bobby is easy to hate, but I'd wager the board of directors likes very much the bi-monthly statements he generates for the tables.
