How to tell if a GM is whispering you

Let's dissect the above whisper:
- It's one whisper made to look like two. This will work if your chat settings match the scammer's chat settings, but if you've fiddled with your font or chat window, then the formatting will be off and the scam will be more obvious.
- The whisper is from a garbage name. All "players" I've seen with random characters have been scammers or gold selling barkers. So anything after such a name should be considered highly suspect.
- It says [Game Master]GM. The scammers aren't even trying here. Blizzard GMs have names and have <GM> before their names.
- It sends you to a non-Blizzard site. Don't go to any website you get in tells or in-game mail as a general rule. If you have received a ban of any kind, you will receive an email to the account you have on file with your subscription info.
Now, this is what it looks like when a GM is actually whispering you [Edited to reflect current GM chat.]:
Notice the differences:
- The GM has an intelligible name. It's an actual name, not random letters and not just GM or Game Master.
- The syntax is BLIZZ[Name]. There is now a BLIZZ logo next to the GM's name, which is in brackets.
- There's no whisper from a stranger right above it. The scammer could use someone's stolen account, so an incomprehensible name is not a guaranteed method of identifying a perp.
- GM chat pops up in its own window. This is important because there has been at least one case where a GM accidentally left a BLIZZ logo on a non-GM player. This allowed the player to chat with a logo next to his character's name for a while.
Reminder: If you get an email from Blizzard, please make sure it is really from Blizzard before you click on anything in it. The best way to do this is to call their support line (link goes to Blizzard's global support listings). If there is anything up with your account, they will confirm it. If not, they will direct you in how to report the email you received.
Of course, if no one bought gold, it would not be profitable for scammers to spend the time sending you in-game messages and out-of-game emails. And with how easy it is to make money in Azeroth these days, I really don't understand why anyone would support hackers in this way. But people are still buying gold and therefore, the rest of us must be constantly vigilant against account thieves.

I had this happen to me earlier today. Didn't fall for it at all, as I've talked to actual GMs before, and the above mentioned differences are pretty obvious to anyone who has also talked to a real GM.

Another very obvious hint at it being fake is...you're online when they tell you you're suspended. If you were really suspended why are you still playing?
Saidear Feb 4th 2010 8:08PM
Also. Blizz whispers now have the Blizzard logo. And I think, but not certain you're prompted to accept the chat invite (which opens in a seperate window maybe) before they talk. But that might be my memory playing tricks on me.
Kevin Miller Feb 4th 2010 8:29PM
Yeah, now not only do you get prompted, but it now opens its own chatwindow all together.
Derrek Feb 4th 2010 9:42PM
Two or three things happen when a GM wants to talk to you, as mentioned above.
1, you are prompted with an on-screen visual cue that informs you of a chat request from the GM. I forget the exact wording of the message, but I'm fairly certain there's small popup window that appears and informs that "A GM would like to talk to you", or somesuch. Also, if you have an open ticket, the small tooltip that says "You have an open ticket." next to the minimap will glow a cheerful golden color. You can click on it to accept the chat request.
2, upon accepting a chat request from a GM, a second chat window will open. If your chat box is in the default position, the GM chat box will appear right above it.
It's also important to note that Blizzard employees will ALWAYS have the happy blue BLIZZ graphic before their name. As stated above, some player may have accidentally gotten one, but a genuine GM will always have one. If there's not a happy blue BLIZZ icon, it's not a GM.
Let me also add that Blizzard has the best tech support in the world. They're very courteous, friendly, and professional. I've never had I conversation with a GM that I didn't like.

I'm on a RPPVP server, so GMs always talk in role when they whisper you. They're the ONLY people who role play on the server, lol.

The promt box won't show up if a GM whispers you without an open ticket but it still does have its own chatbox.

Buying gold is so 2006-08...
Even my laziest of friends make enough gold to stay happy & repaired in WotLK.

I'd think the scammers are desperate because it's so much easier to make gold now. They need business more than ever, so they've doubled (or tripled) their scamming efforts to make up for the lack of business.
I hope they all die. It's such a sleazy business.
Sky Feb 4th 2010 11:56PM
does your lazy friends get 264 BoE epics too? Thought so...
Neirin Feb 5th 2010 2:43PM
It's easy to make gold nowadays, but there are also some exorbitantly expensive items out there. 10k for a battered hilt still isn't too uncommon, and 1.5-2k for Primordial Saronite is an accepted cost - for items that require 5 Saronite, you're pushing 10k unless you want to spend your hard earned badges. These items are also all about instant gratification (get a serviceable piece of gear until one drops in ICC, or just get an instant upgrade), so people are more likely to just buy some instant cash.

I thought GM whispers have a BLIZZ logo next to their names now.

" A Game Master's whisper will always begin with {blizzlogo}followed by their name and so can easily be distinguished from a player’s whisper."

Will fix!

i have my chat setting to show the name of the player with the color of their class ( paladin =pink, rogue=yellow)
sick and tired of scammers taking advantage of new players or not so new ones
i personally dont go to any website that i get whispers from, and never got hacked before, thanks for posting this
Snuzzle Feb 4th 2010 11:40PM
The best thing about that mod?
Most GMs have a class too, you know ;)
Zalvi24 Feb 5th 2010 10:31AM
ok
1. its not a mod, is on the chat settings ingame
2. no they dont if you look at the pic above they just have blizz logo before their name
Magi58 Feb 8th 2010 2:28PM
I use an addon called WIM
It has a setting where you can filter out everyone that is lvl 1 or 2 (Your choice)
It is very nice and I personally have not had a single scammer message me ever since I installed it. It helps a bunch in trade with them scamming their gold websites too.
Fallacy Feb 4th 2010 8:18PM
I recently talked to a GM over a bugged quest and, in addition to the Blizz logo, the GM chat popped into it own chat window.
Constant Vigilance, people. It's not just for trigger-happy DPSers.
jfofla Feb 4th 2010 8:19PM
I would never fall for something like this...
OH did I tell you guys an African Prince is sending me 10 Million to deposit for him?
Bvannas Feb 4th 2010 9:27PM
Thats so obviously a Scam, not even worth my time, especially as I have to go pick up my Nigerian Lottery Winnings soon.
