Trinkets: Hard to get, and Blizzard likes it that way

Any caster worth their salt can remember the frustration involved in trying to nab the elusive Illustration of the Dragon Soul trinket from Sartharion in the Obsidian Sanctum. We tried everything we could to get it, from creating our own melee-heavy raid groups, to participating only in "3D zerg" runs hoping that participants would be too over-geared to want it, to participating in Less Is More achievement runs just so there would be less competition for it.
Towards the end of the Patch 3.2 days, people would run OS25 once a week just to try and get that one trinket. Most weeks, it wouldn't even drop. When it did, you'd have to beat a good twelve or thirteen people in a roll for it.
The Illustration was so valuable (1) because it was a darn good trinket with gobs of spell power, and (2) it seemed impossible get it -- or any good trinket, for that matter. You can still head to Dalaran and buy trinkets with emblems, like the Talisman of Resurgence, but their use is painfully specialized and their value is often less than trinkets you can find in lower level heroics.
It turns out that good trinkets are hard to find for a reason: Blizzard like it that way. Bornakk at the official World of Warcraft forums wrote today:
That's not to say that Blizzard doesn't understand your pain. They are, at least it seems, aware of the frustration involved in finding that good trinket sometimes and might change things in the future:"Trinkets are really the one item (weapons are to a lesser extent) that we use to try and capture that old slot machine feel from the classic Molten Core days. Yes, completely random loot with huge loot tables can be frustrating but we are pretty far from being completely random these days. Trinkets however are still somewhat random, they can be hard to acquire, and there is often a lot of competition for them."
Sounds like something to look forward to in Cataclysm. In the meantime, though, we might all wind up spending the waning days of Wrath of the Lich King running 25-man Icecrown Citadel with superhuman obsession trying to get that elusive Althor's Abacus, Dislodged Foreign Object, or Deathbringer's Will to drop."We also probably just need to drop more of them. That doesn't mean they should be trivial to acquire, but when say a caster only has 2 good options in Ulduar and 1 requires a hard mode, then there is going to be ton of competition when they do drop. We know it's rough when the trinket you have been wanting finally drops and you have to roll against 10 other people for it. Having more trinkets would mean more variety, which means players may want different ones and ultimately will be a little more different from their friends/guildmates."

Sigh trinkets don't remind in tbc I never got my dst on my hunter never and I don't remeber seeing it drop, I did get madness of the betrayer /flex

It's not just that they're hard to get in raids, they're hard to get throughout every level of the game. Leveling my first character I remember the pieces of gear I got excited about getting were: my first pair of shoulders ( who wouldn't want to have huge shoulders like in the ads?) my first helm, necks, rings, and finally, weeks later, trinkets. And unless you're into PvP at low levels or an Engineer, your first trinket will likely be something all the lines of Eranikus' thingy or the Heart of Noxxion, something that fills the slot but ultimately is useless. Trinkets really seemed like something for the elite.

As shadow, Im still currently using Talisman of Resurgence and Sundial of the Exiled, two trinkets I sorely need to replace (disc isnt much better; talisman and Egg of Mortal Essence). I've ran H PoS around 15 times, and I've seen the Nevermelting Ice Crystal drop once, lost to a mage. I've only done ToC 25 2 or 3 times, never saw Solace or Reign, Muradin's Spyglass dropped and I wasnt allowed to roll on it cause I won the cloth belt on Marrowgar (half the raid rolled on it anyway), and I also lost the roll on Sliver of Pure Ice. Trinkets suck.

In a ten man raiding guild. Pugged ToC25 every week nearly without fail. Collected the daggers, cloak, ring, neck, chest, belt, 4/5 25manT9. All i ever really wanted was good ole Death's Verdict. Saw it drop maybe 4 times. Lost every roll. ICC drops and I'm like, " Halle-f@%$in'-lujah! No more going to ToC25 for the trinket that won't drop, I can get the WFS off DW in 10manICC! WooHoo!!" Flash forward to now. We've been in ICC10 every week except for the first 2(Xmas break) Killed DW regularly and have yet to see the damn thing drop, not once. An officer organizes a semi-a=alliance with his old guildies to hit up ICC25 but first we hit Ony and ToC25 this week for a shakedown run. Guess what drops from the Valkyr? Guess who won it? RNG i hate you sometimes.

