The OverAchiever: 5 lucrative achievements

- They're an unusual means of making gold in a way people wouldn't necessarily expect, or:
- It would be almost impossible not to make a pile of gold while doing them.
Frostbitten
Hunting down a series of maddeningly elusive rare spawns will net you this achievement, a nice bit of lucre, and -- if you accidentally kill Loque'nahak while a hunter's camping her spawn elsewhere -- an enemy for life (try not to do this last part). Unlike their classic and Burning Crusade counterparts, who typically drop greens or blues of varying worth, each of the Northrend rare spawns drops gold, cloth, and a bag containing a potentially valuable blue BoE. Assuming you complete the entire achievement by killing all 23 rare spawns, you'll net 345g outright on the low end to 575g on the high end, in addition to whatever else you can make by auctioning the cloth and BoE's.
While hunting down rare spawns in Storm Peaks (and more particularly Vyragosa), you may even hit the motherlode and happen across the Time-Lost Proto Drake, who also drops a bronze proto-drake mount. While the Time-Lost isn't among the criteria for Frostbitten, the mount's certainly a nice incentive toward adding him to the kill list.
The addons NPCScan and SilverDragon are often used by players hellbent on getting Frostbitten finished (although both will require you to clear your Cache folder in the WoW subdirectory if you want to use the addon to find the mob again ingame). Rare Spawn Overlay can also be helpful, but unfortunately it hasn't been updated since June 2009.
100,000 Honorable Kills (or most variations thereof)
Put plainly, there are no immediate rewards for the honor you'll pile up from battleground wins and honorable kills. What makes the various Honorable Kill achievements lucrative is that all that honor you'll be getting from those kills can be converted into gems with Jewelcrafting Quartermasters available to both factions. The Alliance can visit Captain O'Neal in the Champions' Hall in Stormwind; the Horde can visit Lady Palanseer in the Hall of Legends in Orgrimmar.
Both will sell you all of the raw epic gems now available from Northrend (e.g. Cardinal Ruby, Majestic Zircon) at the steep price of 10,000 honor each. However, for anyone grinding honorable kills for the 100,000 Honorable Kills achievement (or anyone who just really likes battlegrounds), getting honor-capped while running out of ways to spend it is pretty routine, and converting honor into gems is a great side income while working towards your "of the Alliance" or "of the Horde" title. On my realm, it's usually possible to make 150-200 gold per raw gem on the auction house, and you're going to get honor-capped many times over while reaching the 25,000, 50,000, and 100,000 Honorable Kill achievements.
Loremaster of Northrend (Horde) and Loremaster of Northrend (Alliance)
With the introduction of the Dungeon Finder, it's become easier than ever to level solely in instances (it's how I've gotten a Restoration shaman from 71 to 79 with just a dungeon or two a day). If you so desire, leveling through dungeons means the entire array of wonderful Northrend quests can be done at 80, rewarding extra gold for your troubles rather than experience. I had saved all of Icecrown questing as a kind of lore treat for my main at 80 (and was not disappointed), and not only did I get the luxury of enjoying the quests' stories without the added pressure of leveling, but I was also rewarded with a nice little pile of gold for my troubles without the need to spend any of it at the class trainer.
Even if you level (or have leveled) mostly by conventional questing, it's still eminently possible to have an entire zone or more's worth of quests still available after you hit 80. You can easily maximize your profits by: a) using the Dungeon Finder to assist leveling, and: b) remaining in one zone until you've exhausted its offerings, and only then moving on to the next.
1000 Fish
Something odd happened in Wrath -- not only did fishing get cool, it also started paying (especially if you're an accomplished cook). The Well Fed buff is considered mandatory by min-maxing raiders (particularly by those miserable souls now occupied by Blood-Queen Lanathel..../shudder), and no small number of valuable foodstuffs come directly from Northrend waters. Now, while you can get 1,000 Fish quite easily by just parking yourself at any coastal byway and yanking up whatever unlucky fish happens along, I find that to be both exceptionally boring and a short-minded means of getting the achievement. There may be gold in that there fountain, but there's also an awful lot of it to be had elsewhere.
In general, there's a good market for Fish Feast materials (Musselback Sculpin from Borean Tundra, Glacial Salmon from Grizzly Hills, and Nettlefish from Sholazar Basin -- or all three from Wintergrasp), because it's a convenient mass raid buff but time-consuming for a single person to farm. Check your local AH to see what else is selling well, then fish accordingly. As always, El's Extreme Anglin' is a highly-recommended site for all your fishing needs.
