Trinkets: Hard to get, and Blizzard likes it that way

Any caster worth their salt can remember the frustration involved in trying to nab the elusive Illustration of the Dragon Soul trinket from Sartharion in the Obsidian Sanctum. We tried everything we could to get it, from creating our own melee-heavy raid groups, to participating only in "3D zerg" runs hoping that participants would be too over-geared to want it, to participating in Less Is More achievement runs just so there would be less competition for it.
Towards the end of the Patch 3.2 days, people would run OS25 once a week just to try and get that one trinket. Most weeks, it wouldn't even drop. When it did, you'd have to beat a good twelve or thirteen people in a roll for it.
The Illustration was so valuable (1) because it was a darn good trinket with gobs of spell power, and (2) it seemed impossible get it -- or any good trinket, for that matter. You can still head to Dalaran and buy trinkets with emblems, like the Talisman of Resurgence, but their use is painfully specialized and their value is often less than trinkets you can find in lower level heroics.
It turns out that good trinkets are hard to find for a reason: Blizzard like it that way. Bornakk at the official World of Warcraft forums wrote today:
That's not to say that Blizzard doesn't understand your pain. They are, at least it seems, aware of the frustration involved in finding that good trinket sometimes and might change things in the future:"Trinkets are really the one item (weapons are to a lesser extent) that we use to try and capture that old slot machine feel from the classic Molten Core days. Yes, completely random loot with huge loot tables can be frustrating but we are pretty far from being completely random these days. Trinkets however are still somewhat random, they can be hard to acquire, and there is often a lot of competition for them."
Sounds like something to look forward to in Cataclysm. In the meantime, though, we might all wind up spending the waning days of Wrath of the Lich King running 25-man Icecrown Citadel with superhuman obsession trying to get that elusive Althor's Abacus, Dislodged Foreign Object, or Deathbringer's Will to drop."We also probably just need to drop more of them. That doesn't mean they should be trivial to acquire, but when say a caster only has 2 good options in Ulduar and 1 requires a hard mode, then there is going to be ton of competition when they do drop. We know it's rough when the trinket you have been wanting finally drops and you have to roll against 10 other people for it. Having more trinkets would mean more variety, which means players may want different ones and ultimately will be a little more different from their friends/guildmates."

You've obviously given this a lot of thought. Sometimes I dream up raid leader conspiracy theories, and then dismiss it as irrational fear. Thanks a lot =)

I'm still running around with Darkmoon Card: Greatness (Strength version, obviously). Of course, considering that it was one of the BiS Death Knight trinkets until around patch 3.2 helps. Even now it's probably still in the top 10.

Oh thank goodness i'm not the only one who sometimes tries to arrange raids so that there will be less competition on gear i want.
W from [pwnspriest]: Hey, i have 6KDPS, i am familiar, I can stay all night, and I won't need on anything but [the item i want].
W to [pwnspriest]: Um, we're full....sorry.
W from [pwnspriest]: but why are you LFM then still?
W to [pwnspriest]: You're um, breaking up...
W from [supernoob]: Hey i hav no clu what to do and i will roll on tank gear even tho im DPS. Btw, what does ICC stand for?
W to [supernoob]: You're in!

I still have my iLevel 200 trinkets somehow...
bob Jan 29th 2010 4:36PM
This is the only thing keeping my healer from getting the achievement.
Beruza Jan 29th 2010 4:44PM
The only reason my hunter got the epic achievement is from PvP trinkets.
I too still have iLevel 200 trinkets.... :(
Boom Jan 29th 2010 4:49PM
If all you want is the achievement and all that's missing is the trinket slots:
1. Acquire enough emblems for the trinket of choice.
2. Purchase trinket.
3. Equip said trinket in upper slot.
4. Move said trinket to lower slot.
5. Revel in your achievement while you trade trinket back to vendor for your emblems.

"Equipping this item will make it non-refundable." :(
(But otherwise, yeah, you don't have to have them all on at the same time...)

If you look a the current (and past) badge caster gear it's pretty heavy on +hit. If you're a shadow priest who wants to try out holy, you can do it in your current gear and a respec, and the itemization spent on +hit won't kill you (you'll just be less effective). You will get a good feel for how holy works though.
If you're a holy priest who wants to try out shadow though, not having any +hit on your gear means you won't be applying your spells correctly (casting twice or more sometimes) and you won't really get a feel for it. Being able to pick up the extra hit is really necessary. The other part of that is that being able to grab a few pieces of +hit will make questing and grinding much easier even if you don't respec out of healing.

however don't try to dps/heal at the same time as shadow. got a priest like that today and had to quit after the third wipe on the third pull because he wouldn't heal us

"The caster badge trinket is AWFUL. So awful that it's useless for everybody but a healer who wants to DPS in healing gear and needs a lot of hit in a hurry."
Exactly what I use it for!
Samuel Jan 29th 2010 4:22PM
Trinkets are easy. You can buy a 245 verion with badges. You can buy a 264 version with badges.
Weapons and shields are much, much worse.
Nazgûl Jan 29th 2010 4:25PM
Badge trinkets suck. Plain and simple.
Scott Jan 29th 2010 4:31PM
@Nazgul:
Right, because the Herkuml War Token is so not worth it for say, a mut rogue. *rolls eyes*
Kylenne Jan 29th 2010 4:35PM
@Scott: Did you somehow miss this entire discussion taking place in the context of caster trinkets? Roll any sort of caster and try to fill those two slots with something of actual use, then get back to us.
Tridus Jan 29th 2010 4:35PM
Yep, because if you're a caster who is already at the hit cap, there's nothing more appealing then a trinket with 128 hit on it!
The caster badge trinket is AWFUL. So awful that it's useless for everybody but a healer who wants to DPS in healing gear and needs a lot of hit in a hurry.
That's the problem people are talking about here. The tank trinket is alright, the healer trinket is alright. The caster trinket is outright useless for any serious DPS.

You didn't read the article, did you?
Nazgûl Jan 29th 2010 4:27PM
Fury of the Five Flights... for months you eluded me... but now I have outclassed you.
