The making of the Gunship Battle encounter

I've gone on record before saying that this is one of Blizzard's best and most unique fights, and it's particularly fun if you're part of the "away team" making the jumps to and from the enemy ship. That really nails the "controlled chaos" angle they were aiming for. If you're part of the "home team" defending your own ship, I'll grant that the fight feels a little more by-the-numbers. Oddly enough, this is one of the few encounters where the achievement version (I'm On A Boat) actually makes it less engaging, as most raids assign static teams to the ships and either kite Saurfang/Bronzebeard or swap taunts. However, if you've already got the achievement or just aren't worrying about it for the moment, all the joys of a personal explosives pack are yours for the taking.
If you're not part of a raiding guild but get a shot at doing ICC, go for it; the first two bosses aren't too tough, and the gunship battle is an absolute hoot.

Put in 2 zeppelins and a massive load of lag and you got a gunship encounter.
apart from the horrendous lag it's indeed a pretty fun encounter.
Hivetyrant Jan 27th 2010 6:41PM
I have never experianced this lag you speak of.
Which realm are you on?
Reps Jan 27th 2010 7:12PM
Yeah, I've done this every week since it was released on both 10 and 25 man, and the only lag I've ever had was general server lag on Tuesdays from the high traffic.

Just did it for the first time today, and I was tanking the adds on the Skybreaker... (I'm Alliance) and it seemed really easy. Either the damage is low, the rockets are too slow, or we're awesome...
Probably the second one.

It's a very easy encounter. Even the achievement is easy, at least on 10-man.

I do love the Gunship Battle, but unfortunately I've found that on 25-man, it's an absolute disconnect lottery, with our raid usually losing 5+ members to disconnects, and many of them unable to get back in (just chain disconnecting as soon as they log back in, until the fight is over).
Luckily it is tuned softly enough to be quite easy still even with only 20 or so raiders.
And nothing beats the hilarity of jumping over to the other ship just as it hits 0 health and the fight ends. "Guys? Guys? Can I get a summon? Please?"
Reps Jan 27th 2010 7:17PM
I imagine this is an issue confined to a few servers. The vast majority of people I talk to have never experienced lag or disconnect issues on this fight. I know there are issues with the FL fight in Ulduar on a few select servers where there is around 2k latency until the mobs up to the boss have been killed. This is probably another vehicle problem specific to 3 or 4 servers.

I agree. The lag is horrific during this encounter on Stormreaver. We are often able to get through it, but have random spam heals going out across the raid that catch up 10-15seconds later. Not fun. We honestly all click the Report Lag button each and every time it happens, but we know Stormreaver has been plagued by this junk since Vanilla.

When we got [On a Boat] we actually had everyone go over once, making it something of a cannon dps race. >.> I guess we always gotta do things the hard way huh.

Unless you're a resto-druid. Why do we get rocket bears but no rocket trees. I'm consigned to stay on defense because of this. Boooooo.

Really? The way I've been doing it is that the "away team" jumps over just as the Mage spawns, then jumps back the second it's dead, to let Saurfang's stacks fall off.

I posted in The Queue section, but it probably wasn't the right place. Take a good look at the screenshot of Zafod Boombox on page 4.

As a process freak, I always enjoy making-of presentations. Here's to more!

Question, the Goblin picture on the 4th page uses the Clysm model, not the current Goblin model, is that reflected ingame? Doesn't really matter, just curious.

I hate to disagree, but this is the "Chess Event" of ICC. Its brainless, boring, and ridiculously easy - to the point of I have never seen a group fail. Very poor design and implementation, in my opinion. There are more deaths in the steam spray than on the boat.

I have a feeling that the hard mode of the encounter will put us in our place. Right now, so long as you knock out the enemy mages (and stay alive on your home ship) your outgoing damage will easily stay ahead of the damage received from the other ship. Tweak the balance a little here, a little there, and we could be looking at throwing out our current strategies, starting from scratch, and really having to figure out how to control the various types of enemies in the battle.

I hate this fight. As a healer, I find there's nothing of the supposed 'excitement' or 'chaos' as described in the making-of. Basically we have to heal some tank that is just a bit too far away (on the other ship) and another tank on your own boat, along with some light random raid damage. And sometimes you have to move from rockets.
And it just keeps going on and on and on. For healers at least, it has no interesting mechanics, and takes far too long. I occasionally use my rockets to join the tank out of boredom.
SamLowry Jan 28th 2010 9:52AM
So when are we going to see a LFR tool? If you're in a tiny guild (family & friends) your chances of seeing the inside of a raid are pretty tiny, especially if all the random raid recruiters are GearScore fascists who don't think 5k is good enough...raising the question of how you're supposed to raise that GS above 5k if you can't get into a raid.

3 words... Druid away tank... whoever decided on the jetpack placement for druid tanks has a very twisted sense of humor. Overall, fun fight. Yes, it is a bit of a "loot piƱata", but each of the raids has had one so far. The big thing is (at least from a tank or dps perspective), you get something new and different (and unlike Flame Leviathan) fun! Half the time our raiders are busy jet packing out of the way of rockets rather than running, or seeing what bizarre spots they can get themselves into. This really adds a little flavor and pace break up a bit. Give me a lighthearted encounter before something more challenging any day. :)

I raid as boomkin & this fight contains all I hate about raid fights.
I never have a target to focus on, there are never enough adds to make hurricane 'really' worth it and I can never stand still long enough to get through my rotation.
Most raid encounters have something in them that is great/terrible for one fighting style or another. This one has all the bad ones for balance.
Add to this that getting in the guns breaks my ui (yeah, I'm sure it's due to addons I have installed) and I have to exit the game to fix it...
I'm glad other people like it, I don't need to love everything in this game. I just find it amusing how many people are so ga-ga over it.
