WoW Moviewatch: Still Alive -- JoCo version
Well, being the geek savant that he is, Jonathan Coulton covered Still Alive. Being the WoW culture savant that he is, Spiff took JoCo's cover and turned it into a World of Warcraft machinima. (There are plenty of references to the original Portal game in the video, though, so this version isn't entirely detached from its roots.)
Like all of Spiff's videos, Still Alive -- JoCo version is a lot of fun. Spiff does a great job capturing the fun and humor of JoCo's original music. Not to mention, his animation skills are constantly growing and always impressive.
Edit: JoCo wrote the original song, mind you. Still Alive was performed at the end of the game by a female artist. This song, then, is the version performed by JoCo. "Cover" is a tough word to use for this, so I wanted to clarify it.

Is it really a cover when the original artist performs his own song? :)

This. Do some basic research before putting up a story, people! Please! Jonathan Coulton WROTE "Still Alive". It was voiced by Ellen McLain during the end credits. He performs it all the time, because IT'S HIS SONG.

Just wanted to say that I went to his website and downloaded ALL of his songs. The fact that he wrote 'still alive' is icing on the cake. Thanks wow.com for introducing me to my new obsession (Jonathan Coulton).

@meatwadz: Don't play "First of May" at work. ;)

Thanks for the tip ;)

I thought Jonathan Coulton wrote Still Alive for Valve?
Carr0t Jan 26th 2010 12:04PM
I don't think you can really say JoCo 'Covered' Still Alive, when it was him who wrote the original song for the ending of Portal. He just wasn't the one who did the voice of GLaDOS, and thus didn't sing it.
Carr0t Jan 26th 2010 12:05PM
3rd post to say the same thing? Now I feel like a fool. Bah :P
Any more for any more?

Yep JoCo wrote it, and Ive seen him perform it with Felicia Day. Nerdcore power!
GoldenWyvern Jan 26th 2010 12:06PM
It's just too bad nobody else noticed this error as well. :)

The real gem here is the cover of Sir Mixxalot - Baby Got Back at the end/credits.. hahaha

Portal is amazing and witty, and if you haven't played it yet you're missing out. :)
inb4 the cake is a lie, it's annoyingly old right now (worse so when people who haven't played Portal use it D:).
I liked the video, but the song really suited for it. The lyrics conflict too much with what's going on, and I find it hard to suspend my disbelief.
Eddy Jan 26th 2010 1:26PM
I feel like your 'in before the cake is a lie' is really your attempt to comment the following:
The cake is a lie!
without being one of those people you're talking about. If it was that annoyingly old, no one would have felt the need to bring it up, you included. ^^

I love portal.
Khremloc Jan 26th 2010 2:29PM
Or, y'know Eddy, maybe I just felt like predicting the inevitable.
metrocake Jan 27th 2010 12:50PM
Excuse me -- the Cake is NOT a lie! :D I'm real, I am!
Crianas Jan 26th 2010 12:15PM
Oh, Michael Gray. Your geek cred just fell off of Outland.

I'm fairly sure this is the one song JoCo can't and hasn't released under a Creative Commons license, making this video technically illegal.
GoldenWyvern Jan 26th 2010 1:11PM
Correct - it was licensed by Valve for Portal, so any use outside of the game requires Valve's permission.
Ominous bum ba bum.
Drakkenfyre Jan 26th 2010 1:53PM
But, Valve being Valve, probably won't care.
They are the company that released models and assets from Team Fortress 2 for people to create maps and machinma with.
In fact, they take some of the best community maps, and with permissions of their creators, put them in official patch releases.
