Raimi tackling another movie before Warcraft

The Spiderman fiasco drew rumors that Warcraft was coming that much sooner, since Raimi was now free to work on it. However, news appeared yesterday that his next project is The Shadow, so it looks like we're going to have to be patient a little longer. But hey, we're Blizzard fans, right? We can be patient.
And honestly, I'm still not convinced that a live-action Warcraft movie is a good idea. I mean, I like a lot of Raimi's work, and Legendary Pictures has made some great films, but... I dunno. We'll see.

Why am I not surprised?

Maybe I'm dating myself here, but... who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?

News Flash: Production on a movie based on video game gets delayed. Full story at 11.

I agree. I don't think a "live action" movie would do so hot.
I think a CGI version would fair better- at a minimum the same quality as the game cinematics. At best, something along the lines of Beowulf (or better, as I'm sure the technology by then will be).

I would think along the lines of Avatar - live action actors, but with 'digital make-up'.

Even if they did it like LOTR it would be fine. The problem is, there's no way it's going to have the same budget.

The thing is, it takes a along time and a lot of money to make those intro movies, even with them as short as they are. The attention to detail is staggering! And remember Avatar took 12 years to make... and it had an absolutely huge budget. Beowulf was good but it felt weird watching it. Let them take their time, after all as the column suggests we're used to waiting for things ;)

Definitely agreeing with this.

The only reason Avatar took 12 years to make and so much money is James Cameron INVENTED all the technology he used to make it. Now they can use the gear he made to make these types of movies for a good bit cheaper.

I have yet to hear anyone claim that live-action is a better idea. -_- I'm no different. I really don't see why they're still going with live-action, unless they're using tech like Avatar and considering it live-action. I doubt it though, especially since that is very new, top of the line technology.
On that note, the technology used for Avatar would fit perfectly for this kind of production, imo.
I really wish Blizz would use a lot of their own people though. Just from watching their most recent cinematics they have great cinematography, etc. and then, hopefully, we wouldn't have any stupid, unnecessary changes to the world/lore/characters. Of course they need a company for equipment, distribution, etc. since it's not full CGI. I don't know. I'm just really worried about this whole thing. It could be one of the greatest films of all time, if done completely right, or it could be a total, abhorrent disaster.

Alanid, you thought Avatar was short? I loved the movie, but short, it was not.

Finally, someone besides me that thinks the WC live action movie idea is bleh. I'm with you Eliah, I don't think it's going to be that great. I also don't care for the incredibly cheezy sappy moments that Sam Raimi has been putting in films lately. I can just see Jaina and Thrall now at the coffee shop:
Jaina: Kiss me...
Thrall: Kiss you?
Jaina: I need to know something. Just one kiss.
/gagreflex
Dialogue like that has no place in modern society.
zcubed Feb 3rd 2010 3:18PM
ahahahaha, great stuff. i agree.
Boven Feb 3rd 2010 3:27PM
She'll probably cry after the kiss, too.
I do agree, though, that a live action Warcraft movie never struck me as a great idea. For starters, it'd almost certainly exclude most of the Horde races.
I think cgi or animation would make more sense, but even then I have to wonder if it'd just end up being something cheesy.
Tomatketchup Feb 3rd 2010 3:31PM
@Boven: Doesn't matter what producer makes the Warcraft 3 movie, Jaina will cry in any case AND IT'S ANNOYING AS DUCK I'M GETTING SO PIS-
...sorry, I am still somewhat annoyed after hearing her clips in ICC.
*dingles with bell* I am a kitty, I am a kitty...

Honestly, I find Warcraft to be pretty cheesy as is. There’s nothing really subtle about this setting and most of the dialogue seems to consist of people yelling proclamations and gasping at one another. I mean, it works for a video game setting, where information needs to be delivered unambiguously and much of the story is left to the player, but when translated into other mediums such as comics and novella, the characters become somewhat two-dimensional and often overt to a fault.
Overall, whoever translates WoW to change some things around. Thrall, Jaina, and even Illidan are not going to hold up too well once themselves alone that are carrying the narrative forward.

OMG YES! Spiderman 3 sucked so badly. Waaay too emotional. And I'm a girl. And one of my favorite movies is "Gone with the Wind." That whole scene at the end where everyone is crying KILLED me. I mean wtf. It is a superhero movie. I have concerns.

The final word imho.

"Live action" doesn't mean "no CGI".
Also, Spiderman 3 had a bad screenplay. Even Raimi didn't like the screenplay, apparently. Given that Metzen is making the story for the film, and the screenwriter is Robert Rodat there is a good chance it will be a better screenplay than Spiderman 3. :)

Screenplay written by a reindeer! Now that's something I'd like to see!!!
