The WoW Player's Guide to Star Trek Online

Our sister site Massively has been producing some great content the last few months on Cryptic Studios' latest MMORPG - Star Trek Online. The game puts the player 30 years after the events in Star Trek: Nemesis, pitting Federation against the Klingons, and everyone against the Borg. The universe is on the brink of a massive war, and your job is to trek amongst the stars carrying out missions and battling the enemy at ever turn.
The SciFi MMO is a great opportunity for players who are burnt out on WoW or are looking for a distraction from the daily/weekly WoW grind. In order to help all of you WoW player's out there, we've penned The WoW Player's Guide to Star Trek Online, which gives you the basic concepts of the game as they related to WoW.
There's also a ton of other content over at Massively about the game. All of which is listed in Massively's Star Trek Online page.
But for those of you looking to jump right in and (if I may be so corney) set your phasers to fun, head over there and read the WoW Player's Guide. You and your tribble shan't be disappointed.

I tried to find the "fun" setting on my Phaser, but mine was stuck on "zzzzz" when I tried it.

It has WoW in the topic and talks about WoW concepts... Seems relevant to me. L2Read

I got my Beta Key from Curse.
I won't be using it, it's a PC only game and doesn't run under Parallels.
zcubed Feb 2nd 2010 10:31AM
hate to break it to you but your mac has pc internals, install windows.
zcubed Feb 2nd 2010 10:37AM
i'm not trying to hate on OS X or anything. its a great OS. Mac owners just need to understand they own PCs too.

The beta is over. It was over days ago.

I'm a huge trekkie and have been playing WoW for 4 years... I spent a weekend in the Beta of STO and was really let down. Looks like I'm going to just stick to the planet Azeroth until something better comes along.

I'm in the same boat as you. I was super excited at the prospect of a Star Trek MMO, but the quality of the game as well as some of Cryptic's company polices (especially on pricing) have made me say no to this game.
supersaint Feb 2nd 2010 11:09AM
Also a huge Trekkie, I stayed away from the Beta though, I don't wan't to see the warts, I'll go purchase the game today, and see it with all the gameday glitter and shine they can put on it, STO is the only game that can take me away from WoW for periods of time.

The few of you trolling here have had your comments removed. If you continue to ask to be downrated, stir up trouble, etc... I'll just ban you. You've been warned.
Dawts Feb 2nd 2010 11:24AM
Well I apologize if my comment came off as purely a troll post as it wasn't my intention, but I do stand by my opinion. That being said I'll try and keep further comments more positive.

*sigh* I figured that would happen. Play nice everyone! >=\ Fear the holy power of the banhammer, ye mortal trolls!
As for this: "...set your phasers to fun..." I believe it needs one of these:

So don't read the article? It takes less than a second to scroll past it. I bet there are some WoW players here who will enjoy it.
Seriously, I don't understand some people. Is the slightest mention of another video game such an offense to your senses?

Yeah, I'm also in the disappointed by STO camp - only 3 character slots? And just felt no immersion, not even a "I've got what you need"-type voice emote from NPCs - the missions all feel the same and there's a LOT less of a 'oh,wow' that you get on going to a new zone in WOW. Makes me appreciate 'old faithful' all the more.
Bronwyn Feb 2nd 2010 11:37AM
I play without sound so I haven't noticed the lack of emotes and such but I have to say the immersion thing bothered me a LOT more than I thought it would. Aside from finding the flight mechanic kind of annoying (I'm sure with more practice I'll get used to it), I really felt like the heavy instancing and less clear delineation between enemies/allies (Obviously you can tell, it's just more work than it is in WoW) to bother me, which is actually surprising because when I was told about these things without experiencing them, I was not really concerned.
That said, my fiance is SUPER into the game so I'll probably give it a few more chances, level up a bit, and see if I like it. But it isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea.
Oh, and this is probably a silly complaint but in character creation I can't help but feel I'm a little out of my depth- I'm *not* a Trekkie in the least, but I do enjoy the franchise- I just haven't seen every episode, know very little of the lore, etc. There's so much I can customize that I feel kind of overwhelmed, and guilty that I don't know what sort of alien I'm creating, etc. Also, WTB skirt-type uniform for my lady officers please.
Hoggersbud Feb 2nd 2010 10:04AM
Well, I sort of like Star Trek, but it's more in bits and pieces than the overall fandom that makes somebody a Trekkie. Add to that the inevitable growing pains of a new MMO, and I'm just not inclined to give it a try yet.
To be honest, I'm not even sure I like most of the Trek universe as a game. I think that further back in time, such as around the time of say the Eugenics Wars would be more interesting. Or if they used the Trek universe from Star Fleet Battles.
Of course, I'd probably just prefer the Traveller or Serenity universes for an MMO, or even Exo-squad. Or Third-Generation Robotech.
Oooh, or the Spiral Zone. Or Sliders. Imagine that as an MMO. You could even have competing "realities" fighting for dominance.
Maybe if somebody buys me a copy I'll give it an install, but if I have problems with that (thank you LOTRO), then I'll probably not continue. It just doesn't seem interesting to me.

"set your phasers to fun"
After an hour of laughing my ass off at this, I decided to comment on your post. All I have to say is you've made my day, I love a good ol' play on words =D
Morcego Feb 2nd 2010 10:23AM
I was on the STO beta too. I was really amazed by the staggering amount of bugs still left when they decided to finish the beta. Ranging from annoying to show stoppers, my experience on beta guaranteed I won't be buying that game anytime soon, if ever.
For anyone interested in STO, I recommend waiting at least a couple months before turning in your money. Before that, you will be only paying to find bugs and, as far as I'm concerned, it should be the other way around.
Candina@WH Feb 2nd 2010 10:25AM
No Mac Version, doesn't run under Parallels, no longer interested.
- I am an X-PC. I chose Mac two months ago, haven't looked back. Don't hate.
zcubed Feb 2nd 2010 10:34AM
you mean your and x-windows user. macs have pc internals. you just enjoy OS X more, which is fine.
