The Queue: Pony games
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky will be your host today.
The above is a screenshot from Free Realms. Dancing ponies are not exactly my thing, but god knows we've talked about them enough. So I think after this screenshot, I'm never going to ask for a pony again. Forget it.
Instead I'll be asking Ghostcrawler for a moose. I encourage you all to as well.
Ghostcrawler promised me a moose.
Eddy asked...
"Can you lose achievements? I just got the Loremaster of EK and Kalimdor achievements and I keep reading things on Wowhead about how such and such quest used to count, how people's quest count changed... and I'm a little anxious about them. If Blizzard changes whether, say, a particular quest counts for EK or Kalimdor and messes up my totals, would the achievement disappear?"
Right now, once you have an achievement you have it for good. I don't anticipate Blizzard changing their stance on this anytime soon. However the idea of permutable achievements does sound cool -- think if the guild with the most players online at any one time all got the title "of the Crowded," or the player online with the most non-buffed HP got "the Tank." But those are not necessarily achievements as much as titles (much like the current arena titles are implemented).
Either way, for now -- you're safe. No chance of having an achievement removed by normal gameplay means.
Sprinte asked...
"Why did the Lich King never launch a counteroffensive against the Horde and Alliance? He seems to have been on the defensive the entire expansion. A friendly visit to Dalaran could have been great fun. Think of the chaos!"
Who says he's not going to go to Dalaran? Maybe he'll meet up with Jaina and some undead form of Kael'thas and they'll all sit around and pine about how they hate and love each other. I won't continue where this story goes... but what I'm trying to say (for real) is that we don't know that Arthas is done yet.
As for him being on the defensive most of the expansion, we can assume that's because he's had the problems at the Wrathgate, as well as the major offensive he had prior to Wrath's release. That's a lot to happen to any nation state (even a terrorist one like Arthas'), so I don't think anyone should be too surprised nothing has happened yet.
Besides, there's a Cataclysm on the horizon...
And Shade? You win one internets today. Congrats!
Tim asked...
"Does Blizzard hate trolls? We have plenty if backstory, which I am thankful for. It's just that players kill so many of them in the game. Who knows how many troll themed instances there are? I know I don't. It seems Blizzard wants us to enjoy killing them."
No, Blizzard doesn't hate trolls. They also have you kill tons of humans, elves, and other creatures. They don't have you kill enough gnomes however. Clearly Blizzard loves gnomes.
Kyrro asked...
"Does weaponskill have any effect to casters? Would I do better with 400 skillpoints staves than 1 skillpoint in staves?"
Nope. The only thing weapon skills will reward you with is an achievement. Although if you are a caster and can use a wand, I suggest having that skill be maxed. You never know when you'll want to play with your wand...

So, Forsaken were folks who fel in battle against the Scourge, and were raised as undead. They were then freed from the Lich King's grip (by Sylvanas) to go live their unlives...
Only to fall in battle against the Scourge, and were raised as (un-undead) Death Knights. They were then freed from the Lich King's grip (at Light's Hope Chapel) to go live their un-unlives...
Only to fall in battle against the Scourge in Icecrown, and be raised as part of the Scourge's (un-un-undead) army? I have that right, yeah? Or am I thinking too much?

I've been playing a DPS Death Knight, but the difference between tank and DPS armor is very confusing to me. What's the difference? If I want to DPS, what sort of armor should I go for? My main is a Warlock, so I'm not accustomed to these problems.
Phil Jan 27th 2010 11:43AM
If you see plate armor with defense on it, and you want to DPS, that armor is not for you.
That's pretty much it.
SpaceGoatPriest Jan 27th 2010 11:45AM
Tank armor/gear will have "tanky" stats on it like dodge, parry, defense. They would also have a higher amount of stamina they comparable DPS gear.
macster Jan 27th 2010 11:48AM
Tank plate will usually:-
Have a lot more STA than Strength.
Some or all of: defence, dodge, parry, shield block (which you don't need as a DK).
DPS plate will usually -
Have more Strength, and probably some agility.
Some or all of: crit, armor pen, haste, attackpower
Both types will have hit and expertise.
Cyrus Jan 27th 2010 11:50AM
Seriously? Well, there are all kinds of places to look for information; this is a good place to start: http://www.wowwiki.com/Tanking.
