New columnists announcement and call for shaman columnist round 2
Hundreds and hundreds of applications later, we have selected (most of) our newest columnists. It was quite difficult to choose among the top entries and we want to thank all of you who applied. Your enthusiasm for both the game and our site was truly awe-inspiring.
Now, on to the new hires. As you will see below, some things changed during the application review process. There was much debate over the final choices, and we think the new writers we are bringing on are the best of the best.
Legal Columnist: We've decided to add a legal columnist to WoW.com, covering various aspects of the law as it relates to WoW and online gaming. Amy Schley, a third year law student at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, will be joining our staff and provide her insights in the area once a week. Additionally, expect Amy to weigh on hot button legal issues as they come about, like the recent string of arrests made through WoW.
Paladin: When we put out the call for a holy paladin writer, we were approached by our rogue columnist, Chase Christian. He has been raiding as a holy paladin for quite some time and wanted to know if we would consider him for the new column. We asked him to submit an application and compared it to all the others we received for the position. He rocked it. Chase will continue with the rogue weekly column and will be starting The Light And How To Swing It - holy paladin edition next week. Gregg Reece will continue to cover retribution and protection paldin topics on a weekly basis, but will be posting his column on Thursdays instead of the weekend.
Shaman: Turns out asking for an odd spec combination didn't work out for us. We were hoping to find someone who could cover both restoration and enhancement for us, but, while we received applications that attempted one or the other, we weren't hugely impressed with any that attempted both. We were very impressed with one particular enhancement shaman application. We couldn't pass up on Rich Maloy aka Stoneybaby from Big Hit Box and so we decided to hire him to focus purely on enhancement shaman.
Unfortunately, we didn't see any equally stand-out resto apps -- so we're still looking for a resto shaman. We feel that many good candidates probably did not apply due to the requirement of being an expert on the enhancement tree. Now that we are going to have three separate weekly shaman columns, we are now accepting applications for pure resto shaman. You have until Sunday, January 31, 2010 to apply. Details on our LFM page. If you've already applied once, you are welcome to reapply.
More writer selections after the jump!
Druid: You may not know the name Tyler Caraway, but any moonkin who has ever read the official class boards will know his forum handle. Yes, boys and girls, we hired Murmurs! Tyler has been the voice of balance druids on the official forums since vanilla WoW and we are very proud to bring him on to write about our feathery friends. As you may recall, we originally put out the call for a combo resto/balance druid writer. However, we couldn't pass up on Tyler and so Allison Robert, who currently plays a resto/feral dual spec, will continue to cover both topics.
AddOn: Writing about AddOns is tricky business. You need to take something dry and technical and transform it into something accessible and entertaining to read. And no one approached it with more enthusiasm and flair than Mathew McCurley. Once he gets AddOn Spotlight back on track, he'll be tackling Reader UI of the Week and few more of the crazier ideas he had.
Lore: Lore applications are still being discussed. We will have a decision soon (tm).
With the exception of Chase, all the new writers will take 2-3 weeks before they will start writing for the site. Once we get them contracted and set-up in our system, expect to see their work for yourself.

Yay! A holy paladin writer! Can't wait for Chase to get started! :D

I am pleased to know there will be a raiding Holy Paladin writing for the site regularly. Holy Pal has been my main since I started playing WoW, and I have been seriously disappointed with most of our representation among the various blogs. Most are written by folks who aren't serious raiders, or are more focused on other paladin specs, and they also happen to talk about Holy. I look forward to reading this new author's work!

Great to have one yeah :-). I'm currently leveling a holydin (yes i solo too as holy, yes i'm machochistic) and would love to know some more about gear choiches (spirit/MP5, int/SP) and hope we will get some of that soon :-)

Though I don't play a rogue i've always enjoyed reading Encrypted Text, so now I guess i'm going to be schooled up on holy paladins as well now.

Grats to Chris, Tyler, Matt, and Rich for your victories! Still a big open field for Lore Columnists apparently, so good luck to you all as well! I am your competition.
My only question about the application is that if you left out an area, would it immediatly be nulled? If so then I guess I'm out of the following.
Adam Holisky Jan 25th 2010 3:33PM
I'm a little confused by your question, can you explain a little more about what you're asking?
Aftermathmatical Jan 25th 2010 3:55PM
He is asking that if you skipped section, would your app be disqualified.
I don't know what WoW.com does personally, but I bet everything should be filled in with something at least.
Adam Holisky Jan 25th 2010 3:57PM
As with all jobs, incomplete applications negatively affect the review of the applicant.
Meethan Jan 25th 2010 5:04PM
Yes. Thank you for the clarification. I would resend it but it's a bit late now. Again thanks.