I really didn't understand the point of that post. Also I don't think random loot from bosses is fun and would rather calculate the exact day I get an upgrade and work towards it... but I guess I am in the minority.
dj Jan 29th 2010 5:34PM
hey think we'll ever get an heirloom deck? would be a neat idea.

I have been raiding and doing Heroics since the summer, and I still haven't gotten an upgrade for my Chuchu's Tiny Box of Horrors. I want that Needle-Encrusted Scorpion dammit!
Jaq Jan 29th 2010 6:23PM
I got the Needle Encrusted Scorpion on the first day of the patch. No one in my guild has seen it since. I sometimes wonder if it is real...
nieboh Jan 30th 2010 1:46AM
Good luck to you on that Scorpion. I got lucky and it didn't take very long for my rogue to get it (maybe 4 or 5 runs). It took a lot longer to get the unsharpened razor ice thing (although my mage saw it drop at least once a day the whole time I was trying). The one that nearly killed me though was the stupid melee cloak from regular FoS. I finally won it on my 49th kill (had seen it drop twice before that and lost the rolls).

.. and it bears a mention too that the current random LFG - which I love and use daily on multiple toons - is completely screwed up in terms of trinket loot rules.
Example: Forge Ember ( H HoS)- which for a new 80 is a damn decent trinket - cannot be Needed by a caster. It can only be Greeded (or Disenchanted).
I've almost never seen it drop, but a few weeks ago it dropped on melee-heavy runs with my mage and lock - and it got DE' both times.
Kiliani Jan 30th 2010 4:59AM
It's not just me! My mage hit 80 a couple of weeks ago, and is still using the two blue trinkets from Howling Fjord quests. I've seen the Pendulum of Telluric Currents (from the 3rd boss in Oculus) drop twice, and have not been able to hit the "need" button on it. Both times it was disenchanted. QQ :(
n3ther Jan 31st 2010 5:05AM
To save yourself a heartache, tell the group beforehand that you need the item but can't roll "need" on it. Hopefully they are a goodhearted and understanding.
nekorion Jan 29th 2010 6:49PM
I've never had a problem with trinkets.
NOW BOOTS?
different story all together. If the new instances didn't come out, I'd be walking around trying to afford 60 emblems worth of 213 gear boots, instead, I ran reg HoR for days to get a 213 one.
Screw boots. You can get crappy trinkets at least pretty easily, but finding boots above level 200 is a chore.
Aloix Jan 29th 2010 7:15PM
Crafted boots? Either the old i226 versions (which should be really/relatively cheap now) or the i264 ones which are quite pricey. Statwise may not be ideal but they do have 2 sockets.
If you don't have access to gear from raids, it may be worth it.
The Silent Dawn Jan 29th 2010 6:58PM
Not only do you have to roll against all the other specs that actually do need the item, if you are in a random, you have the people that "just like the name"
Blood DK, lost [Needle-Encrusted Scorpion] to a ret pally. >.
jayz Jan 29th 2010 7:48PM
I feel your pain ... I saw it drop for the first time a few days ago and lost it to a tree who "needed" it for his offspec.
\sigh
Rubitard Jan 29th 2010 7:06PM
Okay, say they start dropping different trinkets for casters, or melee, or what have you. Elitist Jerks will post the "best and only" trinket to have out of a selection, thereby negating the point of having more variety. There is always a perception amongst gamers that there's still one and only one that's the best. They all get together online and theorycraft it out, post it, and then that's the one everybody wants. The rest becomes vendor trash.
jmsalsa Jan 29th 2010 8:14PM
and i'm SICK of tanks rolling "off-spec" on dps trinkets.
you wanna roll.....sit in the que like the rest of us.
main spec > off spec.
Zanathos Jan 30th 2010 3:20AM
Not everyone feels the same way, the best you can do is ask when the group forms who's rolling for it and hope they're honest.
Beelzebud Jan 29th 2010 7:51PM
I never thought I'd be happy to get a Dislodged Foreign Object, but I was totally thrilled when I got one the other night. :D
