Breakfast Topic: What really happens during maintenance?

Goblins and gnomes are using refitted shredders to sweep the streets and repaint the buildings. Mankrik's wife has stopped playing dead for a little while and is grabbing a bite to eat with her husband. The stormforged dwarves are hard at work forging more drops for the raids that have reset. The streets of Orgrimmar are empty with tumbleweeds blowing down the streets and an old orc in a rocking chair is playing the theme to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly on an old harmonica (the music was in the tumbleweed's contract).
What do you think the World of Warcraft does while we're temporarily forced offline?

Ever notice sometimes when you fly in somewhere , none of the NPCs are moving. The minute you land and head to them they all suddenly start moving?
I think its just all the NPCs standing around waiting for us to show up so they can hand us crappy quests and laugh while we're out running around doing them.
Nesingwary: First I told her 30 clefthoof, then 30 of those talbuk. Then when she came back , I sent her after 30 DIFFERENT clefthoof and talbuk. When she came back again , I sent her after the big ones. I haven't seen her since, I think she got the hint.

There is this ginormous black hole that consumes all of wow, and everyone goes link dead, kinda like in avatar. And then they wake up in a pre-nuclear fallout erra, 2010, and find out they each have lives that they have to live. 10 years later, after the nuclear fall out happens the avatars will go link dead for good, and wake up to see that they are the only survivors on this other world. Guilds have members spread out accross this world in mayhem and war. People set out to find guild mates in this other world with little hope of success as the world is reoganized into the guilds of WOW....
I guess after visiting this other world multiple times due to the black hole eating all of the map in wow, re-organizing the world into the guilds of wow would only be natural...

No this is waht Happens on server downtime. Arthas and Anub group up to got to the Arena in STV, When they get there they see Rag and Ony in a group, they also see Jania and Varain, and Thrall and Garosh. They wait at the arena and do nothin untill 9am. Then at 9 the goblin drops the chest. All hell breaks loose. In the end Jania and Varian end up being the only ones living. Before Varian opens the chest Jania sheeps him and starts to open the the chest. Once she is almost done Arthas puts his hand on her sholder and she gives Arthas the loot. They duel Jania gets to 1 hp as every1 else is running back and drops to her knees in defeat.

I imagine Stormwind to be like Disney World after the park closes. The house lights come on and an army of cleaners and maintenance works appear out of the wood work. The streets are swept and the waste bins emptied of their rubbish. Catering trucks deliver new stock to replenish the inns' supplies of honeymint tea and other beverages. Work crews replace bulbs in street lights and swap out malfunctioning animatronic critters with new units. The NPC's change out of their costumes and drive home to talk about their day with their family.

Hogger stands in front of a mirror psyching himself up
"Who's the Gnoll, you're the Gnoll, you're the master of the charge!, the leader of your race, you cut through adventurer's like they were nothing, you hack, you slash, you're undefeated and will remain so."
He actually has some serious self-confidence issues, poor Hogger.

WORST TIMING EVER.
I was about to buy epic flight training for the very first time, exalted with warsong offensive, 4k gold and reins of the blue drake sitting in my backpack. I grinded through ALL the quests in storm peaks for the money and got the achievement last night then I ported to org this morning and the zeppelin got back 15 seconds before server shutdown. FML

My answer to the article's question is: Gnomes use their ingenious minds to think of new ways to annoy me. Server maintenance is the only time they're safe from my wrath!!! :P
slythwolf Jan 26th 2010 12:27PM
This gnome was safe from you already. Catch me if you can: I already have epic flying.

I think it'd be totally sweet if street-sweepers and such prowled the roads just before and after a server reset!

Asking what happens during downtime is like asking "If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, what sound does it make?"
But nonetheless, I have a theory that this is when the GMs actually get to have fun with their extraordinary powers within the game. They totally destroy the game worlds in every server with extreme prejudice, then reboot them when the party dies down and decimating Murloc coasts with zombie plague, and playing catch with Dalaran loses its appeal.
