It's because the community doesn't uphold a higher standard, that we've sunk to the low we're at. You seem to be saying "If it's not directed at you, just ignore it", but that response may be part of the problem rather than part of a solution.

I don't appreciate people dropping the f-bomb in public IRL (to get away from the "rape" example), or using profanity like it's punctuation. It's not acceptable there, and I don't see any reason it should be accepted in-game either. Turning a deaf-ear to it is giving your assent.