Very brief advice: the difference between tanking and dps is that when tanking you don't care so much about how much damage you do, but you want mobs to be attacking you all the time. So you use abilities that generate extra aggro as much as possible, which for a DK means Frost Presence, Death and Decay and Rune Strike. Taunt abilities too (Death Grip and whatever that other one is), but they have long cooldowns so you don't want to throw them around willy-nilly.
As for gear, look for stamina, defense rating, dodge and parry. Resilience is better than nothing but it's not nearly as good as defense or parry. There's such a thing as a defense cap; if your warlock has ever raided you're probably familiar with the hit cap, and the defense cap is the same idea but even more important. A tank doesn't need as much hit rating or expertise as a dps needs, but you still need some.
Cyrus Jan 27th 2010 11:57AM
Heh, obviously I was the only person who thought Reuben was curious about tanking and asking for advice. Reviewing it, I guess everyone else's interpretation makes more sense. Never mind.
Mallistar Jan 27th 2010 11:44AM
With the incoming buff to Earth and Moon (Boomkins) - if the buff is knocked off my target by a pesky DK (Ebon Plague) will I lose the corresponding personal buff?
Phil Jan 27th 2010 11:46AM
Nah. The SP bonus is just a flat effect applied to you at all times regardless of whether the Earth and Moon proc is up.
RogueJedi86 Jan 27th 2010 11:46AM
"As for him being on the defensive most of the expansion, we can assume that's because he's had the problems at the Wrathgate"
To be fair, is there anyone that DIDN'T have problems at the Wrathgate or its aftermath? It seems like it knocked EVERYONE down a notch. Alliance and Horde kickstarted the war, Humans and Orcs lost valuable heroes, the Forsaken are On Notice, and as you put it the Scourge got dealt a big blow at Wrathgate too somehow(even though it was only the loss of a couple dozen of the hundreds of thousands of Scourge minions).
Avan Jan 27th 2010 11:55AM
Even the Tuskarr were affected by the events at the Wrathgate. After the plague was spread, the winds blew south and carried death into Mo'aki Harbor. A great many wolvar pups died that day... Beats getting eaten by walrusmen, I suppose.
Seriously, though? The dragon flights weren't affected by the Wrathgate, aside from maybe the reds who had to do clean-up duty.
macster Jan 27th 2010 11:57AM
The Red Dragonflight had a lovely barbecue?
ScorchHellfire Jan 27th 2010 12:10PM
It wasn't really a blow to the Scourge as a whole really... More like a personal blow to the Lich King as it showed that he is still mortal... Notice how he is actually quite effected by the Forsaken's plague and probably regrets not keeping Sylvannas under control or maybe wishes he left her plain dead...
Alanid Jan 27th 2010 12:36PM
@scroshhellfire He actually says that in the Hordes version of HoR to Sylvanas "I will not make the same mistake" etc
Vasco Jan 27th 2010 12:07PM
How long should I wait after logging out before I hit the Back and Quit buttons? I have a lot of addons and sometimes 3-4 minutes later the hard drive is still going nuts writing. I'm asking because, sometimes, if I'm in a hurry, it completely locks up if I don't wait long enough.
Samutz Jan 27th 2010 2:40PM
I always just hit the X or Alt+F4 for a quick log off. The game will still stay open for a few seconds while it does what it needs too. I've never lost any addon data doing that, that I know of. It's never 3-4 minutes though.
Nathanyel Jan 27th 2010 12:07PM
"You never know when you'll want to play with your wand..."
Like, ewww! Nerds...
Alar Jan 27th 2010 12:13PM
I'm sure this has been said already, but I don't really think you could call the Scourge 'terrorist', at least not with the modern sense of the word. If you use the dictionary term "a person who terrorizes or frightens others.", then yes, it totally works. The Lich King and the Scourge are scary mothers.
arcaneterror Jan 27th 2010 12:23PM
Or the Valley of Bones, also in Desolace. There are a pair of 100-foot-long naga/snakeman skeletons just lying there.
Bookmin Jan 27th 2010 12:22PM
Am I the only one wondering how those crafty night elves snuck a Moonwell into Free Realms?
