Phat Loot Phriday: Cryptmaker

I've had a number of requests for caster DPS staves lately, so I decided to highlight Cryptmaker, which isn't actually a caster DPS staff at all so I have no idea why I chose this particular intro. Rather than dwell on it, let's move on with our lives.
Name: Cryptmaker
Type: Two-Handed Mace
Damage: 848 - 1273 Damage, 294.6 DPS (938 - 1407 Damage, 325.7 DPS)
Speed: 3.60
Attributes:

Speed: 3.60
Attributes:
- 169 Strength
- 185 Stamina
- One red socket and one blue socket
- Improves hit rating by 95
- Increases your armor penetration rating by 100
- 185 Strength

- Increases your armor penetration rating by 115.
Cryptmaker's hit rating makes it a great death knight tanking weapon, though many still prefer the expertise of Ramaladni's Blade of Culling.
Edit: The viking warrior Matthew Rossi also informs me Cryptmaker is one of the best offhand weapons available to fury warriors. There ya go!
How to Get It: Take down the Blood Princes in the Crimson Halls and pray to the lords of loot that it appears on Prince Valanar's corpse. The official Armory sets the drop rate for this item to Medium, which is a 25-50% chance.
Getting Rid of It: As mentioned, it's on some feral druid best in slot lists. If you're a cat druid with this, you might not be getting rid of it at all if you end up with the heroic version, it'll be staying with you until Cataclysm. Warriors, paladins and death knights can use this but would be better off with Bryntroll, Shadow's Edge, or the legendary Shadowmourne.
Additional Information: As is always the case with high end items like this, you'll find plenty of discussion and theorycrafting about it over on Elitist Jerks. Register, do a search, and get reading. Remember to read and follow their rules before posting. If Elitist Jerks isn't your sort of place, the comments section on Wowhead has some active discussion as well.

good yes
BiS for every single feral dps out there - NO
depends a bundle on:
whether you're talking the heroic version or normal
available buffs, debuffs
previous gear
how much ICC25 gear you've got
crit cap issues
ArPen soft/hardcap issues

Cb, clearly they aren't satisfied by your answer.
Coldbear's post is not a bad one but it is lacking numbers. CB tries very hard to min/max everything he can based on buffs from the raid. That being said it's possible that there might be too much of a stat on here for you to make it worthwhile, but all in all this is a fantastic mace.

Since the blanket proc nerf, this is better than Bryntroll for DKs.

Yellow socket?
Netheral Jan 22nd 2010 8:11PM
No wait, nevermind, I'm an idiot. >_

This is not a caster DPS staff.
Niallus Jan 22nd 2010 8:17PM
Don't report anything, he might get in trouble.

I love you, Niallus.

I've been playing a feral druid for about 3+ years now as my main, bear in BC, cat in Wrath. So with that I ask: How is this BiS for a cat druid?! Theres ZERO agility on that mace, possibly the most important stat for a cat. Str is essentially a wasted stat on us as anything it offers us is offered better with agility. Honestly if I saw a cat bid on this I may in fact slap them. Whatever lists you saw this as the BiS for kitties needs to stop making webpages or at the very least BiS lists for Feral druids.
It is possible that they meant this to be BiS for bears, but even then I'm not so sure about that. Once again whatever str has to offer us Ferals, agility does it ten times better. For cats we get increased crit (one of our main stats) and attack power, for bears we get increased attack power and dodge (another main stat for bear tanking). But this mace is definetly for warriors or DK's, possibly even BiS, definetly not a good mace for Ferals though.

With ferals approaching the white hit cap and the huge lack of hit on things, this becomes better than it would back in t8 times. Str starts beating agi at higher levels of arpen too. Mostly it's the high value of arpen plus the devaluation of crit that makes this good.
It isn't bis like coldbear said, but it is well up there and is great if you're looking to cap arpen

Bloodfall (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=50178) is what I'm currently hoping for on my cat druid.

Actually, Strength is never that far behind Agility (until 3.1, every feral socketed Str) so until Cataclysm, when we will most likely be brought in line with rogues and enhancers and receive only 1 AP per point of Str, those 2H Maces will still be interesting to us, not just because of the raw DPS, of course a tad less so that Agi 2Hs.

Good geared kitties are reaching the crit cap for white hits with ICC gear, and agility on items starts to get partially wasted.
"Str is essentially a wasted stat on us as anything it offers us is offered better with agility."
Incorrect, Str actually gives more Ap than Agi. Kitties were actually gemming it before the Ulduar patch, how can you forget that?
Cryptmaker has both Arp and Hit, dps ferals will be aiming for the Arp hardcap so that's pretty sweet, and our T10 has zero hit and that makes this weapon even more desirable.
For a feral of 3 years, you certainly seem to have some holes in your class knowledge.
Matthew Rossi Jan 22nd 2010 11:06PM
Feel free to pass on it to arms/fury warriors then. We'll happily give it a home.
Evilmerc100 Jan 23rd 2010 2:43AM
Also, currently, Agility does nothing to affect AP for bears. Only strength and AP on the weapon will do this

This is hunter loot.

I have 3 years as feral too, and I'm a kitty since wrath started. Since wrath, kitties began to shine. What I mean is, things have changed for us, you can't keep thinking as a feral from 3 years ago.
About 400 - 500 ArPen, AGI becomes a wasted stat, only getting better if you can reach the ArPen hard cap wich is about 1400 ArPen. STR give us 2.3 AP for each point, AGI gives us 1.3 AP if I'm not mistaken. About 75% Crit we start to get more and more near the crit cap for white damage from gear only, wich also makes AGI a wasted stat.
With all that said, ICC gear easily gives us those numbers, and If you really have the opportunity to get to roll (or spend dkp) for this weapon, wich means that you are a raider, you probably have some pieces of ICC gear already (or are aiming to have).
Long story short, STR and ArPen are better than AGI when you are near your caps with high level gear.
Nathanyel Jan 22nd 2010 9:02PM
Sure, this weapon is nice, but even when far below the hit cap, Distant Land remains BiS for cats (in the 264 bracket)

Dawwww, poor JR feels unloved.
Quick, someone set us up with a caster stave next week and a box of kittens, stat!