40 Exalted Reputations
I'm not going to lie -- some reputation grinds (I'm looking at you, Shen'dralar and Darkmoon Faire) are very likely to cost you way more than you'll ever get back from them. But, taken as a whole, getting yourself "the Exalted" title is going to be a significant benefit to your coffers. The game doesn't care which reputations you get to exalted so long as you get 40 of them, and that means that a financially-astute player will cannily avoid the more costly among the grinds.
Most of the BC reps are linked to dungeons/heroics or dailies, and Wrath reputations can be done easily through the Dungeon Finder or dailies, so you can reasonably expect to make money from these. However, the most lucrative reputation-related achievements I've had so far have been:
- Hero of the Zandalar Tribe: Most classes can comfortably solo or duo Zul'Gurub at 80, and the place is a treasure trove of drops, rare profession materials, and bijous/coins that you can always sell on the auction house once you're exalted.
- The Argent Dawn: Save yourself some trouble and combine the reputation grind for the Argent Dawn with Stratholme runs for the Deathcharger's Reins. Hopefully, you'll see the mount drop within a reasonable period, but even if you don't you're likely to be swimming in runecloth, drops, and things like Pristine Black Diamonds on a really good run. If you already have the Baron mount, I found Scholomance to be better gold per hour.
- Steamwheedle Cartel: There's no independent achievement linked to the goblin cities, but you'll be running an awful lot of Dire Maul in order to get to exalted with all four. Not only does this put you within a stone's throw of the DIre Maul arena and within easy to range to check on the rare spawns there (Orbs of Deception still sell for a lot if you can manage to get a drop), but you should also be able to loot Knot Thimblejack's Cache nearly every run (barring those on which you've been massively unlucky with a key drop). The cache will give you a number of tailoring and leatherworking materials, and every so often you'll also get rare or epic patterns like Belt of the Archmage. The goblin reps were easily my most pleasant surprise while grinding to "the Exalted."

And thus begins the circle.
I'll reveal this tid-bit. Alliance pets sell for more on the Horde Server. Horde pets sell for more on the Alliance Server.
That's just common knowledge.
Doing so requires two accounts or a trustworthy friend to make the transfer on a nuetral AH.
And you take a chance that someone scouring the nuetral AH might snake the pets during the transfer, but if you time it right, and make the transactions during on off-peak time, say, early in the morning, you should be ok.
Now you sell two Alliance pets on the Horde AH. Then buy 3-4 Horde pets and transfer them to the Alliance side.
Rinse/Repeat.
In this sense, you don't even have to do the Argent Tournament dailies, just have the capitol to start the venture.
Personally, I'll stick to selling greens on my server as our economy is jacked up beyond reason.

/sigh Loque'nahak is a MALE.. the big version of him is the one you do quests for.. and IT.. is a SHE.
Paradoxy Jan 21st 2010 3:51PM
Loque'Nahak is a Female. Her flavor text reads "Sister of Scholozar" good try though.
Swifteye Jan 21st 2010 4:19PM
What? Loque's flavor text reads "Mate of Har'koa", and Har'koa is clearly referenced as a she (many references to being a *mother* in particular) during her quest lines. So unless Har'koa is gay and can somehow be impregnated by another female, Loque is a male.
Leejin Jan 21st 2010 4:23PM
Where is this flavor text at? All's I can find is a ton of comments on Wowhead saying Loque is a he, and Har'koa is the female is Zul'drak.
Oh, and this from the actual in game quest text.. "Har'koa has asked you to collect 7 Blood of Mam'toth. Return them to her at the Altar of Har'koa. "
Do they play scissors or somethin?
Swifteye Jan 21st 2010 4:30PM
Just check the WoWHead link for Loque that was posted in the article; he has as his title beneath his actual name (y'know, like Thrym is and Durn is ... sorry, just trying to think of mobs that everybody has seen and will go "oh yeah, so THAT's flavor text").
I was trying to agree with you, Leejin; I just couldn't respond to Paradoxy's comment directly because it itself was a reply rather than a standalone comment.