With the lore columnist, I'm just curious as I have been a huge Warcraft lore fan since playing Orc and Humans with my mate across town on our 33k modem - However, I'm not a fan of the expanded universe stuff in some of the books and comics (As a beginner filmmaker, I'm annoyed at the recent popularity of these, as I view 'official' expanded universe stuff that isn't just extra flavour a failing of the core media). I'm guessing that a potential columnist would have to be familiar with these.

@ Felix
You would be correct, it has been stated that comics and books are official sources of lore and King Varian Wrynn is the poster boy for that sort of thing. Wrynn appears as a footnote in the lore for WarCraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal (In fact they decided they misspelled his name as Varien and later retconned it to infer he was named after his mother Queen Varia).
Blizzard used the comic to tell his story from birth to reclaiming the throne and all we get as in-game lore is the Missing Diplomat questline, an NPC that was removed when Ahn'Quiraj came out and then poof, beastly man-king in Stormwind harbor as we got ready for Wrath of the Lich King.
Wrynn isn't the only one fleshed out in alternative media. Thrall's story comes to life and Arthas' story both improve by leaps and bounds thanks to books. And lets not forget Rhonin Redhair and Kraus' installation as major lore figure through novels.

Question...whatever happened to the column where we were choosing the quests for the gnome?
Next question - most of the columns here are geared for high-level characters, end-game content, raids and whatnot. With the exception of WoW Rookie (most of the time), there isn't anything for helping out a new character.
People who have never played the game are still starting up WoW for the first time (I know this to be true as a friend of mine just started playing), and I think that the heavy emphasis on your buffed-up Tier 10 shadow priest and how best to take on Plagueworks may be a bit off-putting for them.
Why not something for those who like to take it slower and explore a bit? Or something for low- to mid-level characters and what they can expect?
Just wondering aloud, I guess.
Mecivious Jan 25th 2010 3:32PM
Not speaking for the other classes, but several of the most recent Paladin articles have been targeted at lower level characters (primarily tanks).
I think the number of people looking for "end-game" articles greatly outweighs the other readers. At this point, even those who play this game at a slower pace find themselves leveling up towards end-game faster and faster.
Bronwyn Jan 25th 2010 3:36PM
I think the hard part about that is that most of the time, you write it once and there's no point posting anything else after, you know? The WoW Rookie columns really about cover it, imo. Something for newbies is really better as a static reference than a weekly column.

I see a lot of people asking about Turpen the gnome warlock, recently:
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Cenarion+Circle&cn=Turpen
Poor little guy never even made it to Outland. I think all the Cataclysm and new patch information started pouring in around that time and took precedence. He just never went back to the column after that.
I wish the adventures of Turpen had gone a slightly different direction anyway. Too many people were voting for old standbys. I wanted to see him forced to level some unusual race/class/spec/profession combo, but he ended up pretty cookie-cutter. Maybe I'm just more sadistic than the other voters...
I also would have appreciated even more options for us to affect. Which centaur clan should I grind? Which Mountain Dew flavor should I drink while doing dungeons? Could even have used the first comment sections to determine which server to play on, what the character name would be, etc.
I hope they bring this idea back starting from scratch on a slightly larger scale. Maybe even with funny montage videos showing some of the funnier aspects of learning a new class and being told what to do by a bunch of internet commenters. :D
If he doesn't want to do it...hire me as a temp and I'll totally go for it. *wink, nudge, wink*
mcdingo Jan 25th 2010 6:53PM
I agree, I applied for lore. Most of the applications in the lore were about Current of future lore. I like the passed lore from Vanilla wow. I recommend some posts about epic lv 30-40 quest chains. Alliance relations anyone? Stuff people can do if they enjoy leveling slowly and want to get lost in the story.
whalt Jan 25th 2010 3:30PM
Would be nice to have a Ret pally writer that did more provide a link to gear that drops in instances. I realize this isn't a place for super in-depth analysis but I haven't read anything that was more than a gear list or summation of Ret Pally nerfs/buffs from patch notes since the "Gearing your Ret Paladin for Karazhan guide"
Adam Holisky Jan 25th 2010 3:32PM
More ret paladin analysis will be coming in future columns.
Namus Jan 25th 2010 9:08PM
Get one of the Ferarros and we're G2G hehehe.
TimothyCathcart Jan 25th 2010 3:37PM
Of course the lore columnist hasn't been decided yet, you just have to keep me waiting don't you! Well, I suppose I can hold my breath for another week or so.