Swifteye Jan 21st 2010 4:33PM
Consarnit... I meant to say he is "Mate of Har'koa" as Thrym is "The Hope Ender" and Durn is "Son of Gruul"... I forgot that wow.com's #%$&ing comment system eats text if it has the little arrow markers/angled-parentheses-bracket-thingies anywhere near it.
Leejin Jan 21st 2010 5:27PM
Yes, I was also agreeing with you Swifteye (Highfive*)... I don't argue much, but eff me, I KNEW I was right.. haha.. Thanks man.
Paradoxy, I was just correcting the article.. thanks for having such a wise @$$ attitude about it though.
slythwolf Jan 22nd 2010 2:33AM
@Paradoxy, even if I didn't A) already know that Loque'nahak is Har'koa's mate and B) have the capability to mouse over the link and read the hover text, I would still not believe your assertion. Why?
Because you can't spell Sholazar.
Rob Jan 21st 2010 2:50PM
Don't forget the "World Event" Achievements.
"Trick or Treat" Achievement from Hallow's End:
Visit every Candy Bucket. Each Candy Bucket pays 6g 63s. There are 47 buckets (for Horde) which amounts to 311g 61s at Level 80.
If you're below 80, it's a great way to Level as each bucket pays a significant amount of XP (for just showing up).

The addon Silver Dragon does NOT require any kind of a cache folder reset to work. It will locate and alert you to any rare spawn in the game every time you come across one regardless how many times you have seen a particular one before.
Gemini Jan 21st 2010 3:36PM
Actually it does, if you want the best scanning range. It can only pick up the mob once from the cache. After that, it relies on finding the npc's nameplate, or mousing over/targeting it.
Quidamtyra Jan 21st 2010 2:58PM
_NPCScan.Overlay found on Curse.com is up to date with all the Northrend Rare Mobs
Evaline Jan 21st 2010 3:11PM
Small detail that you mixed up: when you kill a rare, the bag it drops doesn't contain the blue BoE, that simply drops off the mob itself alongside the bag. The bag contains gold, cloth and/or some crystallized stuff.
The most farmable rares seem to be in the lower level zones. Rares in Icecrown, Sholazar and Storm Peaks tend to get killed very fast after they spawn in my experience, due to more people flying around doing dailies/mining or herbing/going to raids etc.
Also, one rare can be seen all the way from Dalaran or at the Argent Tournament Grounds; Putridus the Ancient. If you're idling in Dalaran NPCScan can pick him up the second he spawns.
Mork Jan 21st 2010 3:19PM
Might want to throw in the BC loremaster achievement as well. If you haven't finished that and go back, oddly enough the random crap you get while questing sells for a decent amount on most AH's. While it's small bit at a time you still make a pretty penny. For example I had about25 quests left in Netherstorm and decided to go back and do them. After selling all the netherweave and random mining mats I got along the way (OMG at BC mining prices) I netted about 750g in what effectively took me under 2 hours to complete. I would assume it holds true for other zones as well.
Firecrow Jan 21st 2010 3:38PM
Agreed. I've been working on this achievement recently, and not only do you get about 5g per quest, but as a tailor, I'm making netherweave bags from all the cloth I'm picking up and placing them on the AH.
tgrhwke Jan 21st 2010 3:55PM
@ Gemini: I have never needed to reset the addon in any way and I have still had the notification pop up when ever I have come within 90 yards of a spawn, whether I am on the ground or in the air on a flying mount.
It will even alert on the corpse of a recently killed spawn that has not yet faded away, which can bring a moment of disappointment when it is something such as Time-Lost Proto Drake.
Tvan Jan 21st 2010 5:33PM
I've had the 40 reputation achievement for a while, but I just got Exalted with Steamweedle Cartel today. This leaves me with lockboxes to farm for Ravenholdt and more decks to turn in for Darkmoon Faire before I am truly insane.
clundgren Jan 21st 2010 5:21PM
"Of the Horde" is my favorite title, simply because I never see anyone else with it. It's kinda nice to be the only one around, and I get a lot of tells asking how to get it. They are always disappointed when I tell them.
Only 2 more achievements until I get "Battlemaster", though, so that'll probably be my new title for a while.
Leejin Jan 21st 2010 5:26PM
Yes, I was also agreeing with you Swifteye (Highfive*)... I don't argue much, but eff me, I KNEW I was right.. haha.. Thanks man.
